An LLM gateway is a software layer between an application and one or more large language model providers. It gives teams a place to forward requests, choose or fail over between configured models, apply runtime checks, and track or limit usage. The name covers different designs: a gateway may be software a team operates in front of its own provider accounts, or a managed service that routes traffic through its network. Features vary by product.

How does an LLM gateway work?

Without a gateway, an application can connect directly to each model provider. With one, the application sends requests to the gateway’s endpoint; the gateway authenticates the caller, applies configured policies, forwards the request to a provider or model, and returns the response. Depending on the product and configuration, it may also record usage, check input or output, retry a failed request, or send it to a fallback.

Some gateways expose a common API or translate requests into provider-specific formats. Others forward requests through a more limited interface. Do not assume every product translates formats, stores provider keys, includes a dashboard, or runs in infrastructure your organization controls. LiteLLM documents a unified API and gateway with virtual keys, budgets, rate limits, and request-cost records; the Cloud Security Alliance describes the proxy pattern as translating requests before forwarding them to providers (LiteLLM documentation; Cloud Security Alliance).

Typical request path

  1. Application: Sends a request to the gateway endpoint, often identifying a model or logical model name.
  2. Gateway: Authenticates the caller and applies the policies enabled for that request.
  3. Routing: Selects a configured provider or model, or forwards to the requested destination.
  4. Provider: Processes the request and returns a response.
  5. Gateway: Returns the response and may record usage, apply response checks, or invoke retry and fallback rules.

The exact sequence and controls depend on the gateway. A gateway is not itself necessarily a model, and adopting one does not guarantee that an application can switch providers without adapting its prompts, parameters, or response handling.

What can an LLM gateway route?

Routing is the policy that determines where a request goes. A gateway can let an application select a model, map a logical name to a backend, distribute requests across configured providers or keys, or retry and fall back after an error. LiteLLM documents retries and fallbacks, as well as an optional task- and cost-oriented auto-router. Portkey documents routing configuration, load balancing, retries, fallbacks, and timeout controls (LiteLLM documentation; Portkey AI Gateway documentation).

These are product-specific capabilities, not properties of every gateway. A fallback can help when a configured provider is unavailable, but the alternate route may have different latency, cost, response characteristics, or data destination. Automatic cost-oriented routing does not establish that a request will get equivalent quality at lower total cost. Define the acceptable providers and models, then evaluate the policy on representative traffic; the cited product pages describe features, not independent benchmarks.

What are LLM gateway guardrails?

Guardrails are runtime checks or controls applied to model inputs, outputs, or both. Depending on the system, they may detect prompt-injection patterns, mask personally identifiable information, filter content, invoke a provider’s moderation or safety feature, enforce custom rules, or constrain dialogue topics and formats. LiteLLM and Portkey document guardrail integrations or input/output checks; the NeMo Guardrails paper describes programmable controls for topics, dialogue paths, styles, and structured extraction (LiteLLM documentation; Portkey AI Gateway documentation; NeMo Guardrails paper).

Ask what a specific check examines, where it runs, and what happens when it flags a request: block it, redact content, route it for review, or allow it with a log entry. A guardrail is not a guarantee of safety, factual accuracy, or regulatory compliance. Checks can miss cases or need tuning, and the consulted sources establish no universal success rate.

Can an LLM gateway reduce costs?

A gateway can improve cost visibility and provide controls, but it does not automatically lower a team’s total bill. Depending on the product, it may record estimated request costs, associate spend with keys or teams, set budgets or rate limits, cache repeat requests, or route eligible work to a lower-priced model. LiteLLM documents cost records, budgets, and rate limits; Portkey documents analytics and caching; these vendor feature descriptions are not independent evidence of savings (LiteLLM documentation; Portkey AI Gateway documentation).

Actual results depend on the workload, provider prices, cache hit rate, routing quality, retries, and the cost of operating or subscribing to the gateway. Before relying on a budget as a hard cap, confirm whether it blocks, throttles, or merely reports usage. Also check how streaming and provider-specific usage are counted, how estimates are attributed, and whether the total includes provider charges, gateway hosting, support, and subscription fees. The cited documentation provides no independent savings statistic.

What operating models do gateways use?

The main distinction is whether the gateway is a customer-operated control plane in front of provider accounts the team already holds, or a managed routing network. OpenRouter describes its service as a managed network using credits and a unified endpoint, contrasting it with a control plane placed in front of customer-held provider credentials; that is the vendor’s own comparison, not an independent evaluation (OpenRouter overview).

What security and operational risks should teams evaluate?

Centralizing provider credentials and request logs can make policy enforcement more consistent, but it also concentrates sensitive assets. A Cloud Security Alliance research note from June 2026 describes CVE-2026-42271 as affecting LiteLLM versions 1.74.2 through 1.83.6 and says the authorized fix required LiteLLM 1.83.7 and Starlette 1.0.1. The note highlights that compromise of a central proxy can expose provider keys, usage logs, and connected infrastructure. This is a dated, product-specific example, not evidence that later versions remain affected or that all gateways share the vulnerability. Check current vendor and authoritative vulnerability advisories before acting on version guidance (Cloud Security Alliance).

  • Credentials: Find out where provider secrets are stored and who can create, use, rotate, or revoke virtual keys.
  • Logs and privacy: Determine whether prompts, responses, or metadata are retained, who can access them, and what can be redacted.
  • Patch management: Establish who updates the gateway and its dependencies, and how security fixes are deployed.
  • Availability: Decide what applications do if the gateway is unavailable, including whether direct provider access is an approved fallback.
  • Recovery and oversight: Check whether the service can be isolated, audited, and restored, and whether its controls fit your governance requirements.

How should you decide whether to adopt one?

A gateway is most useful when the team needs a shared place to govern multiple model connections, apply consistent policies, or understand usage across applications. For a single, stable provider connection, its extra service and operational layer may not be worthwhile. Use these questions to assess fit:

  • Do you need a managed routing network, or a control plane over provider accounts you already operate?
  • Which provider APIs, models, request features, and response formats must work?
  • Are routing, retry, fallback, and timeout rules configurable enough for your reliability requirements?
  • Which input and output checks are available, and what happens when they trigger?
  • Can you attribute usage, enforce budgets or rate limits, and reconcile gateway estimates with provider invoices?
  • What deployment, access-control, retention, patching, and outage responsibilities will your team own?
  • What is the full cost, including provider usage, hosting or subscription, support, and engineering effort?

Do not adopt a gateway on the assumption that it will save money or improve model quality. Start with a specific operational need, verify the current feature set and terms for the deployment you are considering, and measure the effect on representative traffic.
