Front screen projection—usually called front projection—means the projector and audience are on the same side of the screen. The projector shines onto the viewer-facing surface, which reflects the image toward the audience.
How front projection works
The projector casts light onto the screen’s front, or viewing, surface. That surface reflects the projected image toward viewers. A purpose-built projection screen is common, but a suitable surface can work for a basic setup.

Front projection is used with portable or fixed screens. Screen surfaces vary: technical references describe matte, beaded, lenticular, and high-gain aluminum designs, while some manufacturers also offer specialized high-gain and ambient-light-rejecting surfaces. The right choice depends on the projector, room lighting, image size, and where viewers will sit; no single surface suits every setup.

How front projection differs from rear projection

What to consider when setting up front projection
- Projector placement: Check where the projector can sit and whether people or objects are likely to cross its path.
- Room light: Ambient light affects screen choice and the viewing conditions. Specialized surfaces are available, but manufacturer descriptions of their products are not independent proof of performance in every room.
- Screen and image: Match the surface and screen geometry to the projector, intended image size, and installation.
- Audience position: Consider viewing angles and where people will sit before choosing a screen surface.
- Available space: If a projector cannot be placed behind the screen, front projection may fit more easily. If people need to move in front of the image without blocking it, rear projection may be more suitable when there is room behind the screen.
A dedicated screen is not mandatory if you already have a suitable surface. Before buying one, check the projector’s throw and placement, the intended image size, room lighting, and audience viewing positions.
