Brooks GuideRails is a structured-support system built into some running shoes. Firmer pieces around the heel are designed to limit excess inward or outward movement while allowing a runner’s natural motion. Brooks labels shoes with this system “GTS.” It may be worth trying if you prefer structured support, but the feature is not a diagnosis or a proven guarantee against injury.
What Brooks GuideRails does
GuideRails uses shoe components around the heel rather than external bars. The medial, or inside, piece is intended to limit inward rolling; the firmer, higher lateral, or outside, piece is intended to limit outward heel shift. Brooks describes the goal as checking excess movement while allowing a runner’s own movement path: “Our GuideRails™ Technology System helps keep excess movement in check.” That is Brooks’ description of the design, not proof of a health outcome. Who might consider a GTS shoe
Brooks positions GuideRails for runners whose movement deviates from their personal baseline; it recommends neutral shoes for runners whose movement aligns with that baseline. If you prefer a more structured feel, you could try a GTS model alongside a neutral shoe and compare fit and comfort. This is a way to evaluate footwear preference, not a diagnosis based on foot shape or a promise of benefit.
Flat feet, a particular pain, or one observation of pronation does not by itself establish that GuideRails is the right choice. Brooks offers a runner-support service for help choosing a support category. Its support guidance also names Glycerin GTS, Adrenaline GTS, and Ariel/Beast GTS as structured-support options on a page discussing plantar-fasciitis discomfort; those are footwear suggestions, not evidence that the shoes treat plantar fasciitis. What GTS means—and what it does not
GTS stands for GuideRails Technology System and appears in the names of Brooks shoes that include the feature. GTX is different: it refers to GORE-TEX waterproof technology, not GuideRails. Brooks’ explanation of GTS and GTX
GuideRails is structured support, not arch support. Brooks says performance running shoes typically do not have active arch shaping; runners seeking personalized arch support can consider a removable orthotic or insert. Brooks describes its support categories as flexible, balanced, structured, and max support, intended to describe how a shoe supports natural movement rather than to prescribe a shoe based on arch shape. What the injury evidence can—and cannot—tell you
There is no direct GuideRails-specific independent clinical outcome established in the sources cited here. Research on broader shoe categories is context, not a test of Brooks’ branded system.

A 2022 Cochrane review included 12 studies and 11,240 participants across its footwear comparisons. It judged the evidence very uncertain on whether stability or motion-control shoes reduce lower-limb running injuries compared with neutral or cushioned shoes. A 2021 secondary analysis of a randomized trial followed 372 recreational runners for six months. It recorded 25 pronation-related injuries and 68 other running-related injuries. For motion-control versus standard neutral shoes, the analysis estimated a lower hazard of pronation-related injury (hazard ratio 0.41; 95% confidence interval 0.17–0.98), but no clear effect on other running-related injury risk (hazard ratio 0.68; 95% confidence interval 0.41–1.10). These results concern motion-control shoes generally, not Brooks GuideRails, and do not establish what will happen for an individual runner. Start with whether you want Brooks’ structured-support feel, then compare the actual fit and ride. Consider cushioning, comfort, and whether you plan to run or walk in the shoe. No support category is established as best for every runner, so how a shoe feels on your foot matters more than treating the label as a diagnosis.
