An Internet email service is the networked system that lets people submit, send, relay, deliver, store and access email over the Internet. It is not just an email app or one provider’s server: it is a set of cooperating services and protocols that move messages between mail systems and make them available in mailboxes.
What an Internet email service includes
Email depends on several components working together. The main roles are message transfer, message formatting and mailbox access. A provider operates or arranges services for accepting, transporting and storing mail; an email app or webmail interface is the software a person uses to interact with those services.

| Component | Role | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| SMTP | Submits and transfers messages between systems, including relaying them toward a recipient’s mail domain. | Sending and transport |
| Internet Message Format (IMF) | Defines the syntax of message contents, including headers and an optional body. | Message representation |
| MIME | Extends message formatting to support multimedia attachments and other structured content. | Message representation |
| IMAP or POP | Lets email software access messages in a mailbox. | Reading and mailbox access |
These are standards and protocols, not brands or apps. The specific arrangement of services varies by provider. The Internet Mail Architecture described in RFC 5598 explains how the roles fit together.

- Compose: The sender writes a message in an email client, webmail interface or another user agent.
- Submit: The sending system passes the message to an SMTP service.
- Route and relay: SMTP moves the message toward the recipient’s mail domain. It may pass through one or more relay systems; DNS mail exchanger information helps identify the next host.
- Accept and store: The recipient’s mail service accepts the message and makes it available in a mailbox.
- Access: The recipient’s software retrieves or synchronizes mailbox messages using a protocol such as IMAP or POP.
SMTP is designed to transfer mail reliably and efficiently, as stated in RFC 5321. That describes the protocol’s objective, not a guarantee that every message will be delivered.

Message contents and delivery addressing are different
An email has both message content and transport information. The SMTP envelope contains originator and recipient addresses used to route delivery. The message itself contains header fields and may include a body. Those two sets of information are related, but they are not the same thing: the envelope guides transport, while the message format describes the contents presented as the email.
RFC 5321 specifies SMTP transport and envelope behavior, while RFC 5322 specifies Internet Message Format. RFC 5322 describes text-message syntax; MIME adds support for attachments and other structured media.
Is an email service the same as an email app?
No. An email service is the backend system that accepts, transports and stores mail and exposes mailboxes. An email app, webmail page or other user agent is the interface a person uses to compose and read messages. A user can access a provider’s mail service through different software, provided the service and software support the relevant access methods.

What TLS protects—and what it does not establish
TLS can protect connections used for email submission and mailbox access. RFC 8314 addresses TLS for SMTP submission and for IMAP and POP access. This is connection protection; by itself, it does not establish that a message is encrypted end to end between sender and recipient. Provider-specific security practices and account protections also vary.
