What Is Electronic Code Book (ECB) Encryption?

Electronic Code Book (ECB) is a block-cipher mode that encrypts each block independently. Because matching plaintext blocks yield matching ciphertext blocks, ECB can reveal patterns in encrypted data.

Electronic Code Book (ECB) is a mode of operation for a block cipher. It encrypts each block independently with the same key, so identical plaintext blocks produce identical ciphertext blocks. That repeated-block behavior can reveal patterns in a message, even when its contents are not readable.

What does ECB stand for?

ECB stands for Electronic Code Book. In cryptography, it names a mode of operation for a block cipher—not a separate cipher or, by itself, a complete security recommendation. NIST’s glossary lists the term and its expanded form: NIST CSRC: ECB glossary entry.

How does ECB encryption work?

A block cipher processes data in fixed-size blocks. ECB divides the plaintext into those blocks and encrypts each block independently using the same key. There is no dependency between one block’s encryption and another’s.

The key consequence is that two identical plaintext blocks encrypted under the same key produce identical ciphertext blocks. An observer may therefore recognize repeated structure or patterns in the encrypted message, even without recovering the underlying text. NIST describes this repeated-plaintext behavior in its security policy material and a NIST-hosted textbook excerpt.

Why can repeated blocks matter?

Encryption is meant to conceal information, but ECB’s independent treatment of blocks preserves visible relationships between repeated portions of the plaintext. Those relationships can expose aspects of a message’s structure. The text remains encrypted; the leakage is about repetition and pattern, not automatic recovery of the whole message.

How does ECB relate to other block-cipher modes?

NIST Special Publication 800-38A specifies five confidentiality modes: ECB, Cipher Block Chaining (CBC), Cipher Feedback (CFB), Output Feedback (OFB), and Counter (CTR). They differ in how blocks are related and what additional inputs or state they use. ECB’s defining property is that blocks are encrypted independently, making identical plaintext blocks visibly linkable in the ciphertext. The fact that these modes are listed together does not establish one universally best choice for every application. See NIST SP 800-38A.

Where might you see the name ECB?

Technical interfaces may use the label MODE_ECB to refer to this mode; Python’s PEP 272 documents that naming convention in a cryptographic API context: Python PEP 272. The label identifies the mode and does not, on its own, say whether a particular system provides all the protections its application needs.
