What Is an Image Format? Common Types and How to Choose

Image formats encode image data in different ways. Compare JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF, and SVG by compression, transparency, animation, and scaling.

An image format is a defined way of encoding and storing image data. Formats such as JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF, and SVG differ in how they compress images and whether they support transparency, animation, or sharp scaling. The right choice depends on what the image contains and where it will be used.

What an image format determines

An image file’s extension—such as .jpg, .png, or .svg—identifies a format, not just a different name for the same kind of file. The format determines how image information is represented and what features are available. For example, compression can reduce file size by discarding detail or by preserving it; some formats can store transparent areas or animation, while vector formats describe shapes rather than a fixed grid of pixels. MDN’s image format guide describes these distinctions.

Most photographs and screenshots are raster images: they are made of pixels, so enlarging them beyond their original resolution can make them look soft or blocky. SVG is a vector format, which describes graphics using shapes and paths that can be rendered at different sizes.

How common image formats differ

Format Type and characteristics Often useful for Main trade-off
JPEG/JPG Raster; uses lossy compression, which discards some image information. Photographs where a smaller file is useful and some detail loss is acceptable. Does not support transparency and is not suited to exact reproduction.
PNG Raster; uses lossless compression and supports transparency. Screenshots, diagrams, logos, line art, and images with transparent areas. Can produce larger files than lossy formats for photographs.
GIF Raster; uses a limited color palette and can provide basic animation. Simple animations and limited-color graphics. Its palette makes it a poor default for detailed photographs; other formats may encode animation more efficiently.
WebP Raster; supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation. Web images when smaller files and modern browser support are priorities. Consider a fallback for clients that do not support it.
AVIF Raster; supports still and animated images, transparency, and higher color depths. Web images when compression efficiency is a priority. Use a fallback if support in the target browsers or software is not assured.
SVG Vector; represents graphics as shapes and paths rather than pixels. Icons, interface graphics, and diagrams that need to stay crisp at different sizes. It is a different way of representing images and is not a general substitute for a photograph.

These format characteristics are summarized in MDN’s guide. The W3C PNG specification describes PNG’s format, including its lossless image representation.

How to choose a format

  • For a photograph: Choose JPEG for a straightforward, widely compatible option. For web delivery, WebP or AVIF may be suitable when compression efficiency matters; compare the result at the quality you need.
  • For screenshots, diagrams, or sharp text and edges: Use a lossless option such as PNG when preserving precise detail matters. Lossy compression can introduce visible artifacts around crisp edges.
  • For a transparent background: Use a format that supports transparency, such as PNG, WebP, or AVIF. JPEG does not support an alpha channel for transparency.
  • For an icon or diagram that must scale cleanly: Use SVG when the artwork is available as vector graphics. A raster image can lose sharpness when enlarged.
  • For animation: GIF is a familiar option for simple animations. WebP, AVIF, and APNG are alternatives to consider, taking target-client support and file efficiency into account.
  • For web pages: Select formats based on the image and the visitors’ browser support. When offering modern formats, provide a compatible fallback where needed.

Offering image format alternatives on the web

HTML’s <picture> element lets a page offer multiple image sources so the browser can use a suitable supported format and fall back to an ordinary image source. For example:

<picture>
  <source srcset="photo.avif" type="image/avif">
  <source srcset="photo.webp" type="image/webp">
  <img src="photo.jpg" alt="Description of the photograph">
</picture>

The order places the preferred alternatives first; the img element provides the fallback and alternative text. Check support in the browsers and applications that matter to your audience. Google Search Central lists BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG, and AVIF as image formats supported by Google Search; that list is specific to Search and does not guarantee support in every browser or application.
