Standard Boom Mat damping sheets are described by their manufacturer as an asphalt-free butyl damping layer with a 4 mil aluminum stiffening skin, adhesive backing and removable release liner. The name also covers other formats—including flexible sheets and liquid coatings—so the material depends on which Boom Mat product you mean.
What the standard Boom Mat sheet is made of
Design Engineering, Inc. (DEI) describes its standard damping sheet as a noise-constraining butyl layer beneath a 4 mil aluminum stiffening top skin. The sheet also has an adhesive backing and a removable plastic release liner. DEI calls the damping layer “asphalt free” and “pure butyl”; those phrases describe the manufacturer’s product, not a complete chemical formula. DEI’s product description explains the construction.

The aluminum is described as a stiffening skin over the damping layer. The release liner protects the adhesive before installation and is removed when the sheet is applied. The adhesive and liner are functional parts of the sheet assembly; they are not evidence that every Boom Mat format uses the same construction.
What the sheet safety data sheet discloses
DEI’s sheet SDS, dated May 21, 2015, describes the product as “Black Butyl mastic extrusion on release carrier.” Its composition section lists approximately 0.58% carbon black, less than 1.5% amorphous silica and less than 2.2% crystalline silica. These are selected SDS disclosures, not a complete proprietary recipe; the listed figures should not be treated as a full accounting of the product. The SDS is available at DEI’s Boom Mat Damping Material SDS.
#1 Best Overall
- Advanced Sound and Vibration Deadening – Boom Mat is engineered to eliminate low-frequency noise and structure-borne vibrations that travel through metal surfaces. Whether you're reducing road noise, engine drone, or panel rattles, Boom Mat delivers a quieter, more comfortable experience by absorbing sound energy before it enters the cabin.
- Premium Multi-Layer Construction – Built with a viscoelastic polymer layer bonded to a rugged aluminum wear surface, Boom Mat combines flexibility with durability. This layered design allows it to perform in a wide range of demanding environments—automotive, industrial, marine, and more—without breaking down or delaminating over time.
- Strong Adhesion in Extreme Conditions – The high-tack adhesive backing is designed to withstand severe temperature swings, from freezing cold to extreme heat. It adheres securely to metal and most surfaces without peeling, bubbling, or sagging—perfect for floors, doors, trunks, roofs, and firewall areas.
- Efficient Coverage, Maximum Impact – Unlike lower-grade damping materials that require 100% coverage, Boom Mat only needs to cover 25–50% of a panel to be effective—saving weight, time, and cost without sacrificing results. Its targeted performance makes it a top choice among professionals and enthusiasts alike.
- Flexible, DIY-Friendly Installation – Boom Mat is easy to trim and shape to fit contours, curves, and tight areas. For best results, use the Boom Mat Blade Lock Knife (sold separately). Install it in doors, floors, trunks, hoods, and overhead panels for a custom soundproofing solution.
Because that sheet SDS is dated 2015, it should not be treated as current safety guidance without checking whether DEI has issued a newer revision. For handling or installation, use current product instructions and safety documentation.
Boom Mat composition depends on the format
Boom Mat is a product family, not one universal mixture. The material descriptions available for its sheets, flexible sheet and liquid products differ:

| Format | What the cited source says | Important scope limit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard damping sheet | Butyl damping layer, 4 mil aluminum stiffening skin, adhesive backing and removable release liner, per DEI. | These are the manufacturer’s construction claims for its damping-sheet product; they are not a complete chemical formula. DEI product page |
| Boom Mat Flex | O’Reilly lists its specific item as 2.5 mm butyl rubber with a clear poly surface. | This is a retailer description for that listed SKU, not a specification for every Boom Mat sheet. O’Reilly listing |
| Spray-On | DEI describes a separate aerosol damping coating for vehicle applications, including hard-to-reach areas. | It is a coating, not the sheet construction. Its manufacturer-listed application and coverage claims are specific to this product. DEI Spray-On page |
| Brush-On Liquid | A safety data sheet dated July 3, 2025 lists quartz at 40% and ethyl acetate at 27% in its disclosed composition table. | These figures describe the Brush-On Liquid SDS disclosure, not the sheet formula. Brush-On Liquid SDS |
The Brush-On figures are ingredient disclosures, not directions for application or a complete safety assessment. Consult the current SDS and product instructions for the specific format you have.

Do not assume all Boom Mat sheets have one thickness. DEI lists its standard product SKU 050200 as 2 mm thick, while Crutchfield lists SKU 050221 as 4 mm thick. Crutchfield’s listing describes the latter as two 12.5-by-24-inch sheets with 4.2 square feet total coverage. The sound dampening material comes in handy size sheets which make it easier in terms of cutting and installation process!
What it is designed to do—and what is not established
DEI says the sheet is intended to address noise, vibration, squeaks and rattles associated with vehicle panels and sources such as roads, stereos and engines. Its product page also describes application to interior surfaces, including vertical and overhead areas. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent performance measurements. The available figures do not establish a general decibel reduction, damping-efficiency result or comparison against other products.
DEI separately makes claims for its Spray-On product: that it can be layered, withstands temperatures up to 300°F, can be top-coated after six hours of drying, is VOC-compliant in all 50 states, and that one 18 oz can covers 20 square feet. These claims apply to Spray-On, not the sheets; check the current can label and instructions for the applicable directions and specifications. DEI’s Spray-On product page is the source for those claims.

How to identify the right material description
- Identify the format. Check whether the item is a damping sheet, Flex sheet, Spray-On aerosol or Brush-On Liquid; do not carry one format’s SDS or composition over to another.
- Find the SKU. Use the product number to verify the sheet thickness, dimensions and coverage for that exact item.
- Check current documentation. Use the manufacturer’s current product instructions and SDS for installation and safety information rather than inferring it from a material description.
