Google Nest Hub Max is a smart display: a touchscreen with Google Assistant, media and photo features, smart-home controls, video calling and a built-in camera. It is more than a smart speaker or security camera—the screen is central to how it shows photos, videos, visual answers and household controls.
What does Google Nest Hub Max do?
Google describes Nest Hub Max as a device for family communication, home monitoring, smart-home control, entertainment and everyday assistance. You can use it for video calls, view Google Photos, check a built-in Nest Cam live view and motion alerts, and control compatible smart-home devices. It can also play YouTube and content from cast-enabled apps, and show personalized calendar or task information. Google’s product overview presents those uses, though service availability can vary.

Google says personalized results for up to six users require enrollment and setup. YouTube TV and music services require subscriptions; the display itself does not make those services free.
What are its screen, camera and hardware specifications?
Google lists a 10-inch HD touchscreen with a resolution of 1280 × 800 pixels. The device weighs 1.32 kg and measures 101.23 mm deep, 250.1 mm wide and 182.55 mm high. Its 1.5 m power cable connects to a 30 W adapter. It has no battery, so it must remain plugged into an outlet. Google’s specifications page lists Chalk and Charcoal colors, with availability depending on market.
The camera is 6.5 megapixels, has a 127-degree field of view and supports auto-framing. Audio hardware includes two 18 mm, 10 W tweeters and one 75 mm, 30 W subwoofer, along with two far-field microphones. Other listed hardware includes Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, Bluetooth 5.0, 802.15.4 wireless connectivity at 2.4 GHz, ultrasound sensing, Voice Match, an Ambient EQ light sensor and capacitive touch controls.
How does the camera work, and what can you control?
The camera serves different functions depending on the feature in use. It supports video calls and the built-in Nest Cam live view. Camera sensing enables features including Face Match, Quick Gestures and Look and Talk. The device has a physical camera and microphone on/off switch; Google says switching the camera off also disables camera-based sensing and the built-in Nest Cam.

Google distinguishes camera sensing from streaming. Its camera-sensing explanation says images used for sensing are analyzed on the device rather than sent to Google. By contrast, the camera streams when you are on a video call or using the built-in Nest Cam. Google’s camera-state documentation describes sensing as frames being captured and analyzed, and says an LED indicates camera state. The distinction is between local sensing and active video streaming—not between a camera that is always off and one that is always transmitting.
Look and Talk is available only on Nest Hub Max in English, according to Google. It requires camera sensing, Voice Match and Face Match. Google says the feature’s video processing happens on-device and that Look and Talk can be turned off. Its Look and Talk help page explains the requirements.

- Some entertainment services cost extra. YouTube TV and music services require subscriptions.
- Compatibility matters. Smart-home control applies to compatible devices; check the specific device and service support for your market.
