Deadlock is Valve’s early-development multiplayer game that blends third-person shooting and hero abilities with MOBA-style lanes, team objectives, and in-match progression. In the current playtest description, two teams of six collect Souls, buy items, upgrade abilities, and push toward the opposing team’s Patron. Valve says access is limited to friend invites through playtesters; the game is not yet available on Steam and has no announced release date. Valve’s Steam listing may change as development continues.

What is Deadlock?

Deadlock is a team-based game from Valve, described on its Steam listing as “a multiplayer game in early development.” Its current playtest combines third-person aiming and shooting with hero abilities and systems associated with multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games, including lanes, team objectives, and progression during a match.

That hybrid description is a plain-language summary of the current playtest, not an official genre label from Valve. The rules and systems are still subject to change.

How do you play Deadlock?

A current beginner guide describes matches as six-versus-six. Players fight as heroes, collect Souls, spend them on items, upgrade abilities, and advance along three lanes toward the enemy Patron. The guide is a third-party explanation of the playtest, so treat its mechanics as a snapshot rather than a permanent specification: DramaLock’s beginner guide, published May 11, 2026 and updated July 21, 2026.

Fight, collect Souls, and improve

Shooting and abilities help decide individual encounters. Souls are the progression resource in the guide’s description: players earn them during play and use them to buy items, while ability upgrades further develop a hero during the match.

Turn combat into lane pressure

Winning a fight matters because it can help a team move forward, contest objectives, and make progress toward the enemy Patron. The aim is not simply to accumulate eliminations; combat fits into a larger effort to pressure lanes and advance as a team.

Is Deadlock a MOBA or a shooter?

It has elements of both. Combat takes place from a third-person perspective, with aiming, shooting, and hero abilities. The team also manages Souls and upgrades, applies pressure across lanes, and works toward a shared base objective—features that give the match a MOBA-style strategic layer.

Compared with a conventional top-down, click-targeted MOBA, Deadlock’s camera and combat are shooter-like. Compared with a conventional shooter, its lane progression, team objectives, and purchase-and-upgrade loop give players more to manage beyond winning the next firefight. That comparison describes broad genre differences; it is not a detailed comparison with a particular game.

How can you get access to Deadlock?

At the time of Valve’s Steam listing checked on October 7, 2026, access was limited to friend invites through playtesters. The listing said the game was not yet available on Steam and that its release date was to be announced. These are time-sensitive details, so check the official Steam page for the current status. Do not assume that the playtest is open to everyone or that a release date has been set.

What does early development mean for players?

Valve says Deadlock is in early development and notes that its art is temporary and its gameplay experimental. In practice, that means the current playtest can give newcomers a sense of the game’s direction, but its mechanics, presentation, and access arrangements may change. Details such as a fixed hero count, match duration, or final rules should not be assumed from the broad match description.
