It began alongside Resident Evil 7 biohazard, but it now supports Capcom games across genres. In the Resident Evil series, Capcom has linked it to RE7’s realistic visuals and VR development, the Resident Evil 2 remake’s more detailed 3D environments, and Resident Evil Requiem’s path tracing and strand-based hair.
What is RE ENGINE?
A game engine is the software foundation developers use to build a game and make it run. Capcom describes RE ENGINE as a multi-platform engine built for the company’s own development workflows—not a consumer product or a tool sold to the public. The name does not mean “Resident Evil Engine”: Capcom says “RE” expresses its ambition to “Reach for the Moon.” Capcom’s 2025 Online Integrated Report says its titles were then being developed with the engine.

Capcom presents the engine as more than a renderer. Its production environment supports rendering, editing, playtesting and quality control. Teams can share assets between projects, while engine developers work with individual game teams to add or customize features. Capcom says this helps improve efficiency, but its published description is not a controlled comparison against other engines or studios.

Capcom developed RE ENGINE alongside Resident Evil 7 biohazard, released in 2017. In a 2016 developer interview, lead programmer Tomofumi Ishida said the previous engine could not deliver the realistic world the team wanted, so the game and its new engine were developed together.
#1 Best Overall
- TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
- RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
For RE7, Capcom cited detailed materials, character realism and airborne dust as examples of the engine’s visual goals. The project also needed high-resolution graphics for VR development at 60 frames per second, and used 3D scanning to create realistic characters. These were project-specific development claims, not a promise that every RE ENGINE game or platform runs at those settings.
Ishida also reported that the RE ENGINE workflow reduced the time needed to test program changes by 90 percent. That figure refers specifically to testing changes in the 2016 RE7 development context; it is not a general measure of how much faster all game development becomes.

- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
How does RE ENGINE shape different Resident Evil games?
The engine provides a shared foundation, but the techniques and design benefits Capcom has described differ by game.
| Game | What Capcom says the engine enabled |
|---|---|
| Resident Evil 7 biohazard (2017) | Photorealistic detail and support for the project’s VR development needs, including high-resolution graphics at 60 frames per second. Capcom developer interview, 2016. |
| Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake) | Producer Tsuyoshi Kanda said the engine enabled greater three-dimensionality and detail. He pointed to Lickers moving through a 360-degree environment, making encounters less constrained than the original game’s floor-bound combat. Capcom interview, 2018. |
| Resident Evil Requiem | Capcom describes the game as using path tracing and strand hair. These title-specific techniques are not established as universal RE ENGINE features across every game or platform. Capcom’s 2025 Online Integrated Report. |
Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth main-series entry, was developed with RE ENGINE and released February 27, 2026, according to Capcom’s announcement. Capcom reported more than five million worldwide units sold by March 4, 2026; that is a sales milestone, not an engine-performance measure. Capcom sales announcement.

The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.

What do light probes, ray tracing and path tracing do?
Capcom’s 2025 report describes three lighting approaches supported by RE ENGINE. They involve different trade-offs in visual detail and computing cost; the presence of a technique in the engine does not establish that every game or platform uses it.
- Light probes: Pre-calculated lighting with comparatively low processing cost. Capcom notes that quality can suffer for dynamic objects or changing light sources.
- Ray tracing: Calculates direct light and some reflections in real time, including in dynamic spaces. It costs more processing power than light probes.
- Path tracing: Statistically follows light paths through a scene to represent complex indirect lighting, reflections and refraction. It requires substantially more computation than ray tracing.
Capcom says Requiem uses path tracing to render multiple shadows from fluctuating light sources. It also describes strand hair, which treats hair as individual strands that respond to facial expression and character movement. What a player sees depends on the game’s implementation, platform and settings; Capcom’s description does not establish identical features or results across hardware.

Why does Capcom maintain its own engine?
Capcom’s stated rationale combines creative control with production needs: a toolset shaped for its workflows, shared technology and assets, and the ability to adapt tools to a particular title. The company describes engine developers as working directly with game teams to gather requests and implement agreed features.

Capcom’s 2025 report counted approximately 200 engineers in its R&D Foundational Technology Department, around 160 of them working on engine development. This is the staffing figure reported for that period, not a permanent headcount.

- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Capcom is also developing REX, a next-generation engine project. The company says it plans to evolve technology incrementally, allowing new and existing technology to coexist and adjusting it for compatible platforms rather than replacing RE ENGINE all at once. Capcom’s report gives no REX release date.
Which Resident Evil games use RE ENGINE?
The documented examples here are Resident Evil 7 biohazard, the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake and Resident Evil Requiem. Capcom’s 2025 report says the engine is used across its broader catalog, so it is not exclusive to Resident Evil. The examples above illustrate what Capcom has specifically attributed to those titles; they are not a complete list of every game using the engine.
