Apple Pro Display XDR is a 32-inch 6K professional LCD display introduced in 2019. It is designed for demanding video, photography, color-grading, visual-effects, 3D-animation, and game-development workflows. Its defining specifications include a 6016-by-3384 resolution, 576 local-dimming zones, P3 wide color, 10-bit color depth, and reference modes for different media standards.
What kind of display is Pro Display XDR?
Pro Display XDR is a standalone monitor, not an all-in-one Mac. Apple describes it as a high-grade reference monitor for professional work. That is the product’s intended positioning, not a guarantee that it is the right choice for every user or workflow. Apple Developer discusses workflows including video editing, photography, color grading, visual effects, 3D animation, and game development.

Apple’s specifications identify it as a 32-inch diagonal IPS LCD with oxide TFT technology. The 16:9 panel has 6016-by-3384 resolution, about 20.4 million pixels, and a pixel density of 218 pixels per inch. Apple introduced the display in 2019. Apple’s technical specifications list these figures.

Apple uses Extreme Dynamic Range (XDR) to describe brightness and contrast that exceed what it considers standard dynamic range (SDR) and high dynamic range (HDR). The display’s brightness figures refer to different conditions: Apple rates it for 1,000 nits sustained across the full screen and up to 1,600 nits peak for HDR content. Its stated contrast ratio is 1,000,000:1. These are Apple-published specifications, not independent lab measurements. Apple’s XDR explanation describes the term.

- PIXEL SHARPENER — A 27-inch 5K Retina XDR display takes brightness, color, and responsiveness to the next level.* Combined with an advanced camera, three-mic array, six-speaker sound, and powerful Thunderbolt 5 capabilities, it’s the ultimate display for pros.
- NOTHING SHORT OF BRILLIANT — Mini-LED backlighting with 2304 dimming zones reduces halo and blooming. Up to 1000 nits SDR brightness means you can work more easily in bright light. And 2000 nits peak HDR brightness brings greater contrast to highlights and shadows.*
- EVEN WIDER COLOR GAMUT — With access to both P3 and Adobe RGB color spaces, P3 + Adobe RGB delivers precision from screen to print. And there are a wide range of reference modes for filmmakers, photographers, and graphic designers.
- ULTRA-SMOOTH MOTION — 120Hz refresh rate makes motion smoother. Adaptive Sync allows for varying frame rates with precision control, ensuring motion remains as responsive as possible.
- PACKED WITH POWER, AND PORTS — Two Thunderbolt 5 ports for high-speed accessories, fast-charging Mac laptops, or daisy-chaining a second Studio Display XDR for 29 million pixels of total screen space. And two USB-C ports are perfect for USB peripherals or charging your iPhone.
Its backlight uses 576 full-array local-dimming zones. Apple pairs that system with an Apple-designed timing controller and dual ambient-light sensors for True Tone. The panel supports P3 wide color and 10-bit color depth, which Apple says can display 1.073 billion colors. Apple’s specifications and its 2020 Pro Display XDR technology overview describe these design features.
What are the reference modes for?
Reference modes set color, brightness, gamma, and white point to suit different media standards and workflows. Apple says the modes are factory calibrated; professionals whose workflow depends on a specific calibration instrument can recalibrate the display. Apple’s support guidance explains the modes and calibration.

Apple’s guidance on the intended use of HDR Video and the P3-1,600-nit mode is available in its reference-mode documentation.
What do you need to set it up?
The display is offered with standard glass or nano-texture glass. The Pro Stand and VESA Mount Adapter are sold separately, so the display itself does not include either mounting option. Apple lists supported refresh rates of 47.95, 48, 50, 59.94, and 60 Hz. Apple’s technical specifications provide these details.

Apple specifies macOS Catalina 10.15.2 or later for features including reference-mode selection, brightness control, True Tone, and user calibration. That requirement is not a complete compatibility matrix: check Apple’s current guidance for the specific Mac and connection you plan to use before buying or setting up the display.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Pro Display XDR the same as Studio Display XDR?
No. They are distinct displays. Pro Display XDR is the 32-inch 6K model with 576 dimming zones and up to 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness. Apple’s current lineup page describes Studio Display XDR as a 27-inch 5K display with a 120Hz refresh rate, Adaptive Sync, mini-LED backlighting with 2,304 dimming zones, up to 1,000 nits SDR brightness and 2,000 nits peak HDR brightness, plus P3 and Adobe RGB color. Those Studio Display XDR specifications do not apply to Pro Display XDR. See Apple’s display overview for the separate product details.
