In everyday TV use, the term almost always means a streaming stick: a compact, internet-connected media player that brings streaming apps and video to the screen. “Dongle” describes the form factor and the way the device is used. It is not a brand or a shared technical standard, so the same word can also describe other small HDMI adapters.
What HDMI does in a dongle setup
HDMI is the cable-and-port standard that carries audio and video from a source device to a display over a single connection. Roku’s support article “Getting to know HDMI” describes it as carrying audio, video and communication between compatible devices over that one connection. For a streaming stick, HDMI is the output path: the stick sends its picture and sound to the TV.

The content itself usually does not come through the HDMI port. A streaming stick reaches its apps and video over your home network, so its main job depends on an internet connection. The HDMI link only carries the result to the screen.

Google’s support article “What is CEC?” explains that CEC can let a compatible TV switch to the input a connected device is using, under certain device and power conditions. It is a convenience, not a requirement. A dongle works without it, and whether it behaves the way Google describes depends on both the TV and the device.

Streaming sticks, set-top boxes and other HDMI dongles
The word “dongle” is loose, so it helps to separate the common types before buying.

Only the plug-in form is normally called a dongle or a stick. A set-top box can be a streaming device too, but it is not the same product type.

Checks before you buy one
- A free HDMI input. The TV needs an available HDMI port for the device.
- TV resolution and HDR support. 4K and HDR picture formats require a TV that supports them. A stick can work with an older TV, but it cannot add 4K or HDR the display does not support.
- A power plan. The device needs power, and the TV’s USB port may not supply enough.
- Port clearance. Check whether the device will block neighbouring ports on the TV.
- An internet connection. Streaming sticks depend on your network for their main function.
- Services and region. Confirm that the apps you want are offered on that device in your country.
- The remote. Remote features differ by model, so check the remote for the exact device you are considering.
Setting up a Roku Streaming Stick 4K
Roku’s support article “How to set up your Roku Streaming Stick 4K” gives the following order. Follow it in sequence.
- Confirm that the TV has an HDMI port that is free.
- Plug the Streaming Stick 4K into that HDMI port.
- Connect the power. Roku recommends the power cable and adapter included in the box.
- Turn on the TV.
- On the TV, select the HDMI input that matches the port you used. Your TV’s input or source menu is where this is set.
Roku’s compatibility guidance says the 4K stick works with any TV that has HDMI. A TV without 4K or HDR support will not display those formats, even though the stick connects and runs. Roku’s separate article “Do I need a special TV?” makes the same point about its players connecting directly to HDMI televisions.

Examples: Roku Streaming Stick 4K and Amazon Fire TV Stick
The Roku Streaming Stick 4K and the Amazon Fire TV Stick are two widely cited examples of this type. Amazon’s guide “How to connect Amazon Fire Stick to TV” describes the Fire TV Stick as a compact streaming device that connects to HDMI and provides access to apps.
The two are not interchangeable in every detail. Resolution, power arrangement, remote features, and the app list are specific to each model. Roku’s current product page describes the Streaming Stick 4K’s connectivity, resolution, power and remote, and those specifications change between product generations, so check the page for the exact model before you buy. Neither the Amazon nor the Roku source here confirms that every app is available in every country.

When something goes wrong
No picture after setup
The most common cause is the wrong input. Confirm that the TV is set to the HDMI input the stick is plugged into, and check the stick’s power separately.
Picture is limited to a lower resolution
The stick is not the limit. If the TV does not support 4K or HDR, the picture will not show those formats. Check the TV’s specifications rather than the stick’s.

The stick does not start on TV USB power
Roku warns that a TV’s USB port may work for power but does not always supply enough for the Streaming Stick 4K. Use the included power cable and adapter instead of the TV’s USB port.
The stick blocks other ports
If the stick sits over the neighbouring HDMI ports or leaves no room for cables, an HDMI extender can give it clearance. Roku says its support team can provide an extender for the Streaming Stick 4K when needed, so contact Roku support rather than buying a generic extender if you need one.
In short, a TV dongle is a small plug-in device that carries a TV’s streaming function or another added feature through HDMI. Whether it suits your setup depends on the TV’s input and display support, your power and port layout, and the services available on the exact model you choose.
