It provides a platform-as-a-service control plane—handling builds, deployments, domains, HTTPS, health checks, and operations—while Docker on your connected servers runs the workloads.
That makes Coolify a practical alternative for developers who want Heroku- or Vercel-style workflows without handing all infrastructure decisions to a platform provider. You supply the servers and accept responsibility for their capacity, security, backups, updates, monitoring, and availability.

What Coolify actually is
Coolify is software you install yourself or use as a managed control plane through Coolify Cloud. In either case, it coordinates deployments to servers that you connect over SSH. Docker runs the resulting containers on those servers; Coolify is the interface and automation layer that tells them what to build, where to run it, and how to expose it.
The distinction matters. Coolify is not a replacement for the servers, storage, networking, or operating-system maintenance underneath your applications. It gives you a consistent way to operate those resources. You can keep the control plane and workloads on infrastructure you select, rather than accepting a provider’s fixed runtime model.

The project’s own description is precise: “Coolify is an open source, self-hostable platform for deploying and managing applications, databases, and services on servers you control.”
How Coolify works
The control plane and workload servers
A Coolify installation stores deployment configuration and coordinates actions. You then register one or more servers with it over SSH. Each connected server runs Docker workloads. The arrangement lets one Coolify instance manage resources on multiple machines instead of limiting every application to the machine hosting the dashboard.
For an HTTP resource, a request goes to the reverse proxy on the server where that resource runs. The Coolify control plane does not sit in the path of application traffic or relay every request. This separation means the control plane can manage deployments without becoming a mandatory data-plane hop for users visiting your site.
Build, pull, and run
When you deploy, Coolify obtains your application source or image, builds or pulls a container image, and starts the application as a Docker container on the selected server. The source can be:
- A repository on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, or Gitea.
- A project with a Dockerfile.
- A Git-based Docker Compose definition.
- An already-built Docker image.
This range is the core difference from platforms that expect a particular language buildpack or framework layout. If you can describe the application as a Docker image or Compose workload, Coolify can generally treat it as a deployable resource, subject to the image’s own requirements.
What you can deploy
Web applications and static sites
Coolify can deploy static sites as well as full-stack applications. A repository-based application can be built from its Dockerfile or from the build instructions represented in a Compose setup. You can attach a domain, enable HTTPS, and let the reverse proxy on the workload server serve the resulting container.

Databases
Databases are first-class workloads rather than an external service you must buy separately. The documentation lists PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, MongoDB, and ClickHouse among supported examples. Running a database yourself gives you control over its location and configuration, but also makes storage durability, upgrades, access control, and backups your responsibility.
Docker-compatible services
The project advertises more than 300 one-click open-source service templates in its current documentation, accessed October 15, 2026. Templates can reduce the work of creating a Compose definition for common services, but “one-click” does not remove the need to size the server, set credentials, restrict network access, or plan persistence.
Where it can run
Coolify says it can use a virtual private server, bare-metal machine, Raspberry Pi, or another server that accepts SSH and can run the required Docker workloads. That includes homelabs and small production systems, but the appropriate choice depends on workload size, storage needs, expected traffic, and the redundancy you require. A Raspberry Pi can be a sensible small self-hosting option; it is not automatically suitable for a busy production database or a multi-service system.
For a VPS-based deployment, Antihost lists a one-click Coolify image for Linux VPS plans with full root access and NVMe storage; its VPS regions include the USA East, the Netherlands, and Ukraine.
Self-hosted Coolify versus Coolify Cloud
The two editions expose the same core feature set for deploying and managing applications, databases, and one-click services. The important difference is who maintains the Coolify control plane.

| Consideration | Self-hosted Coolify | Coolify Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Coolify subscription | Listed as “Free Forever,” with full feature access and no platform restrictions. | $5 per month base price for two connected servers, plus $3 per month for each additional server, according to the pricing page accessed October 15, 2026. |
| Application servers | You provide and operate the servers. | You still provide and operate the servers where applications, databases, and services run. |
| Control-plane maintenance | You install Coolify, apply updates, protect it, monitor it, and plan its backups and restoration. | The hosted service maintains the Coolify control plane. |
| Feature access | Full feature access is listed for the self-hosted edition. | The official guidance says the core deployment and service features are the same. |
| Infrastructure bill | Your server, storage, bandwidth, and backup costs remain separate from Coolify. | You pay the Coolify subscription in addition to the costs of your connected servers and related infrastructure. |
“Free” therefore describes the self-hosted platform subscription, not a zero-cost production environment. A server, persistent storage, bandwidth, backups, and your time all have a cost. Cloud removes control-plane administration, but it does not turn your workload servers into a fully managed application platform.

Coolify compared with Heroku and Vercel
Readers coming from Heroku or Vercel usually care less about a feature checklist than about who owns the operational work. Coolify changes that boundary.
| Axis | Coolify | Managed platform model |
|---|---|---|
| Control and data location | Configuration and workloads live on infrastructure you provide and select. | The provider abstracts more of the underlying infrastructure and its location. |
| Deployment inputs | Git repositories, Dockerfiles, Compose definitions, and prebuilt images are supported. | Often centered on the provider’s supported build and runtime conventions. |
| Workload range | Static sites, full-stack apps, databases, and arbitrary Docker-compatible services can coexist on connected servers. | Capabilities depend on the provider’s supported runtimes and managed-service catalog. |
| Operations burden | Self-hosting requires server patching, security, monitoring, backups, capacity planning, and incident response. Coolify Cloud removes only control-plane maintenance. | The provider takes on more platform operations, while your application still needs correct configuration and maintenance. |
| Pricing model | No self-hosted Coolify subscription, but you pay for infrastructure; Cloud adds a platform subscription while you bring servers. | Infrastructure and platform costs are generally bundled or metered according to the provider’s model. |
| Scaling and reliability | Coolify can connect to multiple servers, but redundancy, failover, capacity, and backup design remain yours unless your infrastructure supplies them. | The provider may supply more built-in platform resilience, depending on its service and plan. |
This is not a promise of Heroku- or Vercel-level uptime. Coolify can provide the deployment workflow, but reliability depends on the architecture you build underneath it: redundant servers where necessary, durable storage, tested restores, monitoring, and a response plan.
What Coolify costs
Self-hosted edition
The self-hosted edition is listed as free forever with full feature access and no platform restrictions. Your actual budget must include the machine running the Coolify control plane, the machines running workloads, persistent disks, backups, bandwidth, and any monitoring or alerting systems you choose.

Coolify Cloud
The current pricing page lists a $5-per-month base price covering two connected servers and $3 per month for every additional connected server. Those are Coolify Cloud charges as shown on October 15, 2026; they do not include the servers on which your applications and databases run.
Capacity is a separate decision
There is no single server size that fits every Coolify installation. A static site, a small personal API, a database, and several resource-intensive services have different CPU, memory, disk, and backup needs. Start with the resource requirements of your containers and database, then leave headroom for builds, deployments, logs, and recovery tasks. Do not treat the platform subscription—or its absence—as a capacity recommendation.

curl -fsSL https://cdn.coollabs.io/coolify/install.sh | bash
Piping a remote script into a shell is a consequential administrative action. Review the current installation documentation and the script at https://cdn.coollabs.io/coolify/install.sh before executing it, and use a server you are prepared to administer.
- Choose the control-plane location. Decide whether Coolify itself will run on a dedicated machine, a homelab server, or another supported host. Keep the control plane separate from critical workloads if you want maintenance or failure there to have less impact on applications.
- Prepare workload servers. Select the machines that will run containers. Confirm that they accept SSH, can run Docker workloads, have enough CPU, memory, and disk for your applications, and have a backup approach for persistent data.
- Install the control plane. Connect to the selected server and run the command from the README after reviewing it. Complete the initial setup in the Coolify interface.
- Register additional servers. Add workload hosts through Coolify’s server-management workflow and provide the SSH details it requires. Verify that the connection succeeds before attempting a deployment.
- Deploy a low-risk test resource. Start with a small application or static site. Confirm that the build completes, the container remains healthy, the domain resolves to the correct server, and HTTPS is issued before moving production traffic.
- Document recovery. Record how to restore Coolify’s configuration, reconnect servers, restore database data, and recover DNS if the control plane or a workload host fails.
Deploying an application from Git
The exact labels can change as Coolify evolves, but the deployment flow follows the same decisions:
- Select the source. Choose the Git provider containing the application or use a repository URL supported by your setup.
- Choose the build method. Use the repository’s Dockerfile, a Git-based Docker Compose definition, or another supported image-building path. If you already publish an image, configure Coolify to pull that image instead of building it on the server.
- Pick the destination server. Select the connected host that has the required capacity and network access.
- Configure runtime values. Add environment variables, ports, volumes, and persistent storage deliberately. Secrets should not be committed to a public repository.
- Attach the domain and HTTPS. Point DNS to the server running the resource, configure the domain in Coolify, and verify that the reverse proxy obtains and serves HTTPS.
- Deploy and inspect health. Watch the build and container logs, test the application through its domain, and confirm that the configured health check reflects real readiness rather than merely an open process.
- Define update behavior. Decide how new commits or image tags trigger deployments, and make sure a failed build or unhealthy container does not silently replace a working release.
Running databases and stateful services safely
Coolify makes it possible to place a database beside your application, but convenience does not change database engineering. Before putting production data on a self-managed server, decide:
- Where database files live and whether that storage survives a container replacement.
- How often backups run, where copies are stored, and how you will test a restore.
- Which network paths can reach the database and whether public exposure is necessary.
- How credentials are rotated and how application secrets are protected.
- How upgrades, migrations, disk-full conditions, and corruption will be handled.
- What downtime and data-loss window your architecture permits.
A one-click template can create a service quickly; it cannot provide a backup policy or guarantee that a single server failure will be harmless.

Protect the control plane
Coolify controls deployments, server connections, domains, and credentials, so the dashboard and its host deserve the same attention as production infrastructure. Restrict administrative access, keep the host patched, use strong authentication, and avoid exposing management interfaces more broadly than necessary.
Patch every layer
Self-hosting creates several update streams: the Coolify control plane, the host operating system, Docker, reverse-proxy components, application images, and databases. Establish an update window, read release notes, and keep a tested rollback or restore path. Coolify Cloud reduces the control-plane update work, but your workload hosts and containers still need maintenance.

Monitor the failure modes users will notice
Monitor at least deployment failures, container health, disk usage, memory pressure, certificate expiry, database availability, backup success, and DNS or reverse-proxy errors. A green deployment job does not prove that the application is usable; synthetic requests and application-level checks catch failures that a process health check cannot.
Scaling, availability, and limits
Coolify can connect to multiple servers, which lets you place workloads according to capacity or isolation needs. It does not, by itself, create a highly available cluster. You must design how traffic moves when a server fails, how stateful services replicate, where backups are kept, and how DNS or load balancing changes during recovery.
Capacity planning also remains yours. Build jobs consume resources in addition to running containers. Databases need memory and fast, durable storage. Logs, image layers, and backups consume disk. Measure your workloads in your environment rather than relying on a universal Coolify speed or resource figure; no official benchmark establishes one for all deployments.

Good fit
- Developers comfortable administering Linux-like servers, SSH, Docker, and networking.
- Teams that want to keep workloads and configuration on infrastructure they select.
- Projects that need databases or unusual Docker-compatible services next to web applications.
- Agencies or homelab operators managing several servers through one control plane.
- Organizations trying to reduce dependence on a provider-specific runtime or buildpack.
Less suitable
- Teams that do not want responsibility for patching, backups, capacity, security, and incident response.
- Projects requiring provider-operated failover without designing and paying for that infrastructure.
- Organizations without a plan for persistent storage and database recovery.
- Workloads where the team cannot monitor and troubleshoot the underlying hosts.
A practical decision checklist
Choose self-hosted Coolify when the control and flexibility are worth operating the servers yourself. Choose Coolify Cloud when you want the same deployment interface but prefer someone else to maintain the Coolify control plane. In both cases, answer these questions before production:
- Which server runs Coolify, and what happens if it is unavailable?
- Which servers run each workload, and do they have enough headroom for builds and failover?
- Where are database and file backups stored, and has a restore been tested?
- Who receives alerts for failed deployments, expiring certificates, full disks, and unhealthy containers?
- How are secrets, SSH access, and administrative accounts protected?
- What is the recovery procedure if a workload server, storage device, or DNS record fails?
Coolify is best understood as a flexible Docker operations layer, not a magic replacement for infrastructure engineering. It can deliver a Heroku- or Vercel-like deployment experience while leaving you in control of the machines and data—but that control comes with the work of keeping those machines dependable.
