The chip is the payment technology; the PIN is one possible way to verify the cardholder. Not every chip transaction requires a PIN.
What does Chip and PIN mean?
“Chip and PIN” commonly refers to EMV chip payment technology. EMV is the name associated with specifications administered by EMVCo. The term can be misleading, however: a chip transaction does not necessarily use a PIN. Depending on the payment system, region and transaction, cardholder verification may use a PIN, a signature, a device biometric or no verification.

EMVCo describes the scale of the technology as more than 15.6 billion EMV chip payment cards in use, powering 96% of in-store transactions globally. These figures are EMVCo’s current page claims, accessed October 7, 2026; deployment changes over time. EMVCo’s contact-chip overview
How does an inserted chip-card payment work?
- Insert the card. A contact chip card is placed in a compatible payment terminal’s chip reader, making physical contact.
- The card and terminal exchange information. They communicate the data needed to process the transaction.
- The chip creates a transaction-specific cryptogram. This one-time cryptographic code helps the issuer and point-of-sale terminal authenticate the card. It cannot simply be reused for another transaction.
- The system may verify the cardholder. If required, the transaction can use a supported cardholder verification method, such as a PIN.
The cryptogram helps reduce counterfeit-card fraud, but it does not make payment fraud impossible. EMV chip security is one part of a broader system involving the card, terminal, issuer and other controls.

Does every Chip and PIN transaction require a PIN?
No. A PIN is a cardholder verification method, not the chip itself. EMV specifications support online and offline PIN, signature, no cardholder verification, and device biometrics. Which method applies depends on the market, payment setup and transaction. EMVCo’s cardholder-verification explanation makes this distinction clear: EMV Specifications: Enabling Safe and Convenient Payments.
How is Chip and PIN different from contactless?
Both are ways to make an in-person payment using EMV technology. The main difference is how the payment device communicates with the terminal.

- ✅ SIZE & FEATURE: 3.375" X 2.125" (CR80/credit card) 50 pcs, Dual Side, Alcohol-Free Pre-saturated Cleaning Cards
- ✅ HOW TO USE: 1.Remove cleaning card from the pouch. 2.Place the cleaning card into the card reader as you would a credit card. 3.Turn the card over and repeat step2. 3.Discard the cleaning card properly. Repeat the process if necessary. Easy to use without dismantling equipment.
- ✅ WHERE TO USE: Designed to remove effectively contaminants on all card reader, hotel door, cretdit card machine, vending machine and optical reader heads. Works great both in the Chip and the magnetic swipe.
- ✅ USE REGULARLY: Regular use is a cost-effective way to prolong the service life of magnetic heads and prevent transaction errors caused by dirt and contaminant build-up. Once per week as a preventive maintenance and as an emergency cleaning to correct misreads when needed.
- ✅ INDIVIDUALLY SEALED: Cleaning cards are individually sealed for single use and long-term storage. No more worrying about drying out your pre-saturated cleaning card.
| Payment method | How it communicates | Cardholder verification |
|---|---|---|
| Contact chip | Insert the card so its chip makes physical contact with the terminal’s reader. | May use a PIN or another supported method; the transaction does not always require a PIN. |
| Contactless chip | Tap a contactless card near a compatible terminal. | Requirements vary by market and transaction. |
| Mobile wallet | Use an NFC-enabled mobile device near a compatible terminal; mobile wallets may use payment tokenisation. | May involve device biometrics or another method, depending on the device and transaction. |

What does the chip protect against?
The chip’s transaction-specific cryptogram helps authenticate the card and makes copied chip data harder to reuse for a counterfeit transaction. EMV chip technology also supports secure data exchange and risk management between payment devices and terminals. It reduces certain risks; it is not a guarantee against fraud, and cardholder verification is a separate possible layer of protection.
