It typically provides a short-term bridge through an outage or enough time to shut equipment down safely. Depending on its design, it may also regulate voltage or condition power.
What does “uninterruptible power supply” mean?
The U.S. Department of Energy reproduces the definition in 10 CFR 430 Appendix Y 2.27: “Uninterruptible power supplies or UPSs are battery chargers consisting of a combination of convertors, switches and energy storage devices (such as batteries), constituting a power system for maintaining continuity of load power in case of input power failure.” The spelling “convertors” is the spelling in the regulation. DOE’s UPS page covers the UPS subset of battery chargers regulated in the United States.

In everyday terms, a UPS sits between a power source and devices that need power. When input power is lost or falls outside the unit’s operating range, the UPS uses stored energy to continue supplying its connected load. Backup time is limited and varies with the UPS model, battery condition and connected load; the term does not promise a particular runtime.
How does a UPS work?
Converters and switching components manage the flow of power between the input supply, energy storage and connected equipment. The way those components are arranged is called the UPS topology. It determines how the unit handles ordinary power and what it does when input power has a problem.

UPS functions differ by model. Some systems mainly provide battery backup; others also correct voltage variations or continuously convert power before supplying it to the load. Check the product’s specifications for its actual regulation, output waveform, transfer behavior, efficiency and runtime rather than assuming those details from its category name.
What are the three common UPS types?
| Type | During normal input power | When input power has a problem | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standby (offline) | Utility power normally passes through the unit. | The UPS switches the load to battery after detecting a problem. | Basic home or small-office loads, including desktop and network equipment. |
| Line-interactive | Power passes through voltage-regulation circuitry. | The unit can correct some high or low voltage without using the battery; the battery takes over when conditions exceed its operating range. | Workstations and office networks where voltage fluctuates but utility power is otherwise relatively clean. |
| Online double-conversion | Incoming AC is converted to DC and then back to AC; an inverter supplies the load. | Because the inverter already supplies the load, Eaton describes zero transfer time to battery. | Sensitive or mission-critical equipment, such as data-center or server-room equipment, and sites with unreliable power. |
These are broad descriptions, not guarantees that every model in a category has identical capabilities. Compare the individual unit’s specifications when transfer behavior, output quality or runtime is critical. Eaton’s UPS fundamentals guide and its UPS types overview describe these topologies and their typical applications.

How do you choose a UPS for your equipment?
Start with the equipment that must remain powered and the job the UPS needs to do. The important decision is not simply whether a UPS is present, but whether its capacity, runtime and power-handling characteristics match the load and the outage you need to bridge.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors1. List the connected equipment and its power needs
Identify every device that should stay on, then determine its actual power draw and VA requirement. Size the UPS for the combined load, with suitable headroom for planned growth. Do not assume that a unit’s advertised capacity alone establishes how long it will run your devices.

2. Decide how much runtime you need
Be specific about whether the goal is to ride through brief interruptions, keep a router or computer running temporarily, or allow time for an orderly shutdown. Runtime changes with both battery capacity and load. Use the manufacturer’s runtime chart or calculator for the exact model and your expected load; without those details, a fixed runtime estimate is not reliable.
3. Match the topology to power quality and equipment sensitivity
A standby UPS may suit straightforward backup needs. A line-interactive model adds voltage regulation, useful where high or low input voltage is a concern. Online double-conversion may be appropriate when continuous conversion and power continuity matter for sensitive or critical equipment. Greater conditioning is not automatically better for every application.

4. Check the installation requirements
Confirm the input and outlet requirements, available space, ventilation and form factor. Check whether you need a tower or rack-mount unit and whether the installation calls for single-phase or three-phase power. Vertiv describes single-phase systems as common in household and light-commercial settings, while three-phase systems serve larger, power-hungry facilities. Vertiv’s selection guide discusses these considerations.
5. Consider efficiency, maintenance and expansion
Check the manufacturer’s instructions for battery and capacitor maintenance, and consider the UPS’s efficiency across the load range you expect to use. The U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) advises buyers to consider equipment type, capacity and count, conditioning level, redundancy and required outage uptime. Its guidance is aimed at a stated product scope and should not be generalized to every industrial, mobile or embedded UPS.

FEMP’s December 2024 guidance says higher levels of power conditioning generally result in lower UPS system efficiency: VFD provides the most basic conditioning, VI falls between, and VFI provides the highest. These are useful trade-offs to consider, not a rule that one topology is best for every buyer. Read the FEMP purchasing guidance for its scope and recommendations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a UPS the same as a generator?
No. A UPS is generally the immediate, short-term bridge when input power fails. A generator or another backup supply can be paired with a UPS when power is needed for longer outages. Whether a particular arrangement can sustain a load depends on the equipment and system specifications; do not assume a UPS alone will run a device for a given duration.
What are the U.S. UPS efficiency rules?
For UPS products covered by the U.S. conservation standard, DOE points to requirements in 10 CFR 430.32(z)(3) and test methods in 10 CFR 430, Subpart B, Appendix Y. DOE lists its UPS test-procedure final rule as published April 19, 2024, effective July 3, 2024, with amendments mandatory for product testing beginning October 16, 2024. These are U.S. regulatory details; consult the current regulation for compliance decisions.
