Depending on the vehicle, a system may help find a suitable space, steer into it, or control speed; the driver may still need to remain in the vehicle and supervise. The label alone does not mean the car parks without a driver.
What automatic vehicle parking means
Automatic vehicle parking describes a family of driver-assistance functions, not one standardized capability. Systems can differ in which parts of parking they handle, how much the driver must do, and when they can operate. NHTSA’s consumer guidance describes vehicle automation and driver-assistance features in general terms and directs drivers to vehicle-specific information for details: NHTSA’s Automated Vehicle Safety guidance.

A narrower technical term, “active park assist,” appears in an NHTSA draft test procedure. That draft describes a system that identifies parking spaces capable of accommodating the vehicle and allows the driver to terminate automated control through manual override. It is draft technical language, not a universal final regulatory definition: NHTSA’s draft Active Park Assist test procedure.

Depending on the vehicle, a parking feature may identify or indicate a space, control steering, or manage acceleration and braking during some or all of the maneuver. These capabilities are not guaranteed by the phrase “automatic parking.” Check the specific vehicle’s documentation to learn which controls the system operates and what the driver must do.

- When the product is working, the sensor emits ultrasonic waves. When encountering an obstacle, the ultrasonic waves are reflected. The sensor receives the reflected signal and transmits it to the control box. Through calculation, the control box obtains the distance between the vehicle and the obstacle, and reminds the driver to pay attention through the display and sound, etc., to avoid danger. It is a good helper for us to drive the car!
- 1: When reversing, activate the rear 4 sensors and the front 2 sensors to detect and alarm. During normal driving, when braking, the 4 sensors in front of the car are activated to assist the driver to safely pass through narrow passages. When you release the brake, the parking sensor will work for about 15 seconds before stopping.
- 2: The product alerts the driver through sound, numbers, and light bars at the same time.
- 3: Probe behind the car to prevent collision, probe in front of the car to prevent rubbing.
- 4: On the display, there are 8 light bars representing each sensor, allowing the driver to distinguish the orientation of obstacles.
For a meaningful comparison between two vehicles, check their documented features and limits rather than relying on the name alone:
- Whether the system detects or selects a suitable space.
- Whether it controls steering, acceleration, braking, or only some of them.
- Whether the driver must stay in the vehicle and supervise.
- How the driver can pause, cancel, or override the maneuver.
- Which operating conditions and limitations the manufacturer specifies.
Automatic parking is not the same as driverless parking
Some parking assistants automate part of a maneuver while the driver remains present and responsible. Automated valet parking is a distinct concept: the driver exits before the vehicle proceeds to park. A system described as “self-parking” should not be assumed to let the driver leave. NHTSA’s 2014 human-factors report discusses automated driving concepts, including the distinction between driver involvement and automation: NHTSA’s report on Level 2 and Level 3 automated driving concepts.

- Automatically detects obstacles behind the car when reversing, automatically turns on and on.
Automatic parking is not rear automatic braking
Rear automatic braking detects an obstacle behind a vehicle and applies the brakes to help avoid or reduce a collision. It may use information from a rear camera or parking sensors, but detecting an obstacle and braking is different from maneuvering the vehicle into a parking space. NHTSA explains driver-assistance technologies, including automatic emergency braking features, in its Driver Assistance Technologies guidance.
Do not infer an SAE automation level from the name
SAE J3016 provides a taxonomy of driving automation, with six levels, for systems that perform part or all of the dynamic driving task on a sustained basis. It also distinguishes those systems from certain interventions that occur only momentarily. The phrase “automatic parking” does not, by itself, establish a particular SAE level. The linked J3016 page identifies the 2021 edition and indicates a September 2026 revision: SAE J3016 taxonomy and definitions.

How to find out what your vehicle can do
- Look up “parking assist,” “active park assist,” or the system’s named feature in the vehicle’s owner’s manual.
- Read which parts of the maneuver the system controls and whether you must operate pedals or remain ready to intervene.
- Check the manual for operating conditions, limitations, and the steps to cancel or override the feature.
- Follow the vehicle’s instructions while using the system; do not assume the feature replaces driver attention.
Names and behavior vary by vehicle, so the owner’s manual is the reliable source for a particular model’s instructions and safety limits. NHTSA also advises consulting vehicle-specific guidance in its driver-assistance technology information.
