The network uses Ouroboros consensus: stake pools maintain the ledger and are selected to produce blocks, with selection influenced by the stake they control. ADA holders can delegate stake to a pool without transferring their coins to its operator, while the network’s extended unspent transaction output model shapes how transactions and smart contracts work.
Cardano and ADA: the difference
Cardano is the blockchain network and platform. ADA is its native cryptocurrency, used to pay transaction fees and participate in protocol rewards. The network’s consensus mechanism is called Ouroboros. Cardano describes it as a proof-of-stake protocol developed through peer-reviewed research in its proof-of-stake overview.

How Ouroboros produces blocks
Epochs and slots organize network time
Cardano divides time into epochs, which are made up of slots. According to the official Cardano node documentation, a slot lasts one second and a current epoch contains 432,000 slots, or five days. The documentation describes an average nomination every 20 seconds—21,600 nominations per epoch. A nomination is an expected opportunity for a pool to lead a slot, not a promise that a block will be produced and accepted every time.

Stake pools are selected to lead slots
Stake-pool operators run nodes that maintain the ledger and process transactions into blocks. Ouroboros selects stake pools as slot leaders, with the pool’s controlled stake influencing its chance of selection. ADA holders may delegate stake to a pool, contributing to the stake considered by the protocol without handing their ADA to the operator. Protocol incentives are designed to discourage delegation from concentrating in already-large pools. Cardano explains the roles of pools and delegation in its consensus overview and staking documentation.

Consensus also decides which chain to follow
Choosing a block producer is only part of consensus. Nodes verify blocks and apply chain-selection rules to determine which chain to recognize. Cardano’s consensus documentation describes recent blocks as transient until a settlement delay has passed. In practical terms, a newly produced block should not be treated as instantly irreversible: confidence in a transaction’s place in the chain increases as the network progresses beyond it.
Proof of stake compared with proof of work
In Cardano’s proof-of-stake design, stake pools take turns being selected for slot leadership according to protocol rules. In proof-of-work systems, participants compete using computational work to produce blocks. The approaches therefore differ in how block producers are chosen and what resources the process requires. Cardano’s documentation characterizes proof of stake as more energy-efficient than proof of work; that is the project’s description, not an independent, directly comparable energy measurement.

What delegation means for ADA holders
Delegation does not transfer ownership
Delegating ADA assigns its stake to a pool for protocol purposes; the ADA holder retains spending power rather than transferring the coins to the pool operator. Cardano’s delegation guide explains the process and its relationship to rewards.

Rewards vary and are not guaranteed
There is no fixed or guaranteed return for delegating. Rewards depend on pool performance and network parameters. Pool costs and the operator’s margin are deducted before the remaining rewards are shared between delegators and pool owners, as described in Cardano’s rewards documentation.

How Cardano’s EUTXO ledger works
Cardano uses an extended unspent transaction output model, usually abbreviated EUTXO. In a basic UTXO system, a transaction consumes previously unspent outputs and creates new outputs. Cardano extends that model by allowing scripts in addresses and additional data in outputs, features used to support smart contracts.
This structure affects how transactions and applications are designed. Developers should not assume that smart-contract patterns from account-based blockchains transfer unchanged to Cardano. Cardano’s EUTXO documentation presents local transaction validation and predictable execution costs as design properties; these are explanations of the model, not independent comparative performance results.

Cardano governance and its current framework
Cardano’s governance documentation identifies three participants: delegated representatives (DReps), stake-pool operators, and a constitutional committee. ADA holders can delegate voting rights to a DRep or register as one, and any ADA owner can submit a governance action. Which participants must ratify an action depends on the action type and the state of governance.

Managing ADA keys
A wallet manages the keys used to authorize ADA transactions; it does not physically hold the coins, whose records remain on the blockchain. Cardano’s wallet guide discusses hardware wallets and names Trezor Model T, Ledger Nano S Plus, and Ledger Nano X. Check current model compatibility and availability with the wallet provider before choosing a device.
