Free-roam VR is a location-based virtual-reality experience where people physically walk around a defined play area and their movement is tracked and represented in the virtual environment. The exact space, tracking method, and number of simultaneous users depend on the system: “free-roam” describes a type of experience, not one universal technical standard.
How free-roam VR works
Headsets track participants’ positions in a physical play space. Software maps those positions to a virtual scene so that walking through the real area moves the participant through the experience. In a shared session, the system must also keep participants’ locations aligned consistently in the virtual world.

Tracking approaches vary. They may use headset-based inside-out tracking, external tracking equipment, a shared map, markers, or a combination. HTC describes inside-out tracking and location sharing in its LBSS documentation; its overview of location-based experiences also describes marker-based tracking for sharing position data between headsets.
How it differs from room-scale VR
Room-scale VR usually means moving within an individual, bounded play area. Free-roam location-based experiences are designed for walking more freely through a larger area, sometimes with several headsets aligned to the same map. This is a practical distinction, not a formal taxonomy: the label alone does not specify a minimum room size, tracking technology, or participant count.

Platform examples show why dimensions should be treated as system-specific. HTC describes a 10 m × 10 m space for one server-based VIVE multi-user configuration, while its LBE mode documentation says certain standalone headsets can operate in an area up to 33 m × 30 m (1,000 square meters). Neither figure defines free-roam VR generally.
What space and equipment does it require?
A venue needs a clearly defined play area, tracking coverage that works across it, and an experience designed for the space and intended number of users. In shared sessions, the design and operating procedures also need to address participant separation, joining and leaving, and tracking loss. Supported headsets, accessories, maximum area, and procedures vary by product and installation, so there is no universal equipment list.

For example, HTC states that Focus Vision, Focus 3, and XR Elite can use LBE mode in an area up to 33 m × 30 m (1,000 square meters). This is HTC’s specification for those named devices, not a general venue requirement; consult the HTC LBE mode documentation for current compatibility details.
That scale is different from an individual headset boundary. Meta recommends a 9 ft × 9 ft space, including a 6 ft × 6 ft unobstructed playable area, for its documented boundary use case. Safety in shared physical spaces
People wearing headsets may not see other participants or obstacles directly. Meta Horizon OS Developers cautions that “Restricting free space to move around or instructing users to follow the same path while physically present with others can increase the risk of contact.” Its guidance also recommends pausing a shared experience in certain situations when tracking is lost during asynchronous joining or leaving. - Headsets and equipment: Which headsets are supported, and is external tracking hardware required?
- Session flow: How do participants join, leave, or re-enter the play area?
- Tracking loss: What happens to the experience if a headset loses tracking?
- Collision prevention: What physical-space procedures help keep participants separated?
Free-roam VR is used in settings such as arcades, training simulators, and amusement park rides, but the experience and operating requirements differ by venue and system.
