Digital audio extraction (DAE), usually called CD ripping, reads audio data directly from a physical audio CD and saves it as digital audio files. It is not a recording of music played through speakers: the ripping software requests the disc’s digital data from an optical drive. Exact Audio Copy describes this as reading directly from the CD rather than using a sound card.
How digital audio extraction works
A ripping application reads the CD’s track layout, asks a CD-ROM or other compatible optical drive for the selected audio, then writes that data into files. Depending on the application, you can select tracks, choose an extraction speed, set file names and select an output format. Adobe Audition’s help explains the extraction workflow and advises choosing a speed supported by the drive.

The process requires both ripping software and a drive that can read audio CDs. A computer without an internal optical drive may use a compatible external USB CD/DVD drive; the interface alone does not guarantee compatibility, so check that the drive supports audio CD reading and works with the computer. What secure extraction changes
CD-reading errors can arise from the disc, the drive, or how data is handled. Secure extraction modes may reread problematic sectors, compare repeated reads, and account for drive behavior to detect or recover from errors. The details vary by software; a historical technical description of one recovery method should not be treated as a universal rule for current ripping programs. Exact Audio Copy describes secure modes that double-check sectors and reread or correct when needed.

Faster or burst modes prioritize speed and may do less software-level rereading or recovery. That is a trade-off, not a guarantee that a fast rip is wrong or a secure rip is perfect. Adobe recommends reducing extraction speed if errors occur. The drive’s supported speeds and the condition of the disc matter.
What AccurateRip verification tells you
AccurateRip compares checksums for extracted tracks with entries submitted to its online database. A match is useful corroboration that your extracted track data agrees with other submissions for that disc and track. It is not an independent proof that every possible read error has been ruled out. AccurateRip describes database verification as a way to address the limits of drive-based error detection.

If a track cannot be verified, that result alone does not mean the rip is corrupt. The disc or track may not be represented in the database; track boundaries, silence handling, or the drive’s read offset can also affect whether a comparison is possible. AccurateRip’s documentation notes that trimming leading or trailing silence can prevent verification of a full track. Its track-checking documentation explains this limitation.
As of September 2026, AccurateRip reports a database of 5.3 million unique discs, over 4 million key discs, and 536 million accurate rips. These are figures about AccurateRip’s own database, not independent estimates of all CD rips or a general error rate. The figures are reported on AccurateRip’s homepage.

How to judge whether a rip is okay
- Read the extraction log. Note reported read errors and whether the software completed its recovery process.
- Interpret checksums in context. Matching results between repeated reads or a database match add evidence of consistency; they do not establish that every drive error is detectable.
- Don’t treat “not verified” as “failed.” A missing database result may reflect absent data or differences in offsets, boundaries, or silence handling.
- Investigate reported errors. Try a slower supported speed and, if the software offers it, secure extraction with rereads. Disc condition and drive behavior can affect the outcome.
For a workflow or tool, consider its drive compatibility and offset handling, available verification, treatment of track boundaries and silence, output-format and naming controls, and the usefulness of its log. No single verification result removes every uncertainty; the strongest practical confidence comes from clean extraction reporting together with a matching database result where one is available.
