What Is Bluetooth Auracast and How Does It Work?

Bluetooth Auracast lets one transmitter broadcast audio to compatible receivers nearby. Here’s how joining works and how to check device and venue support.

Bluetooth Auracast is a Bluetooth LE Audio feature that lets one transmitter broadcast audio for compatible devices nearby to receive. Instead of creating a separate Bluetooth audio connection for every listener, it sends a shared broadcast: an assistant such as a phone helps you find and select it, and your compatible earbuds, headphones, or hearing device play the audio.

How Auracast works

Auracast uses Bluetooth LE Audio broadcast audio configured through the Public Broadcast Profile. The process has three parts:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. A transmitter broadcasts audio. A phone, television, or public-address system can send a stream and advertise that it is available. The advertisement may include a broadcast name and indicate whether access is open or secured.
  2. An assistant helps you choose a broadcast. A compatible phone, smartwatch, or hearing-aid remote can scan for available broadcasts and show them for selection, much like a list of public Wi-Fi networks.
  3. A receiver plays the stream. After you select a broadcast, the assistant provides the information needed to join. The compatible earbuds, headphones, hearing device, or other receiver takes in and plays the audio; the assistant helps with selection rather than carrying the audio itself. Bluetooth SIG’s Auracast FAQ and its Auracast explainer describe this transmitter-assistant-receiver arrangement.

Because it is a broadcast, one transmitter can serve many in-range receivers without setting up an individual stream for each listener. Bluetooth SIG describes the architecture as allowing an unlimited number of receivers to join one broadcast; that does not guarantee unlimited practical coverage or reliable reception in every room or venue.

What Auracast is useful for

Auracast can support personal listening at home and shared listening in public. Possible venue uses include assistive listening in transit centers, lecture halls, conference centers, and houses of worship; language interpretation; tours; audio at a ticket counter; and listening to a television in an airport, restaurant, or waiting area. These are potential uses, not a guarantee that a particular location has installed Auracast.

Avantree AuraLink - Auracast & Classic Bluetooth Receiver
  • 【FOR Wired Speakers & Traditional Audio Systems】Designed for users who want to add wireless audio to active speakers and audio systems via 3.5mm AUX or RCA, supporting Auracast broadcast for one-to-many playback, as well as classic Bluetooth connections for home stereo and everyday single-speaker use.
  • 【Auracast & Classic Bluetooth Dual Mode】Switch freely between Auracast broadcast reception and classic Bluetooth mode, ensuring compatibility with both next-generation Auracast sources and traditional Bluetooth devices.
  • 【Portable Or Plug-In Speaker Receiver】Use Auralink as a portable receiver with its built-in battery, or keep it plugged in as a stationary audio receiver for home, office, or shared audio setups.
  • 【NOT FOR Passive Speakers】Does not work with speakers that require an external amplifier. Only works with powered speakers or amplified audio systems with AUX & RCA audio input.
  • 【LIMITED In Classic Bluetooth Mode】In classic Bluetooth mode, the receiver connects to one speaker at a time. Multi-speaker playback is available only when using Auracast broadcast.

A venue could also offer several streams at once, such as the main program alongside a translation or audio description. Listeners would select the stream they need if their assistant and receiver support the system’s configuration. The Bluetooth SIG explainer outlines these use cases, while the Hearing Loss Association of America’s Auracast guidance discusses accessibility applications and stream options.

Do your Bluetooth headphones or hearing aids support Auracast?

Check the exact model and, where relevant, its firmware and companion-device requirements. A Bluetooth version number alone does not prove Auracast support. Bluetooth SIG says compatible products need specific Bluetooth Core features introduced in Bluetooth 5.2 as well as support for the Public Broadcast Profile. Manufacturers decide which capabilities to implement, so two devices with the same Bluetooth version may differ.

  • Bridges MFi/ASHA Hearing Aids to Auracast: Enables hearing aids connected to smartphones via MFi (iOS) or ASHA (Android) to access public or personal Auracast broadcasts, such as airport announcements, museum guides or even your own Auracast station, without requiring Auracast-compatible hearing aids.
  • Volume Boost for Clear Audio: Amplifies incoming audio through digital gain, controlled via our dedicated mobile App - Recast (available in both iOS and Google Play Store), ensuring hearing aid users can hear clearly in noisy or low-volume public settings.
  • Universal Smartphone Compatibility: Works with any USB-C or Lightning port smartphone (Lightning to USB-C adapter included)
  • Easy Broadcast Navigation: Features a dedicated button to cycle through up to 3 saved Auracast stations, managed via the Recast app, for quick and simple switching between audio sources like public announcements.
  • Personal Audio with BA210 Transmitter: Pair with the HomeSpot BA210 Auracast transmitter (sold separately) to create a personal broadcast station, streaming music, podcasts, or other audio directly to your hearing aids.
  • Headphones and earbuds: Look for explicit Auracast or LE Audio broadcast support in the manufacturer’s specifications for your exact model.
  • Hearing aids and cochlear implants: Confirm both the hearing device and the method used to discover or join broadcasts are supported. Some users may need a separate receiver and compatible neckloop or headphones if their hearing devices cannot receive Auracast directly.
  • Phones and assistants: Confirm support for the exact phone model and software version. Google’s Android announcement describes support on selected compatible Pixel, Samsung, Xiaomi, and POCO devices, and notes that both the phone and headphones must support LE Audio. That is not a guarantee for every model from those brands.

For hearing-access systems, stream type matters as well as device support. HLAA distinguishes standard-quality streams, designed around speech clarity, low latency, and hearing-device battery efficiency, from higher-quality streams intended for music and entertainment. A transmitter offering only higher-quality audio may not work with hearing devices that require the standard-quality stream. Venues should confirm the required stream is included; users can ask which stream types are available. See HLAA’s Auracast Systems guidance.

Can you add Auracast to an existing TV?

Possibly. Some televisions may need a hardware upgrade, depending on their built-in capabilities and the manufacturer’s choices. An aftermarket Auracast transmitter adapter can add broadcast capability to a TV or another audio source when that source and adapter can be connected appropriately. Before buying an adapter, check its supported inputs and output configuration, and verify that your receiving device can join the broadcast. Bluetooth SIG discusses both hardware limitations and aftermarket adapters in its Auracast FAQ.

How to find an Auracast broadcast in a public place

  1. Check whether your phone or other assistant and your receiving device both support Auracast.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s supported Auracast or broadcast-audio controls on the assistant and scan for nearby broadcasts. The exact menu name and path vary by device.
  3. Select the broadcast identified by the venue, such as a language, room, or program name, then follow the assistant’s prompts to connect your receiver.
  4. If no suitable stream appears, ask staff whether Auracast is available and which stream is intended for hearing devices. A venue may not offer Auracast, or its system may be configured for a different stream type.

Broadcasts can be open or secured. Do not assume that an Auracast stream is private or encrypted: security depends on how the transmitter’s broadcast is configured. Bluetooth SIG’s explainer describes the available broadcast arrangements.

Auracast and existing assistive-listening systems

Auracast is one possible way for a venue to provide assistive listening; its presence alone does not establish that the venue meets applicable legal or technical accessibility standards. HLAA notes that hearing loops, FM, infrared, and Wi-Fi systems may remain in use during adoption. The right option depends on which personal devices can receive the signal, whether the venue supplies a receiver, what installation and operating setup is required, which streams are available, and whether that specific deployment meets applicable standards. HLAA says an international venue standard is expected by late 2027; that is HLAA’s forecast, not a statement that such a standard is already in effect. See HLAA’s guidance.

What to check before relying on Auracast

  • Confirm explicit Auracast support for each device involved; Bluetooth version alone is insufficient.
  • For home use, verify that the audio source can transmit, either natively or through a suitable adapter.
  • For hearing access, confirm that the venue broadcasts the stream type your hearing device requires.
  • In a public venue, ask whether Auracast is actually available and how its broadcasts are named or secured.
  • If your hearing devices cannot receive the broadcast, ask whether a venue-provided receiver or another assistive-listening system is available.
