An HTML linter checks markup against selected rules and reports findings; a formatter rewrites the source to make its presentation consistent. They can overlap on style, and some lint rules can offer fixes, but their main jobs differ. In most projects, use a formatter for layout and configure the linter to focus on standards, structure, accessibility-related checks, and project requirements.
What an HTML linter does
An HTML linter performs static analysis: it reads HTML source and checks it against a chosen set of rules. Depending on the tool and configuration, it can flag problems such as invalid structure, duplicate IDs, missing attributes, or inconsistent conventions. HTMLHint describes itself as a static analysis tool for HTML, while html-validate provides HTML5 validation and rules that cover areas including syntax, content models, accessibility, security, SEO, and style.

A linter reports what its enabled rules find; it does not automatically establish that a page is correct in every respect. The result depends on the selected rules and presets, and a clean run means only that those checks reported no issue. It is not proof of complete standards conformance, accessibility, or correct behavior in every browser.
What a formatter does
A source formatter rewrites markup presentation to match formatting conventions. It may standardize indentation, line breaks, and wrapping so that files look consistent across a project. That is different from a linter’s main role: reporting whether code meets selected rules.

There is some overlap. Linters can include style rules, and some rules are marked as fixable. A linter fix may modify source, but that does not make linting and formatting the same function. Check what a fix changes before applying it, especially if a formatter also owns the file’s layout.
Linter vs. formatter: the practical difference
| Question | HTML linter | Source formatter |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Evaluate HTML against selected rules and report findings. | Rewrite source presentation to follow formatting conventions. |
| Typical result | Diagnostics about structure, attributes, IDs, accessibility-related checks, or style violations. | Updated source with consistent indentation, wrapping, and layout. |
| What you configure | Rules, presets, suppressions, and possibly custom checks. | Formatting preferences for supported syntax. |
| Does it change source? | Sometimes, when a rule or tool supports fixes. | Yes. Rewriting source presentation is its purpose. |
| How they work together | Keep checks that add value; align or disable style rules that conflict with the formatter. | Run consistently, then lint the formatted result. |
The exact boundary depends on the tools and configuration. For example, html-validate has both style rules and fixable rules, alongside checks that go beyond presentation. See its rule reference.

How to choose linter rules for your HTML
Start with the kind of source you are checking and what you want the tool to catch. html-validate documents different presets for standards validation, recommended checks, and complete documents. Its standard preset targets the WHATWG HTML Living Standard; recommended adds standards validation, WCAG-related rules, and best practices; document adds checks intended for complete documents rather than partial templates. Review the preset documentation before selecting one.

- For accessibility-related checks: enable relevant rules, while treating their results as useful checks rather than proof of full accessibility compliance.
- For component templates or fragments: avoid checks that assume the file is a complete HTML document.
- For team conventions: enable the style or project-specific rules that provide value, and avoid duplicating the formatter’s job.
HTMLHint also supports project configuration and custom rules. Its rule catalog includes checks for document structure, element and attribute style, IDs, and accessibility-related requirements.

How to use a linter and formatter together
- Install one linter as a development dependency. For example, html-validate documents the npm installation and command-line workflow in its getting started guide. HTMLHint documents
npm install htmlhint --save-devand command-line checks on files or directories in its project README. - Commit the project’s lint configuration. Shared configuration helps command-line runs, editor diagnostics, and team use apply the same rules. HTMLHint’s options documentation describes project configuration.
- Let the formatter own source layout. Keep lint rules that check correctness or project requirements; remove or align rules that enforce a conflicting presentation choice.
- Run formatting before linting. This gives the linter the consistently formatted source that the project intends to maintain.
- Use editor integration if helpful. HTMLHint provides a VS Code extension that can show diagnostics in the editor and use workspace rule configuration.
If you use Prettier with html-validate, html-validate recommends its prettier preset to disable conflicting style rules, including void-style. That avoids repeated changes between formatter and linter while retaining other checks; see the preset documentation.
HTMLHint’s “formatter” option means something different
In HTMLHint documentation, a formatter can mean the format used to present lint results—for example, JSON, HTML, or Markdown output. That controls how diagnostics are displayed, not how the HTML source is indented or wrapped. Check the context when a tool uses the word “formatter”: it may refer to report output rather than source formatting. HTMLHint explains its options in the options documentation.
