Analog component video sends picture information over separate signal paths instead of combining it into one waveform. Its common forms are RGB, which carries red, green, and blue separately, and YPbPr, which carries luma plus two color-difference signals. In consumer connections, “component video” often means YPbPr, but the term can also describe RGB.
What does “component video” mean?
“Component” describes how a video picture is represented: its information is divided among multiple signals. Analog Devices describes a three-wire component interface carrying either RGB or luma with two color-difference signals. The term describes the signal arrangement, not a particular plug shape or a guarantee that two devices will work together.

How do YPbPr and RGB differ?
YPbPr
YPbPr is an analog component format. Y carries luma—the picture’s brightness information—while Pb and Pr carry scaled blue-minus-Y and red-minus-Y color-difference information. This is why a YPbPr connection uses separate Y, Pb, and Pr signal paths.
RGB
RGB carries red, green, and blue signals separately. It is also a component form, but it is not the same signal format as YPbPr. A device’s RGB output should not be assumed to work with YPbPr inputs without compatible conversion equipment.

- This cable includes conductors for each of the three component video channels.
- The connector housings have color-coded knurled rubber rings for easy identification and a perfect grip when installing or removing the cable.
- The video conductors in this cable are made from RG-59 coaxial cable, with 22AWG cores.
- The connectors are gold plated to ensure smooth, corrosion-free connections.
Is YPbPr analog or digital?
YPbPr is analog. YCbCr is a related digital component-video format, not another name for the same interface. Microsoft Learn identifies Y′PbPr with analog component video, and Texas Instruments distinguishes it from digital YCbCr in documentation for its TVP5146 video decoder. That decoder’s support for particular component modes is specific to that product; it does not establish what every component-video device accepts.
How is component video different from composite video?
Component video carries picture information on separate signals. Composite video combines luma, chroma, the color-reference burst, and synchronization into one waveform. The difference is how the signal is organized; it does not, by itself, prove that one connection will produce better results in every setup. The equipment and signal path matter.

What cable do you need for YPbPr component video?
Use a compatible three-channel component video cable for the separate Y, Pb, and Pr paths. Before connecting anything, confirm that the source has Y/Pb/Pr outputs and the display has compatible Y/Pb/Pr inputs; follow the labels and manuals for both devices. Plug colors alone do not establish that the signal formats are compatible.

- Connect each output to the corresponding input: Y to Y, Pb to Pb, and Pr to Pr.
- Confirm that both devices support the same scan mode and timing. The term “component video” alone does not tell you which modes a particular pair of devices supports.
Do not treat an RGB output or digital YCbCr connection as a direct substitute for analog YPbPr. If the formats differ, check whether the devices support the same format or whether an active converter is required.

- cable: Component
- compatible devices: DVD Player
What should you verify before connecting devices?
- Signal format: Check whether each device uses YPbPr, RGB, composite, or digital YCbCr.
- Supported modes: Check scan modes and timings in both manuals; compatibility is model-specific.
- Connectors and sync: Confirm that the connector and synchronization arrangements match the devices’ requirements.
- Conversion: Determine whether a format mismatch requires an active conversion device.
Analog Devices’ Video Basics explains the component and composite signal arrangements. Microsoft Learn’s About YUV Video describes Y′PbPr in analog video, while Texas Instruments’ TVP5146 FAQ distinguishes YPbPr from YCbCr and lists support for that specific decoder.
