What Is an Infrastructure Processing Unit (IPU)?

An IPU is programmable data-center hardware for offloading infrastructure tasks such as networking, storage, and security. Its architecture and capabilities vary by product.

An infrastructure processing unit (IPU) is a programmable data-center device that handles infrastructure work—such as networking, storage, and security—so a host CPU can focus more on application workloads. Providers also use IPUs to help separate their managed infrastructure from tenant workloads. The term describes a hardware category, not one universal design: IPUs can use system-on-chip, processor-plus-FPGA, or custom ASIC implementations.

What does IPU stand for?

IPU stands for infrastructure processing unit. Intel defines an IPU as “a networking device that securely accelerates and manages infrastructure functions in a data center with programmable hardware.” The definition captures its role, but not a fixed architecture or feature set: those vary by product and provider.

In practical terms, an IPU is specialized data-center hardware that takes on some of the work needed to connect, store, and protect workloads. Moving that work away from the host CPU can reduce infrastructure overhead and leave more CPU capacity for applications. Intel describes that as a design goal; the actual benefit depends on the workload and implementation.

What does an IPU do?

An IPU can process infrastructure tasks that would otherwise consume host resources. Which tasks it handles depends on the product and how the data center deploys it.

  • Storage: storage virtualization, storage transport, and offloading storage-initiator work.
  • Security and isolation: helping keep provider-managed infrastructure functions separate from tenant workloads; some products also document secure boot or security-focused workloads.

Intel lists virtualized and bare-metal environments, remote-storage access, and security air-gap use cases for its IPU products. Its FPGA platform materials also name Open vSwitch, NVMe over Fabrics, RoCEv2, and AI-related workloads. These are examples of supported or targeted uses, not a promise that every IPU handles them.

How is an IPU different from a CPU or SmartNIC?

IPU versus host CPU

A host CPU runs operating systems and application code. An IPU is intended to take on selected infrastructure functions, often under the control of the cloud or data-center provider. The aim is to reduce the infrastructure work performed by the host and support isolation between provider services and tenant workloads; it does not replace the CPU.

  • DUAL NIC FAST 2.5GBE + WIFI 6E + BT 5.2 - Dual Ethernet 2.5GbE LAN port design provides more applications, such as firewall, multichannel aggregation, soft routing, file storage server. Built-in WIFI 6E / Bluetooth 5.2 is more stable and efficient to connect multiple wireless devices such as projector, printer, monitor, speakers and etc

IPU versus SmartNIC

SmartNIC is a useful neighboring term because both categories can offload networking and storage work from a host. Intel describes its FPGA-based IPUs as an evolution of its SmartNIC product line, distinguishing them by a processor complex paired with an FPGA and the ability to offload broader networking and storage stacks. That is Intel’s product framing, not a universal industry rule: labels alone do not establish that an IPU and a SmartNIC are interchangeable.

When comparing devices, check the actual workloads they support, architecture, programmability, isolation and security model, network connectivity, performance, and software support.

Do all IPUs use the same architecture?

No. “IPU” identifies a purpose more than a single chip design. The examples below show how implementations differ; they do not establish that every vendor uses the term identically.

Example Implementation or context Documented details
Intel IPU Adapter E2100 SoC-based adapter Intel lists 16 Arm Neoverse N1 cores and either 2 × 100 GbE or 1 × 200 GbE connectivity on its product page, accessed October 4, 2026.
Intel FPGA IPU platforms Intel Xeon D processor complex paired with an Altera FPGA Intel describes these platforms as able to offload networking and storage stacks; supported uses vary by platform and software.
Google Cloud Titanium IPU Google describes its co-designed IPU as a system-on-chip Google says it supports programmable packet processing and in-transit encryption using its PSP protocol in infrastructure for third-generation compute instances.
Google Cloud C3 Custom Intel IPU technology in Google Cloud’s C3 machine series A Google post dated October 11, 2022 described programmable packet processing at 200 Gb/s line rates; an editor note says C3 became generally available on May 22, 2023.

These are vendor-specific examples, not a market-wide specification. In particular, the C3 line-rate figure applies to Google’s described deployment; it is not a universal IPU throughput rating.

How should you evaluate an IPU?

If you are assessing a product or comparing it with a SmartNIC, start with the job it must do and the environment it will serve. A useful checklist is:

  • Offloaded workloads: Identify the network, storage, security, or other infrastructure functions the device actually supports.
  • Architecture: Determine whether it is an SoC, a processor-plus-FPGA design, an ASIC, or another implementation.
  • Isolation and security: Look for documented tenant separation, security features, and secure-boot support rather than assuming these from the IPU label.
  • Connectivity and performance: Match port configuration and throughput to the intended deployment. Treat figures as product- and workload-specific.
  • Programmability and software: Check which functions can be programmed, what development framework is available, and what software support is required.
  • Deployment fit: Confirm whether the design targets provider-managed cloud infrastructure, enterprise data centers, bare-metal hosts, or virtualized multi-tenant systems.

Is an IPU a consumer processor?

No. An IPU is specialized data-center infrastructure hardware, not a general-purpose desktop or laptop processor. Intel’s E2100 is described as a cloud and enterprise adapter, and Intel also identifies FPGA IPU development platforms and partner production-ready solutions. Those examples indicate a specialist hardware category; they do not establish ordinary consumer availability or a particular retail channel.
