An M4A file is an audio file with the .m4a extension, commonly associated with Apple devices and software. It often contains lossy AAC audio, but it can also contain lossless Apple Lossless (ALAC) audio. The extension alone does not tell you which codec is inside or whether the sound is lossless.
What is an M4A file?
M4A is an audio file type and filename extension. Apple documents .m4a as its M4A audio file type. Microsoft distinguishes M4A/AAC from ALAC profiles and notes that M4A audio is often AAC but may also be Apple Lossless.

That distinction matters because a file extension is not a complete description of the audio encoding. Renaming a file from .m4a to .mp3 does not convert it; it only changes the name, and the renamed file may still fail to open.

Is M4A lossless?
Not necessarily. M4A can contain AAC, which is lossy, or ALAC, which is lossless. You cannot determine which one it contains just from the extension; check the file’s properties or inspect it in an audio application that reports its codec.

AAC is compressed and lossy. Its efficiency compared with MP3 depends on the encoding settings and the audio, so it is not sound to assume that every AAC file will sound better than every MP3 file.
Converting a lossy AAC file to WAV can produce an uncompressed PCM file, but it cannot restore audio information discarded when the AAC file was made. Converting AAC to another lossy format can add another lossy encoding generation. If your M4A contains ALAC, conversion to a lossless format can preserve the decoded audio, subject to the export settings and format chosen.

How do I open an M4A file?
Try the audio player or editor you normally use and check that it supports the codec inside the file. Apple Music and GarageBand are among the Mac applications Apple Support identifies for working with M4A audio. Audacity can import M4A using FFmpeg, but some M4A files may be restricted by DRM to particular software.

- If the file is protected, use software authorized to play it; converting or renaming it may not remove the restriction.
- If the file opens but sounds wrong, check the codec and file integrity rather than assuming the extension identifies the problem.
How do I convert M4A to MP3?
Choose the destination format before converting. If a receiving device, editor, or service specifies a format or audio settings, follow those requirements. If there are no instructions, Audacity describes MP3 as broadly accepted, making it a practical compatibility choice.

On a Mac with Apple Music or GarageBand
Apple Support names Apple Music and GarageBand as Mac applications that can convert M4A to MP3. The precise menu sequence can vary by application and macOS version, so use the current instructions for the installed app rather than relying on a set of clicks that may not match your screen. In either app, select the source audio, choose an MP3 export or conversion option, set the destination and any available quality options, then save the converted file.
With Audacity
- Install FFmpeg if your Audacity installation does not offer M4A import or M4A/AAC export. Audacity documents FFmpeg as an optional dependency for additional formats.
- Open or import the M4A file and confirm that it plays as expected in the project.
- Choose the export option for MP3, set the output filename and destination, and select any available audio settings required by the receiving service or device.
- Export the file, then open or play the MP3 to confirm it was saved in the intended location and is usable.
Audacity’s format guidance gives general example bitrate guidance for speech and music, but those are not universal requirements. Use the target’s instructions first; if none are available, choose a setting appropriate to your content and file-size needs. Avoid repeatedly converting the same audio between lossy formats.

Which format should you choose?

Why might an M4A file fail to convert?
- The converter cannot import M4A: Check the application’s format support. In Audacity, install or configure FFmpeg if needed for M4A import.
- The file is DRM-protected: Audacity notes that some protected audio is limited to particular software. Play or manage it in an authorized application rather than expecting a general-purpose converter to bypass the restriction.
- The file was only renamed: Restore the
.m4aextension and use an actual export or conversion function to create MP3 or another format. - The converted file is too large or too small for the task: Review the export format and its audio settings, then follow any limits set by the destination.
- The output sounds worse: A lossy conversion cannot recover detail already removed from the source, and another lossy encoding can discard more. Keep the original and export again from it if you need a different delivery format.
