An RBI variable rate reverse repo (VRRR) auction is a short-term liquidity operation in which eligible participants place funds with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) at rates they offer. The RBI uses it to absorb surplus liquidity for a specified period. The auction notice sets the amount, tenor, bidding window and reversal date; the result shows how much was accepted and at what rates.
What “variable rate reverse repo” means
In a reverse repo, funds move from participants to the RBI. The RBI holds that liquidity for the operation’s tenor and returns it on the specified reversal date. This is the opposite direction from a variable-rate repo, which injects liquidity to participants. The RBI describes VRRR mechanics as opposite to variable-rate repo mechanics in its Liquidity Management Framework.

“Variable rate” means participants offer rates in the auction and the RBI determines a cut-off rate from the offers. It is not simply the standing fixed reverse-repo rate. The RBI’s framework says reverse-repo offers at or above the prevailing repo rate are not accepted. The reviewed framework does not establish one universal bid-ordering or tie-allocation rule for every VRRR auction, so those details should not be assumed.
How a VRRR auction works
- The RBI announces an operation. Based on its assessment of system liquidity, the RBI decides whether to conduct an auction and specifies its amount, tenor, timing and other terms. Its assessment can take account of known flows such as reversals of outstanding RBI operations, government-security redemptions, coupon payments and government transactions, as well as less certain factors such as reserve demand, currency in circulation and government expenditure.
- Eligible participants submit offers. The RBI’s framework describes electronic submission through its Core Banking System, e-Kuber. The auction notice and applicable operational guidelines govern eligibility, the submission window and any transaction-specific conditions.
- The RBI determines and publishes the result. The result notice reports the outcome, including the accepted amount and rates. Offers received show demand; the amount accepted shows how much liquidity the RBI actually absorbed.
- The first leg settles and the funds are later returned. The RBI’s 2025 report says the first leg settles on the same day within an hour of the auction-result announcement, with reversal at the beginning of the second-leg day. The individual auction notice sets the scheduled reversal date and any permitted early-reversal procedure.
For example, a notice dated September 10, 2026 announced a 26-day VRRR auction of ₹5,00,000 crore for September 11, with a 9:30–10:00 AM bidding window and reversal scheduled for October 7. It also set out a procedure for premature reversal requests. This was the announced schedule and amount for that particular operation—not evidence of the amount ultimately accepted or a standing auction schedule. See the RBI’s September 10, 2026 VRRR notice.

How to read the result notice
Compare the auction’s notified amount with offers received and the amount accepted. Then distinguish the cut-off rate from the weighted-average rate: the cut-off is the marginal rate determined by the auction, while the weighted average describes accepted offers overall. A result may also state whether there was partial acceptance at the cut-off. Read these fields alongside the auction date and tenor, rather than treating a rate or amount as a general measure of current conditions.
For a historical illustration, the RBI’s result notice for the 3-day auction held January 25, 2022 reported ₹2,00,000 crore notified, ₹73,975 crore offered and accepted, and a cut-off and weighted-average rate of 3.99%. These figures show how the fields appear in a result; they are not current rates or current market conditions. The January 25, 2022 result notice also includes the auction’s other published details.
Why the RBI uses VRRR auctions
The RBI uses liquidity operations to manage short-term surplus or deficit conditions and help align the weighted average call rate with the policy repo rate. A VRRR auction gives participants a route to place funds with the RBI, allowing it to absorb liquidity for the operation’s tenor and influence short-term money-market conditions.

In its October 2021 statement, the RBI said that “the VRRR auctions are primarily a tool for rebalancing liquidity as part of our liquidity management operations and should not be interpreted as a reversal of the accommodative policy stance.” That statement describes the RBI’s position at the time; it is not a new 2026 policy announcement. The RBI determines the timing, amount and tenor of discretionary liquidity operations according to its liquidity assessment; those terms are not permanent features of VRRR. The 14-day VRRR was described as the main liquidity-management operation when the RBI announced restoration of its revised framework in February 2022. That announcement also discussed fine-tuning and longer-maturity auctions as conditions warranted. More recent RBI material describes variable-rate reverse repos generally as short-term operations, while the September 2026 notice illustrates that an individual auction can have a longer tenor. See the February 2022 Monetary Policy Statement.
Use the notice for the specific auction you are following: it controls the window, tenor, amount, reversal date and any special options. Do not infer current eligibility or bid limits from older forms meant for fixed-rate overnight reverse repo operations.
