An IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a 15-digit identifier for a cellular device. Mobile networks use it to recognize a device and check or change its network status, including blocking a device reported lost or stolen. Knowing an IMEI alone does not give someone a way to track a phone live, read its files, or take over its phone number, according to the official sources cited below.
What an IMEI identifies
The IMEI identifies the cellular device, not the mobile subscription. The SIM identifies the subscription currently using the phone. When a device connects, it signals its identifier to the mobile network. A phone with multiple cellular radios or SIM functions may have more than one IMEI, so check the specific identifier with the device or carrier rather than assuming one number covers every line.

GSMA describes the common IMEI as a 15-digit integer. Its parts are:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- First eight digits: the Type Allocation Code (TAC), which identifies the device make and model.
- Next six digits: a serial number associated with that TAC.
- Final digit: a check digit.
In the IMEI SV variant, the last two digits identify the software version instead of using the IMEI check digit. GSMA allocates official TACs. GSMA’s IMEI technical specification explains the structure and network use.

What someone can do with an IMEI
Identify a device and check its network status
A mobile operator can use the identifier and TAC to recognize a device and determine whether its IMEI is blocked. Authorized organizations—including operators, insurers, repair centers, recyclers, and law enforcement—may use device information or status checks for operational purposes. GSMA’s Device Check service is not described as an unrestricted public lookup tool. GSMA’s IMEI Database information describes these uses.
Report a missing phone or request a block
If a phone is lost or stolen, its owner can give the IMEI to the carrier as part of a report. A carrier may suspend service or bar the device from cellular access on its network. Operators using the GSMA Device Registry can share identifiers for lost, stolen, faulty, or otherwise unsuitable devices, allowing other participating networks to block them as well. The reach of a block depends on operator participation and implementation; it is not a guarantee that every network worldwide will reject the device. GSMA’s Device Registry overview describes the shared registry.
Law enforcement may ask for the IMEI when you report a stolen phone. Google’s Android guidance for a lost or stolen device also recommends contacting your carrier.

What an IMEI alone does not show or enable
The official sources cited here describe device identification, status checks, and network blocking. They do not establish that a person who merely knows an IMEI can locate a phone in real time, unlock it, read its files, access accounts, or take control of its phone number. Remote locating, locking, or erasing is handled through separate platform tools and depends on the relevant account, settings, and availability—not an IMEI lookup alone.
Share the identifier only when there is a good reason, such as dealing with your carrier, manufacturer support, law enforcement, or a reputable used-phone check. Avoid posting it publicly or including it in a public sales listing.
How to find your IMEI
On many cellular phones, entering *#06# in the phone app displays the IMEI. It may also appear on a device label, although many current phones do not have a removable back or a printed identifier. See GSMA’s IMEI FAQ for general guidance.

For iPhone or cellular iPad
Open Settings > General > About. Depending on the model, the IMEI may also be available on the SIM tray or device body, in Finder or Apple Devices/iTunes, in your Apple Account device list, or on the original packaging. Apple says iPhone 14 models and later do not have an IMEI engraving. Check Apple’s instructions for finding your iPhone or iPad serial number, IMEI, and other identifiers for model-specific details.

- Contact your carrier promptly. Ask it to suspend service and whether it can block the device’s IMEI. Have your account and device details ready.
- Use the maker’s remote-finding service. For Android, Google documents Find Hub for locating, locking, or erasing a device, depending on account and setting availability. This is separate from IMEI blocking; see Google’s lost-device guidance.
- If the phone was stolen, report it to local law enforcement. Provide the IMEI if requested.
- Secure accounts and payment apps used on the phone. Google recommends protections including a screen lock, SIM PIN, and remote device controls.
Checking an IMEI before buying a used phone
Ask the seller for the IMEI and check its status through an appropriate carrier or recognized device-check service before paying. GSMA Device Check uses a red status for an identifier flagged on the GSMA Block List and green for one not currently flagged on that list. A green result is limited: it does not prove the phone is legitimate, unlocked, paid off, compatible with your carrier, or free of account locks. Confirm those points with the seller and carrier. GSMA’s Device Check information explains the status result.
Compare the device details shown by the check with the actual phone. GSMA says a mismatch may mean the device is counterfeit or its electronic identity has been tampered with. A status check answers whether that identifier is currently flagged in the relevant data; it is not a complete authenticity or purchase-safety guarantee.
