Apple calls this approach spatial computing; “mixed reality” is descriptive, not the name Apple uses for a formal product category.
What is Apple mixed reality?
In practical terms, it is a way to use digital content in relation to the space around you rather than only on a phone, computer, or television screen. With Vision Pro, apps and other content can appear in the room, while immersive experiences can take over more or all of the view. Apple’s product documentation describes the platform as spatial computing, so that is the most precise term when referring to Apple’s own terminology. Apple Vision Pro User Guide

How do Vision Pro and visionOS fit together?
Apple Vision Pro is the headset, or spatial computer. visionOS is the operating system that provides its interface and supports spatial apps. The terms are related but not interchangeable: the device is the hardware, and visionOS is the software experience that runs on it. Apple’s June 2023 Vision Pro announcement

visionOS supports different degrees of immersion rather than one fixed presentation. Apple Developer materials describe apps moving from familiar windows to 3D content and then into a dedicated Full Space. Apple Developer: visionOS

Shared Space: apps alongside your surroundings
In a Shared Space, app windows and 3D volumes can coexist side by side. Users can reposition them while continuing to see their physical surroundings. This is the clearest example of the “mixed” part of mixed reality: digital items are present in the same view as the room.
Full Space: an app takes the lead
In a Full Space, an app can show windows and volumes, unbounded 3D content, a portal into another world, or a fully immersive environment. The experience can therefore move from blending digital objects with the room to largely or fully immersing the user in digital content. Not every Vision Pro session is equally immersive.

How do people interact with Apple’s spatial interface?
Apple identifies eyes, hands, and voice as the main ways people navigate Vision Pro. The interface responds to where a user looks and to hand gestures or spoken commands. In its June 2023 announcement, Apple also said the interface responds dynamically to natural light and casts shadows to help users perceive scale and distance; those are Apple’s descriptions of the system, not independent performance measurements. What else does Apple’s spatial-computing platform include?
Spatial computing is broader than placing floating app windows in view. Apple’s platform descriptions also include spatial audio, immersive environments, and spatial media. These are capabilities within the experience, not separate definitions of mixed reality.

For example, Apple’s June 9, 2025 announcement of visionOS 26 described spatial widgets anchored in a user’s space, spatial scenes that add depth to photos, shared spatial experiences, support for 180-degree, 360-degree, and wide-field-of-view video from named camera makers, and support for PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers. These examples were announced as visionOS 26 features; compatibility and availability can depend on the software release, device, and content. Apple’s visionOS 26 announcement
Is “mixed reality” Apple’s official name for it?
No. In the Apple sources cited here, Apple uses “spatial computing” for the platform and describes Vision Pro as a spatial computer. “Mixed reality” remains a convenient general description of experiences that combine digital content with a view of the physical environment, but it should not be presented as Apple’s formal category name. The term also does not imply that every experience keeps the real room visible: visionOS includes both Shared Space and fully immersive options.

What do Apple’s headline display figures mean?
In its June 5, 2023 Vision Pro announcement, Apple reported 23 million pixels across the headset’s two displays and said its R1 chip streams new images to the displays in 12 milliseconds. These are Apple’s dated device-specification claims, not general measurements of mixed reality or independent tests of every user’s experience. Apple’s June 2023 Vision Pro announcement
