What Is Dynamic Node Addressing in IEEE 1394 (FireWire)?

IEEE 1394 dynamically assigns physical node IDs during self-identification. These temporary bus locators differ from a device’s unique ID and can change after reconfiguration.

In IEEE 1394 (FireWire), dynamic node addressing is the automatic assignment of temporary physical IDs to devices during bus self-identification. The IDs help devices communicate on the current bus; they are not permanent device identities and may change after a reset or topology change.

How IEEE 1394 assigns node IDs

When the bus initializes, its nodes configure themselves as a connected topology before normal transactions proceed. This process includes tree identification and self-identification.

  1. Bus initialization: A newly added or removed device, or another need to reconfigure the bus, triggers initialization or a bus reset. Nodes clear prior topology information.
  2. Tree identification: Nodes establish parent-and-child relationships in the bus tree, and a root is selected.
  3. Self-identification: Nodes identify themselves and report information about capabilities. The process assigns physical node IDs and communicates topology and capability information. An IEEE tutorial summarizes its role as assigning physical node numbers, exchanging speed capabilities with neighbors, and broadcasting basic capabilities.
  4. Normal operation: Devices use the configured topology and IDs for arbitration and transactions until another reconfiguration occurs.

What a node ID contains—and what it identifies

RFC 2734 describes the IEEE 1394 node ID as 16 bits: a 10-bit bus ID and a 6-bit physical ID. The physical ID is assigned during self-identification and locates a node on that bus. The RFC distinguishes it from the 64-bit node unique ID, or EUI-64, which identifies a node among manufactured serial-bus nodes. See RFC 2734, IPv4 over IEEE 1394.

  • Physical ID: A bus-level locator assigned during configuration; it can change after a reset or topology change.
  • Node unique ID (EUI-64): A distinct identifier intended to identify the node beyond its current physical position on the bus.
  • IP address: A higher-layer network address, not the same thing as either the physical ID or the node unique ID.

Why software must account for bus resets

A reset can change a node’s physical ID, so a mapping saved before the reset may no longer point to the same device. RFC 3146 warns that the node_ID may change after a bus reset and recommends clearing mapping caches on reset. Bus software should therefore discard or rebuild physical-ID mappings as part of reconfiguration rather than treating them as permanent. See RFC 3146, Transmission of IPv6 Packets over IEEE 1394 Networks.

“Dynamic node addressing” can mean something else

The phrase is not unique to IEEE 1394. AppleTalk also uses dynamic node-address assignment, but its startup process involves selecting a candidate node ID and checking for conflicts. Here, the term refers specifically to IEEE 1394’s bus initialization, tree identification, and self-identification process.
