An iPad flash drive is a portable USB storage device used to open or move files on a compatible iPad. It plugs into the iPad’s charging port, either directly or through an adapter. In a supported app such as Files, it can then appear under Locations. It is external storage. It does not add built-in memory to the iPad.
What the term means
The phrase covers any flash drive that works with an iPad. Apple lists USB drives and SD cards as external storage that Files and other supported apps can access, so the files stay on the drive and the iPad reads them or copies them across (Apple Support: Connect external storage devices to iPad).

The term is loose. It can mean a standard USB drive used with an adapter, a USB-C drive plugged straight into a USB-C iPad, or a drive with a Lightning connector sold for iPhone and iPad. These behave differently, so the right choice depends on your iPad.

What decides whether a drive works
The iPad’s port
A USB-C iPad may take a compatible USB-C drive directly. Other models may need an adapter. Apple names Lightning and USB-C adapter options that vary by model (Apple Support).

The drive’s format and partitions
For Apple’s native workflow, the drive needs a single data partition. Apple lists these supported formats:
- APFS
- Encrypted APFS
- macOS Extended (HFS+)
- exFAT (FAT64)
- FAT32
- FAT
The manufacturer’s app
Some drives rely on a maker’s app instead of Files. SanDisk says some of its USB-C drives work with Apple Files on iOS 13 and above over USB-C. It also says its Lightning-connector drives do not appear in Files, and that its app handles Lightning-port workflows (SanDisk Support). That is SanDisk’s statement about its own products. Do not assume other brands behave the same way.

Power
Apple notes that external hard drives often need external power and describes power options. A simple flash drive should not automatically be assumed to have the same problem. Check your specific drive and iPad.

Which option suits which iPad

How to use one
- Connect the drive to the iPad’s charging port, directly or through the right adapter.
- Open Files and tap Browse.
- Look for the drive under Locations.
- Copy items to or from the drive in Files or another supported app. Apple describes this in its guide to transferring files to a storage device.
On USB-C iPad models, Files can also format an external drive as APFS, ExFAT, or MS-DOS (FAT). Formatting erases the drive, so copy off anything you need first.

If the drive does not appear
- Check that the connector or adapter suits your iPad.
- Check the drive’s format against the supported list above.
- Check that the drive has only one data partition.
- For a Lightning-connector drive, try the maker’s app, since Files may not list it.
Work through these before deciding the drive is faulty.

No single flash drive fits every iPad. Match the drive’s connector to your iPad’s port, use a supported format with one partition, and add an adapter only if your model needs one.
