The standards-based feature family associated with that goal is Data Center Bridging (DCB). CEE is not a single IEEE standard or a separate kind of Ethernet cable.
What CEE means—and how it relates to DCB
Traditional Ethernet carries traffic over a shared physical network. CEE referred to efforts to improve Ethernet for data-center workloads that had often used separate networks, such as storage and ordinary data traffic. IEEE describes the aim of Data Center Bridging as allowing applications to run over one physical infrastructure. IEEE 802.1 Data Center Bridging Task Group

Use Data Center Bridging (DCB) for the standards-based family of enhancements. CEE is a historical or vendor-specific label that may appear in product documentation. The terms are related, but they are not interchangeable names for one universal standard: DCB comprises distinct functions defined through IEEE work.

- 10 Gbps PCIe Network Card: With the latest 10GBase-T Technology, TX401 delivers extreme speeds of up to 10 Gbps, which is 10× faster than typical Gigabit adapters, guaranteeing smooth data transmissions for both internet access and local data transmissions[1]
- Versatile Compatibility: With extreme speed and ultra-low latency, 10GBase-T is backwards compatible with multiple data rates (10 Gbps, 5 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, 1 Gbps, 100 Mbps), automatically negotiating between higher and lower speed connections
- QoS: Quality of Service technology delivers prioritized performance for gamers and ensures to avoid network congestion for PC gaming
- Free CAT6A Ethernet Cable: To maximize TX401's performance, a 1.5 m CAT6A Ethernet Cable is included—rated for up to 10 Gbps while a regular cable is only rated for 1 Gbps
- Low-Profile and Full-Height Brackets: In addition to the standard bracket, a low-profile bracket is provided for mini tower computer cases
- Priority-based Flow Control (PFC), IEEE 802.1Qbb: Provides link-level pause behavior separately for traffic priorities, rather than pausing all traffic on the link as conventional Ethernet PAUSE can. IEEE describes PFC as a mechanism controlled independently for each priority. This allows congestion handling for selected traffic classes without necessarily stopping other classes on that link. IEEE 802.1 DCB overview
- Enhanced Transmission Selection (ETS), IEEE 802.1Qaz: Allocates bandwidth among traffic classes while allowing strict-priority treatment where configured. If one class does not use its allocation, ETS can make that unused capacity available to other classes. IEEE 802.1 DCB overview
- Congestion Notification (CN), IEEE 802.1Qau: Provides end-to-end congestion management for protocols without their own congestion control. IEEE also anticipated timely benefit for protocols such as TCP. CN has a different scope and operation from PFC; it is not another name for link-level pause. IEEE 802.1 DCB overview
- Data Center Bridging eXchange (DCBX): Uses LLDP-related discovery and exchange to communicate capabilities and configuration between neighboring devices, helping them apply compatible DCB settings. IEEE 802.1 DCB overview
IEEE 802.1Q-2014 records the incorporation of amendments including 802.1Qbb and 802.1Qaz into the bridged-network standard. That standards history is another reason to describe DCB as a feature family rather than call CEE a single standard. IEEE 802.1 DCB Task Group
Does CEE make Ethernet lossless?
Not as an unconditional end-to-end guarantee. PFC is intended to prevent congestion-related loss for selected priorities by pausing traffic on a link; Intel describes DCB as capable of limiting or eliminating dropped packets during stress. Those are goals and capabilities of mechanisms, not proof that every packet will be delivered in every network, workload, or failure condition. Intel DCB guide, version 30.6

- 10GbE Performance & USB-C Requirements: Upgrade to fast wired networking with this USB C to 10Gb Ethernet adapter, supporting 10G/5G/2.5G/1G/100M auto-negotiation for broad compatibility. Great for NAS access, large backups, content workflows, and low-latency gaming. Note: 10GbE is the theoretical link rate; real-world Windows throughput is typically ~7Gbps depending on setup. For best results, use a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) USB-C port or higher.
- Real-World macOS Speed: Compatible with Thunderbolt 3/4/5 and USB4 ports. On Macs, macOS may report a 5Gb link rate, while typical real-world throughput is ~5Gbps depending on the Mac model, network equipment, cabling, and test method. We continuously validate macOS performance and publish the latest notes and updates on our support page.
- Stable Performance with Advanced Chipset: Powered by the Realtek RTL8159 USB 10G controller for efficient power use and minimal heat in typical operation. Designed to address the heat concerns common with some 10GbE adapters, this 10Gb Ethernet to USB C adapter delivers cool and reliable performance in a compact design.
- Premium & Durable Design: Built to last with a rugged aluminum housing plus integrated thermal silicone and a heat sink to help dissipate heat and withstand daily wear, scuffs, and impacts. The braided USB-C pigtail cable adds strength and flexibility to help prevent fraying and reduce port strain—ideal for travel kits, mobile workstations, and tight dock setups.
- Easy Setup & Wide Compatibility: Plug-and-play on the latest macOS and Windows. Some older OS releases may limit performance; if speed is reduced on Windows or certain Linux kernels, install the latest Realtek RTL8159 USB 10G driver (macOS typically needs no manual driver—keep macOS updated). Works with USB-C, USB4, and Thunderbolt 5/4/3 devices including MacBook, iMac, Dell XPS, Surface, iPad Pro, and more. Not for Android / Xbox One S.
Whether a deployment achieves its intended behavior depends on configuration and support along the network path. PFC acts per priority on a link, while ETS schedules traffic classes and DCBX helps neighbors exchange settings; none alone guarantees loss-free operation across an entire system.
What to check when evaluating CEE or DCB support
A product listing that says “CEE” or “DCB” is not enough to establish that it will interoperate with a particular network. Check the capabilities and configuration of the complete path, including endpoints and intermediate switches.

- Confirm that each endpoint and switch supports the required DCB functions, rather than relying on a general CEE/DCB label.
- Check which PFC priorities are supported and review vendor documentation for buffer and headroom behavior.
- Verify the ETS traffic-class allocations and any strict-priority settings needed by the workload.
- Determine which DCBX variant is used and which device or software controls configuration.
- Check compatibility for the specific hardware model, firmware, driver, and software combination.
CEE and IEEE DCBX variants exist, so similarly named configurations should not be assumed interchangeable. For example, Intel’s version 29.3 guide says its OS DCBX stack defaults to CEE and automatically transitions to IEEE when it receives IEEE TLVs. That behavior is specific to the documented Intel stack and version, not a universal rule for Ethernet devices. Intel DCB guide, version 29.3
IEEE descriptions explain what the mechanisms do, but they do not establish whether a specific retail switch model supports them. Confirm the exact model’s manufacturer specifications and interoperability guidance before selecting equipment. IEEE 802.1 DCB Task Group
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- TEN GIGABIT ON WINDOWS 11: Owners report iPerf runs near line rate over Cat6a once the Realtek 10G driver is on; on macOS this class of adapter settles well short of that, so buy it for a Windows machine
- YOUR PORT DECIDES THE SPEED: Full 10G needs a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 20Gbps port, or Thunderbolt 3, 4 or USB4; a plain USB 3.0 or 3.1 port still links but tops out lower, so check your laptop before ordering
- INSTALL THE REALTEK 10G DRIVER FIRST: The generic driver Windows ships holds the link well below 10G; the card in the box points to the right Realtek package, and full speed appears after one reboot
- SIX LINK SPEEDS, ONE CABLE RULE: Negotiates 10G, 5G, 2.5G, 1G, 100M and 10M so it drops into any switch; 10G wants Cat6a out to 100m, while Cat5e and Cat6 carry 5G and 2.5G the same way
- ALUMINUM SHELL IS THE HEATSINK: Ribbed alloy body spreads heat with no fan and no noise, so it runs warm under sustained transfers by design; in the box are the adapter with attached USB-C cable and a driver card
