Gears of War: E-Day is a mainline origin story set fourteen years before the original Gears of War. What does E-Day mean?
“E-Day” is short for Emergence Day: the day the Locust Horde first erupts from beneath Sera and begins its assault on humanity. The invasion catches people by surprise, and the game focuses on the first days of the catastrophe, when the Locust are still mysterious and unfamiliar to the characters.

The story takes place fourteen years before the original Gears of War, according to Xbox. That makes it an earlier chapter in the franchise chronology, not a continuation set after the events of Gears 5.

The earlier setting lets the game show the invasion at its beginning and the people who will become central to the series before the familiar events of the original game. In a 2024 interview, The Coalition called it an origin story that adds context to later stories. Xbox Wire’s interview with the developers also makes clear that choosing an earlier period does not mean abandoning the storylines of Gears 4 and Gears 5.
Which characters are in E-Day?
Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago
The central characters are younger Marcus Fenix and Dominic “Dom” Santiago. They are soldiers caught in the invasion’s opening days, and the story explores the beginnings of the bond that becomes important throughout the franchise.

Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes
The announced squad is not limited to Marcus and Dom. A 2026 Xbox Wire interview identifies Mags Carter, a former Gear working at Kalona’s Imulsion Refinery, and Lucas Reyes, a young cadet serving as a communications officer. Is E-Day a spin-off or a mainline Gears game?
Gears of War: E-Day is a mainline series entry set earlier in the timeline. The Coalition has described it as an origin story rather than a spin-off: it revisits the franchise’s defining disaster and gives more context to the stories that follow. Its prequel setting does not, by itself, indicate that the later storyline has been dropped.
