Game server hosting is the operation of multiplayer game-server software on networked computing resources so players can join the same session. In an authoritative client-server design, the server holds the true game state, processes player actions and sends synchronized state information to connected clients. Each player’s game client mainly sends input and displays the server-approved result.
Godlike.Host hosts servers for Minecraft and more than 40 other games, with free DDoS protection and 24/7 support.
Hosting may mean running your own dedicated machine, using a player-hosted listen server, or using a managed service that provisions servers, places sessions, scales capacity and monitors fleets. The right choice depends on who your players are, how competitive the game is, expected session size, geographic distribution and how much backend infrastructure your team wants to operate.

A multiplayer session needs one authority that decides what happened. The server receives actions such as movement, firing or item use, applies the game’s rules, updates the shared world and distributes the resulting state to clients. Unreal Engine describes this arrangement as client-server networking: the server maintains the authoritative state while clients connect remotely and receive information about that state.
“The true game state is moderated by the server, this is referred to as the server being the authoritative host.” — Epic Games Unreal Engine documentation

This authority is why a player cannot simply decide, on their own computer, that a hit landed or that an item was acquired. The client requests an action; the server validates it against the game rules and shares the accepted result. Not every multiplayer title uses the same networking architecture, but authoritative hosting is the model described by the cited Unreal Engine documentation.
How a hosted game session works
A managed session normally passes through several services rather than connecting a game client directly to a server fleet. The names of components differ by provider, but the responsibilities are consistent.
- The client requests a session. The game client contacts a backend service. AWS recommends a coordination layer so clients do not need direct access to sensitive cloud credentials or permissions.
- The backend finds or starts a game server. The backend communicates with the hosting service, and a placement system starts a new session or matches players to an existing one.
- Connection information is returned. Once a server is selected, the client receives the information required to connect to that session.
- The server runs the match. The custom game-server process manages the authoritative state, processes player actions, synchronizes gameplay and reports readiness or health to the hosting service.
- Fleet systems manage capacity. Hosting systems provide server resources in configured locations, track health and capacity, and add or remove resources according to the service’s operating model.
A managed platform can supply infrastructure and hosting functions, but it does not create your game’s rules. AWS describes the game server as custom software; the developer still builds the backend and integrates hosting calls into the client.
Dedicated server versus listen server
The two fundamental arrangements differ in where the authoritative process runs and whether the host is also a player.
| Arrangement | What runs where | Practical implications |
|---|---|---|
| Listen server | One player’s game client hosts the session while that player participates. | Suitable for some casual cooperative games. The host is part of the authoritative instance, which can give that player a connection or gameplay advantage; the session also depends on the host player’s machine and connection. |
| Dedicated server | A separate, headless server process runs the session; every player connects remotely. | No participant plays directly on the server instance. The process can concentrate on game logic and controlling information sent to clients. Epic describes dedicated servers as suited to large-scale or competitive games. |
These are architectural categories, not guarantees of quality. A small cooperative title may work well with a listen server, while a competitive game generally benefits from a dedicated authority that is not controlled by one participant.

What “hosting” can include
At the simplest level, hosting is a computer, operating system, network connection and game-server binary that stay available for players. The team is responsible for patching the machine, starting processes, exposing connection endpoints, observing health and replacing failed capacity.
Managed hosting adds an orchestration layer. AWS’s GameLift Servers documentation describes infrastructure provisioning, session management, placement, geographic fleets and hosting-capacity management. Microsoft describes PlayFab Multiplayer Servers as a service for custom game servers that can scale dynamically on Azure compute and run Windows or Linux builds.
The boundary is important: “managed” does not mean “no backend.” Your service still needs account, matchmaking or party logic as appropriate for the game, and it must ask the hosting platform to place players into a session. The platform can operate fleets and server lifecycle while your code remains responsible for game behavior and the integration between client, backend and host.
Dedicated hosting workflow for a development team
The following sequence turns a multiplayer build into a service players can use. Exact APIs and console labels vary, so treat it as an architecture checklist rather than a provider-specific tutorial.
- Build a server target. Produce the game’s server executable or build that can run without rendering a playable local view. A dedicated process should load the game rules, accept connections and report its status.
- Define the session contract. Decide what your backend must know: player or party identity, game mode, map, maximum players, region preference and whether a match is ready to accept connections.
- Add a protected coordination backend. Have the client call your backend, not cloud management APIs directly. The backend authenticates the request, asks the hosting service for placement and returns only the session connection information the client needs.
- Choose locations. Configure server locations near the populations you intend to serve. Physical distance and the player’s own internet connection affect experienced latency, so region selection should follow your actual player distribution.
- Connect placement to the game flow. When enough players are assembled, the backend requests a new server or assigns an existing one. The client waits for the placement result and then connects to the selected process.
- Instrument readiness and health. The server should tell the hosting system when it is ready, when players have joined and when the match has ended or failed. Fleet management depends on these signals to avoid sending players to unusable processes.
- Plan demand before launch. Estimate concurrent sessions, players per session and peak periods. Decide which capacity is always available and which can be added dynamically, then test the behavior when demand falls as well as when it spikes.
- Automate the repeatable work. Version the server build, configuration and deployment process so a new patch can be rolled out consistently and a failed host can be replaced without manual intervention.
Latency, regions and the player experience
Latency is not a single property of a hosting brand. AWS states that experienced latency depends on both the player’s internet connection and physical distance to the game server. A player in one continent connecting to a fleet on another will generally have a longer network path than a player near that fleet, even if both have fast local internet.

For a geographically distributed audience, compare the locations a service can operate and how your placement logic selects among them. Regional fleets can keep sessions close to players, but they also introduce operational decisions: whether to keep capacity in several places, how to handle a region that is full, and whether a party should stay together when members are far apart. Measure the locations your audience actually uses instead of assuming one central region is optimal.
Capacity and bandwidth planning
Capacity means more than the number of virtual machines. You need enough server processes for concurrent sessions, enough compute and memory for each process, and enough network throughput for the state updates your game sends.
AWS notes that bandwidth varies with the title, game mode, tick rate, replication model, player behavior, geography and launch traffic. Two games with the same player count can therefore have very different requirements. A high tick rate or frequent replication of a large world can increase traffic; a quieter mode with fewer updates may use less.
One AWS pricing example uses a competitive 5v5 shooter workload with 10 players per session, 20 KB/s of bandwidth per player, a 64 tick rate and 50,000 peak concurrent users. Those are inputs to AWS’s illustrative cost scenario—not an industry benchmark and not a requirement for every shooter. The figures appear on the Amazon GameLift pricing page, whose year is not stated on the cited page.

Model at least three demand levels:
- Baseline: the capacity needed during ordinary hours.
- Peak: simultaneous players during launches, updates, events or weekends.
- Failure or burst: spare capacity and scaling time when hosts fail or demand rises faster than expected.
Use measurements from your server build for CPU, memory, network output and session duration. Do not substitute the illustrative AWS inputs for measurements from your own game.

How hosting costs are calculated
There is no single industry price for game-server hosting. Costs depend on the resources consumed, how long sessions run, the number and location of servers, traffic and the provider’s billing rules.
On its instance-pricing page, AWS says listed Linux and Windows rates are hourly while billing is calculated to the second, with a one-minute minimum charge per instance. Those are AWS terms and can change; they should not be generalized to another vendor. AWS also describes eligibility limits for its free-bandwidth policy, so verify the current conditions before using free allowances in a forecast: AWS GameLift Servers instance pricing.
A useful estimate separates:
- server compute time for active and idle capacity;
- network egress and any game-specific bandwidth charges;
- backend, database, authentication and matchmaking components;
- storage, logging, monitoring and build distribution; and
- cross-region or other infrastructure charges described in the provider’s current terms.
Calculate cost per concurrent player and per completed session only after you know the session length, player count and traffic pattern. A short, busy session and a long, lightly populated session consume resources differently.

Self-managed dedicated infrastructure
Running the server fleet yourself provides control over the operating environment, deployment process and network design. It also leaves your team responsible for capacity planning, patching, monitoring, failover, regional expansion and the backend-to-server placement workflow. This approach can make sense when you already operate infrastructure and need a specialized configuration that a managed service does not provide.
Managed game-server hosting
A managed service can handle provisioning, fleet lifecycle, placement and scaling primitives so the game team can focus on server code and player-facing features. It is especially useful when demand changes sharply or when you need servers in multiple locations without building every fleet-management component yourself. You still need to evaluate current regional availability, pricing, supported operating systems and the integration work required by the service.
Best Value
Listen servers for small cooperative play
A listen server avoids a separate host for each match and can be economical for casual sessions. Its trade-offs are tied to the hosting player’s machine, connection and continued participation. If that player leaves or has poor connectivity, the session may be interrupted or handed to another host, depending on the game’s design.
Managed-service examples
These services illustrate different ways a provider can package hosting. Their names and capabilities are current documentation examples, not a universal recommendation; verify availability and terms before committing.
| Service | Documented role | Platform details |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon GameLift Servers | Infrastructure provisioning, scaling, session management and placement, geographic hosting fleets and capacity management for session-based multiplayer games. | AWS-managed hosting components integrated with a developer’s custom game server and backend. |
| PlayFab Multiplayer Servers | Game hosting for custom servers with dynamic scaling. | Runs on Azure compute and supports Windows or Linux builds. |
Read the provider documentation linked above for the current service boundaries. A platform may operate the fleet while your team still owns the authoritative server binary, game rules, player identity and the client integration.
Common failure modes and practical fixes
Players connect to a distant region
Symptom: players report consistently high latency despite healthy servers. Check: the placement decision and the physical locations of the players and fleet. Fix: add or enable a closer region where demand justifies it, or adjust placement so a party is not assigned farther away than necessary.
Servers exist but sessions cannot start
Symptom: the backend requests placement, but clients never receive usable connection information. Check: the handoff between backend, placement service and server readiness signal. Fix: make readiness and failure states explicit, log each transition and return a recoverable error so the backend can retry or select another host.

Symptom: a traffic spike creates more running capacity and network use than forecast. Check: peak concurrent players, session duration, tick rate, replication volume and idle capacity. Fix: test scaling before launch, set capacity policies around measured demand and review which servers can be stopped safely when sessions end.
A listen host gives one player an advantage
Symptom: the hosting player has a more responsive connection or influence over the session. Fix: use a dedicated server for modes where fairness matters, or clearly limit listen hosting to cooperative play where that trade-off is acceptable.
A decision checklist
- Are matches casual and cooperative, or competitive and sensitive to host advantage?
- How many players share one session, and how long does a typical session last?
- Where are players located, and which server regions can keep latency reasonable?
- Can your team operate fleet capacity, health checks, deployments and failover itself?
- Does demand arrive in predictable hours or in sharp launch and event spikes?
- What do your measured tick rate, replication model and player behavior imply for bandwidth?
- Does the provider’s current billing model fit active, idle and burst capacity?
- Which parts remain your responsibility: server code, backend coordination, authentication, matchmaking and client integration?
Game server hosting is therefore both a networking arrangement and an operations decision. The authoritative server protects the consistency of a shared session; the hosting layer determines where that server runs, how it is reached and how capacity changes as players arrive and leave. Choose the simplest arrangement that meets your game’s fairness, latency, scale and reliability requirements, then validate the choice with measurements from your own server build.
