Android Recovery Mode is a startup menu for recovery actions when the usual Android interface is unavailable. How you open it depends on your phone’s make and model; use the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact device. The menu can offer a simple restart, but choosing “Wipe data/factory reset” erases data, so treat it as a last resort.
What is Android recovery mode?
Recovery Mode is a menu reached during startup, outside Android’s normal home screen and Settings. It can provide options for restarting or troubleshooting a phone that will not start normally. The available choices differ across devices and software versions, so do not assume that an option shown in a guide will appear on your phone.

Android also checks at startup whether system software comes from a trusted source and has not been changed or corrupted. Google warns that intentionally changed software can malfunction and put data or device security at risk; if you see an unexpected warning about the operating system, contact support for your device rather than trying unofficial firmware or bypasses. Google’s Android safety guidance explains these checks.

There is no universal button combination. Check the current support instructions for your exact phone model before starting; Samsung, for example, notes that its recovery key combinations vary by device. Samsung’s recovery guidance is model-specific. Motorola also publishes steps for its own devices: Motorola device reset instructions.

As one general example, Android.com describes turning the phone off, holding Volume Down and Power for about 10–15 seconds, selecting Recovery Mode from the boot menu, then using Power and Volume Up to reveal options if “No command” appears. This is an example, not a procedure that applies to every Android phone. Follow the steps for your model, including any instructions for a “No command” screen. Android.com’s reset guide describes its example and directs users to manufacturer instructions for device-specific steps.
How do I use the recovery menu?
Read the screen before selecting anything. In Android.com’s example menu, the volume buttons move between items and Power selects one; controls and options can differ on other phones. If you are uncertain what an item does, do not select it—check your model’s manufacturer guide.

How do I get out of Android recovery mode?
If you entered Recovery Mode by mistake, choose “Reboot system now” if it appears and your device’s instructions identify it as the restart option. Use the model-specific button controls shown on screen or in the manufacturer guide. Avoid selecting “Wipe data/factory reset” just to leave the menu.

If the phone does not restart or remains stuck, do not assume another device’s button sequence will work. Motorola’s guide, for its described device, says to hold Power until the screen turns dark, release it, and allow the phone to power up if rebooting does not finish. Check your manufacturer’s instructions before trying a fallback like this.
Will recovery mode erase everything?
Simply entering Recovery Mode does not itself mean you have erased data. But choosing and confirming “Wipe data/factory reset” does: Google states that a factory reset erases all data from the phone. Data stored in your Google Account may be restored afterward, but apps and their app data are uninstalled. The reset option is an explicit menu selection and confirmation in Android.com’s example; never choose it casually. Google’s factory-reset guidance explains the impact.

Before you confirm a factory reset
Google recommends trying other ways to fix the problem first. If you decide a reset is necessary, prepare before selecting the erase option:

- If you recently changed your Google Account password, Google advises waiting 24 hours before resetting.

Should I restart, use Recovery Mode, or factory-reset?
| Option | When it may help | Does it erase data? | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary restart and troubleshooting | The phone responds enough to use its interface, or you are checking a freeze or app problem. | No, not by itself. | Google suggests restarting a frozen phone by holding Power for about 30 seconds, then checking system updates, storage, and app problems. Google’s frozen-phone troubleshooting has the steps. |
| Recovery Mode: “Reboot system now” | The normal interface is unavailable but the recovery menu can be reached. | Not through this restart choice in Android.com’s example. | Use your device’s own entry and navigation instructions; menus vary by model. |
| Recovery Mode: factory reset | Other fixes have failed and you are prepared to erase the phone. | Yes. Google says a factory reset erases all data from the phone. | Back up first and confirm account and screen-lock credentials before proceeding. |
What to try if your Android phone is frozen, blank, or will not turn on
If the screen is frozen
Google suggests holding Power for about 30 seconds to restart a phone that is not responding. If it comes back on, check for Android updates, review available storage, and investigate recently problematic apps before considering a reset. Google notes that a phone may begin having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free; this is a support troubleshooting threshold, not a statistic about all phones. Google’s frozen-phone help covers these checks.
If the screen is blank or the phone will not power on
First check whether the phone is actually receiving power: inspect the power button, charger, cable, outlet, and charging port, and consider whether the phone may be on with a blank display. Google’s hardware-button troubleshooting is for diagnosing power problems; it should not be treated as a universal Recovery Mode entry method. Follow Google’s power and blank-screen troubleshooting and your manufacturer’s device-specific guidance.
If it remains stuck or the menu looks different
Recovery procedures can vary by model, software build, and region. If the phone stays stuck, its menu does not match the instructions, or the operating system has been customized, ask the device manufacturer or carrier for help rather than guessing at unfamiliar menu options.
