An iPhone flash drive is a portable external storage device that connects to an iPhone through a compatible Lightning or USB-C port, sometimes using an adapter. It lets you access or copy files between the iPhone and the drive; it does not add capacity to the iPhone’s built-in storage.
What an iPhone flash drive does
It stores files outside the phone and gives you a way to move or access supported files, such as photos, videos, and documents. Apple says the Files app and other supported apps can access files on external devices connected to iPhone. That makes a flash drive useful for transfers or keeping a separate copy of selected files, but it should not be assumed to create an automatic backup of the entire phone.

Despite the name, an “iPhone flash drive” is not a special kind of internal iPhone storage. It is an external drive intended to work with particular iPhone models and software.

Check the connector and exact model
iPhones use either Lightning or USB-C, depending on the model. The drive must connect through the right port, either directly or through a compatible adapter. SanDisk, for example, markets Phone Drive variants with Lightning and USB-C connectors; check compatibility for the exact drive SKU and iPhone model rather than relying on the product category name alone. Apple’s external-storage instructions explain supported connection methods, while SanDisk’s product information distinguishes its connector variants.

For Lightning iPhones, Apple identifies the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter and Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter as possible connections. With a USB-C iPhone, use a compatible USB-C drive or supported adapter. A connector that physically fits is not, by itself, proof that the drive or its companion app will work.
Check the computer-side connector too
If you plan to move files between the drive and a Mac or PC, verify that the drive’s other connector fits that computer, or that you have an appropriate adapter. Some designs provide different connectors at each end.

How to access a connected drive in Files
- Connect the USB drive or an SD card reader to the iPhone charging port, using a compatible connector or adapter.
- Open the Files app and tap Browse.
- Look under Locations and select the drive to view its files.
Apple’s documented Files route works when iPhone recognizes the external storage and the app or file type is supported. Some products also use a manufacturer’s app; the available workflow depends on the drive, connection, and software version. SanDisk’s support information describes app-specific workflows for some of its products, so check the instructions for the model you own rather than assuming every drive will appear in Files. File format and power requirements
Format and partitioning
Apple says an external storage device must have a single data partition and use a supported format: APFS, encrypted APFS, macOS Extended (HFS+), exFAT (FAT64), FAT32, or FAT. If a drive is not recognized, its format or partition layout is one of the things to check against Apple’s requirements.

Power
A compact flash drive may draw power from the phone, but some larger external hard drives need their own power source. Apple identifies a powered USB hub as an option for USB-C iPhones. For Lightning iPhones, it identifies the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter connected to a USB power adapter. These extra power arrangements are conditional, not a requirement for every flash drive.

What to compare before choosing one
- iPhone compatibility: Match the connector and verify the specific iPhone model and drive model.
- Access method: Check whether the drive is recognized in Files, requires a manufacturer app, or supports both workflows.
- Capacity: Choose enough space for the files you intend to move or keep on the drive.
- Computer compatibility: Confirm the drive’s other connector works with your Mac or PC.
- Format and power: Confirm the drive’s file system and partition layout meet Apple’s requirements; check whether it needs external power.
