The call can go to an employee’s extension, a department route, or another inbound destination without an operator transferring it.
What does direct inward dialing mean?
DID is a telephone service or routing arrangement that makes public numbers available for reaching destinations within an organization’s phone system. The public number a caller dials is a DID number; the system’s configuration determines where the call goes. Cisco defines DID in its technical documentation as a service that lets callers dial directly to an extension on a PBX or packet voice system without an operator or automated attendant. DID does not mean every number must point to one person or one desk phone. A business can configure a number to reach an extension, a department, or another inbound destination. Yeastar also uses the alternate term DDI, or direct dial-in. Yeastar’s DID number overview

- A telephone provider provisions one or more public numbers and associates them with a telephone service or call-delivery arrangement.
- The caller dials one of those numbers.
- The provider delivers the call to the organization’s phone system or a compatible endpoint.
- The receiving system applies its routing configuration and sends the call to the appropriate extension, department, or other destination.
The delivery details depend on the implementation. In Cisco’s documented traditional trunk example, the trunk forwards the final digits to a PBX or gateway, which maps them to an extension. That final-digit behavior is specific to the legacy trunk context described in Cisco’s documentation; it is not a universal rule for DID. Cisco’s trunk example

Does DID require a PBX?
No. A PBX is one documented way to receive and route DID calls, but it is not the only possible destination arrangement. With SIP, a provider can deliver a call to a PBX over a SIP trunk for further routing, or route it directly to a registered SIP phone or softphone. Twilio’s overview of DID and SIP call paths
How do DID, DDI, and a DID number differ?
- DID: Direct inward dialing, the common North American term in the cited documentation for the service or routing arrangement.
- DDI: Direct dial-in, an alternate term used in Yeastar’s documentation.
- DID number: The public number the caller dials. It is distinct from the phone-system rules that determine which destination receives the call.
- PBX: A business phone system that can map incoming numbers to extensions or other destinations.
- SIP trunk: A provider connection that can deliver calls to a SIP-capable phone system. Some SIP arrangements can instead route calls to a registered endpoint.
The IETF also documents SIP-PBX trunking and number-assignment context in RFC 6140.

- Delivery method: Whether the provider supports a traditional trunk, a SIP trunk, or SIP registration for the equipment or service you plan to use.
- Number handling: How the provider presents the dialed number to the receiving system and how that system maps it to a destination. Do not assume it receives only a fixed set of final digits.
- Compatibility and availability: Confirm supported trunk types, phone-system model or edition, number availability, and service conditions with the specific provider and system documentation; these details vary by location and equipment.
