What Is Claude Code? A Complete Overview

Claude Code is Anthropic’s terminal-based AI coding tool for understanding and changing software projects. Here’s how it works, what setup requires, and what to consider about permissions.

Claude Code is Anthropic’s terminal-based AI coding tool. It works in the context of a software project, where it can help explain a codebase, locate how a feature works, propose or make code changes, and assist with Git tasks. You interact with it from a development environment rather than using it as a general-purpose coding course.

What Claude Code does

Claude Code can inspect project files and use the surrounding code as context for development tasks. Anthropic describes asking it to explain parts of a codebase, find where behavior is implemented, make changes, and help with Git operations such as commits and pull requests. These are tasks it can assist with, not guaranteed outcomes: developers still need to check its work.

It is software you install and launch in a development environment. The command-line interface (CLI) supports conversational, interactive work as well as non-interactive use that can fit scripted workflows.

How you use it

Interactive work

In a project directory, you can start an interactive session and ask questions or request changes in ordinary language. For example, you might ask it to explain a module, trace where a behavior is implemented, or propose a targeted edit.

Non-interactive and session workflows

The CLI reference documents print mode, invoked with claude -p, alongside options for continuing or resuming sessions. It also lists controls for directory access, tool permissions, output formats, model selection, and permission modes. The exact available flags can change, so consult Anthropic’s CLI reference before building a script or relying on a particular option.

What you need to run it

Anthropic’s setup guide lists the following requirements. These are the requirements shown on that guide and may change; check the current page for the latest instructions.

  • macOS 10.15 or later; Ubuntu 20.04 or later or Debian 10 or later; or Windows 10 or later with WSL or Git for Windows.
  • At least 4 GB of RAM.
  • Node.js 18 or later for the documented npm installation route.
  • An internet connection for authentication and AI processing.

The guide lists Anthropic Console, Claude Pro or Max, and enterprise access through Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI as authentication routes. It says Console authentication requires active billing. The guide does not establish current prices or usage limits, so check the relevant current plan and service terms rather than assuming access is included or unlimited.

Installation and first launch

Anthropic’s setup guide documents npm installation with the following command. Installation instructions are time-sensitive, so compare them with the live guide before using them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install Claude Code using the documented command: npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code. The guide cautions against using sudo npm install -g because it can cause permission problems and security risks.
  2. Change to the software project you want to work in.
  3. Run claude to launch it and follow the authentication prompts.

The setup guide also describes alternative installation methods, including a native binary marked alpha in the captured documentation. It mentions claude doctor as a way to check installation type. Check the current setup page for the status and instructions for these options: Anthropic’s Claude Code setup guide.

Permissions, safety, and data handling

Claude Code can take actions such as editing files or running commands, so permission settings matter. Anthropic’s security guidance describes approval prompts for actions and write access bounded by the working directory and its subfolders by default. Those safeguards do not remove the need to inspect what the tool proposes and what commands it runs. Review changes before accepting or relying on them, especially in important projects.

The CLI reference includes --dangerously-skip-permissions, which skips permission prompts; Anthropic explicitly warns to use it with caution. Avoid treating prompt approval as a substitute for understanding the action or its effects. See Anthropic’s security guidance and the current CLI reference for details.

Claude Code operates locally in a development environment, but prompts and model outputs are sent over the network for AI processing. Anthropic’s captured data-use page describes transmission as encrypted with TLS and says data is not encrypted at rest; that page is in French, so it should not be treated as a definitive statement of current English-language retention, model-training, or enterprise privacy terms. Check the applicable current terms and data-use documentation for those specifics.

Is Claude Code a good fit?

Its fit depends less on a single headline feature than on your setup and working habits. Before adopting it, consider:

  • Environment: whether your operating system and development environment meet the current documented requirements.
  • Access route: whether you will authenticate through Console, a Claude plan, or an enterprise platform your organization supports.
  • Workflow: whether interactive terminal sessions or scripted print-mode use better suit your tasks.
  • Risk tolerance: whether the permission controls and review practices are appropriate for the code and commands involved.

Current pricing, usage limits, and the full set of models available through each access route are not established here. Verify them directly with Anthropic or the relevant enterprise provider before making a purchasing or deployment decision.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
