Depending on your account, settings, device, and region, it may also offer tools such as web search, voice, image generation, or data analysis. Its responses can be wrong, so check important answers against reliable sources.
How ChatGPT works
ChatGPT responds to prompts—questions, requests, or instructions—and can use earlier turns in the same conversation to answer in context. You can ask a follow-up, refine a request, or tell it what kind of response you need. It is software, not a person or an authority, and it is not inherently a search engine: it can generate an answer from its capabilities and, when available, use tools such as web search. What you can use ChatGPT for
Common tasks include:
- Writing and language: brainstorm ideas, draft or revise text, summarize material, explain wording, and translate.
- Learning and problem solving: ask for an explanation, explore a subject with follow-up questions, study, or work through math and logic problems.
- Coding and data: get help with code or, where supported, upload structured data for analysis and visualizations.
- Images and documents: ask about an uploaded image, diagram, document, spreadsheet, or presentation when your account supports that file type.
- Current information: use web search to find information and links, or deep research for multi-step synthesis when those tools are available.
- Spoken conversation: use voice mode to speak with ChatGPT where the feature is available.
These are possible uses, not guarantees that every answer will be correct or that every account has every capability.
Tools are optional features, not the assistant itself
ChatGPT may include tools that extend what it can do. Web search can look for current information and provide links. Deep research can help synthesize information across multiple steps. Image input and generation, file and audio uploads, voice, and Canvas may also be available. In data analysis, ChatGPT can run code in a secure environment to analyze or visualize structured data; Canvas is an interactive workspace for co-writing, editing, or debugging. Feature access varies by plan and settings, and may also depend on client, region, model, or workspace.

Audio upload access is especially conditional: OpenAI’s October 6, 2026 release notes say audio uploads for transcription, summarization, and questions are available with paid subscriptions and workspaces, subject to workspace settings, region, client version, and model. OpenAI also cautions that transcripts can contain errors.
Where to use ChatGPT and how plans differ
OpenAI says ChatGPT is available at chatgpt.com and through its iOS and Android apps; trying it without an account is possible in supported regions. OpenAI groups its offerings into Free, Plus/Pro, and Business/Enterprise plans, with differences in tools, usage limits, workspace features, and administration. Limits depend on plan and model and can change.

There is no dependable, universal feature list that applies to every account. If you are choosing a plan, compare the current price and billing period, models and tools, usage limits, file/image/voice/research access, collaboration and admin controls, privacy terms, and regional or client availability. How to check ChatGPT’s answers
ChatGPT can make mistakes, including when an answer sounds confident. For questions about changing events, dates, times, or locations, ask for current sources if search is available, then open the links and assess whether they support the claim. A citation or link is a lead to check, not proof that the answer is correct. For consequential decisions, verify the information independently with an appropriate reliable source or professional.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Voice guidance puts it plainly: “ChatGPT can make mistakes. Check important information, especially for date-sensitive, time-sensitive, or location-sensitive questions.” Its web search help page explains how search can surface current information and links.
Privacy controls and your data
OpenAI’s FAQ says Temporary Chat does not appear in chat history, does not use or create memories, and is not used to train models. For other data choices and their full effects, consult the current Privacy Policy and account settings. To export data, OpenAI directs users to Settings → Data Controls; account deletion is available through Settings or the Privacy Portal. - Open chatgpt.com or the official ChatGPT app for iOS or Android. Account-free access depends on whether it is supported in your region.
- Type a question or instruction in the message box. Be specific about the task and the format you want—for example, ask for a short explanation, a list of options, or a draft.
- Use follow-up messages to correct, narrow, or build on the response. If you need current information, ask for sources and open them to check the answer.
