What Is an SSD Write Cycle? Definition and Meaning

An SSD write cycle is a NAND program/erase cycle, not one file save or host write. See how pages, erase blocks and TBW ratings fit together.

An SSD write cycle is a NAND flash program/erase (P/E) cycle: data is programmed to one or more pages in an erase block, and that block is erased so it can be reused. The erase happens at block level, so an individual file save is not one full write cycle across the entire drive.

What an SSD write cycle means

JEDEC defines a P/E cycle as “the writing of data to one or more pages in an erase block and the erasure of that block, in either order.” In plain language, NAND flash cells that have been written must be erased before they can be written again. Repeated programming and erasing gradually wears the flash memory. JEDEC JESD218 and SanDisk’s SSD endurance explanation describe this process.

How pages and erase blocks fit together

  • Program: Data is written to NAND in pages, which can be programmed individually.
  • Erase: NAND is erased in blocks containing multiple pages; a page cannot simply be overwritten in place without the relevant erase operation.
  • P/E cycle: Programming one or more pages and erasing the erase block are the operations counted as a cycle.

Because programming and erasing use different units, a host write does not map neatly to one P/E cycle on every cell. The SSD controller manages data placement and reuse inside the drive.

How write cycles differ from host writes and TBW

A host write is data sent by the computer to the SSD. The drive may write more data internally to NAND than the host sent; JEDEC calls the ratio of NAND data written to host data written the write amplification factor (WAF). Its value depends on workload and can change over the SSD’s lifetime. Wear leveling spreads P/E cycles across physical memory locations, including when writes are unevenly distributed across the logical drive. JEDEC JESD218 defines these terms.

  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

TBW, or terabytes written, is a drive-level endurance rating: the amount of data that may be written while the SSD meets applicable requirements. It is not a raw count of NAND cell cycles. The rating depends on factors such as NAND cycling capability, wear-leveling implementation, write amplification, and the workload used to characterize the drive. JEDEC and Kioxia’s TBW and NAND endurance overview explain that ratings may use a defined JEDEC workload or a vendor-specific workload.

What the definition says about SSD lifespan

There is no single P/E-cycle count that applies to every SSD. NAND capability, drive design, workload, write amplification, and wear leveling all affect how NAND cycling relates to host writes and usable drive life. Use a specific model’s published endurance rating and its stated workload context rather than converting a generic cycle count into a lifespan estimate.

Sandisk 1TB Portable SSD, Up to 800MB/s Read Speeds, Black (Old Model)
  • Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
  • Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
  • Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

A TBW rating is not a promise that a drive will fail the moment it reaches that number. It describes rated endurance under applicable requirements; it should not be read as an exact failure date or a prediction for every workload.
