An Internet Media Tablet (IMT) was a historical category of tablet-style portable computer built around internet access and media playback. The phrase is particularly associated with ARCHOS devices such as the ARCHOS 5. It is not a standard name for modern tablets.
What is an Internet Media Tablet?
A 2011 industry overview in a Hong Kong securities filing defines an Internet Media Tablet as a type of tablet PC. It describes tablet PCs of the period as small, thin computers with many features of a full-size personal computer, typically operated by touchscreen and without an attached keyboard. That description reflects terminology used at the time, rather than a current technical standard. In practical terms, an IMT was a portable, tablet-like computer emphasizing web access alongside entertainment and media features.
How did the Internet Media Tablet differ from a tablet PC?
In the 2011 filing, “tablet PC” is the broader category and “Internet Media Tablet” is a type within it. ARCHOS’s product materials show the narrower emphasis: its ARCHOS 5 product sheet presented the device as a handheld way to enjoy the internet, media and TV, while the ARCHOS 7 announcement highlighted Wi-Fi web access, email and HD video playback. Those are examples of ARCHOS’s products and positioning, not requirements that applied to every device using the label. ARCHOS 5 product sheet · ARCHOS 7 announcement

Why do Internet tablet and MID descriptions overlap?
Period technology writing did not use all neighboring labels consistently. Computerworld reported that “smartbook,” “Internet tablet,” “Internet media tablet,” “pocket PC” and “Ultramobile PC” were sometimes used interchangeably with “MID.” The terms therefore do not support a dependable, strict technical taxonomy: a product description from that period may use one label where another source uses a neighboring one. Computerworld coverage of overlapping terms
Device details also varied. Input methods, voice and data support, and storage depended on individual MID products; they should not be inferred from the IMT name alone.

What was the ARCHOS 5 Internet Media Tablet?
The ARCHOS 5 was a representative handheld product associated with the Internet Media Tablet label. ARCHOS positioned it around internet use, media playback and TV features in a handheld device. The ARCHOS 7 is another example of the same broad product approach, with its announcement emphasizing Wi-Fi browsing, email and HD video.

A modern tablet is related in form and broad category, not automatically an IMT.
