In compatible cameras, it could send photos to a configured destination over Wi-Fi, reducing the need to remove the card for each transfer. It is now legacy technology: Eye-Fi’s 2016 end-of-life notice covered X2 and earlier products and warned that key services would shut down. A surviving card should not be treated as a dependable plug-and-play option with today’s cameras, phones, computers, or operating systems.
What is an Eye-Fi card?
Eye-Fi combined memory-card storage with wireless networking. A compatible camera saved images to the card, which could then transfer them over a wireless LAN to a configured computer or similar destination. Sony’s 2014 DSC-H400 guide, for example, describes setting wireless access-point or transfer-direction options before taking pictures; that documentation applies to the camera model covered by the guide, not every camera with an SD slot. How did wireless photo transfer work?
The general idea was simple, but successful transfers depended on several pieces working together: a supported camera, the right card and settings, a configured destination or network, and software appropriate to that card generation. Older Eye-Fi Center setup used a computer application and an Eye-Fi account. The documented Direct Mode option instead had the card create a Wi-Fi network for supported mobile devices. These are descriptions of historical setup paths; they do not establish that the software, account service, or phone apps still work.

When did the camera send images?
There was no single trigger for every camera. Casio’s FAQ describes particular models that start communication after a photo is taken, and may transfer outstanding images when the camera is powered on. It also says transfer does not occur while those cameras are recording a movie or storing data. Casio Eye-Fi FAQ
What could affect transfer?
- The camera and card had to support the relevant Eye-Fi features, and the destination or wireless settings had to be configured.
- Wireless reception could be interrupted. Sony’s DSC-H400 guide also says uploading disables that camera’s Power Save feature and that its guide does not support Endless Memory Mode on some Eye-Fi cards. These cautions are model-specific, not universal characteristics of every Eye-Fi setup.
- Some camera guides describe situations in which communication is unavailable, such as movie recording or data storage. Check the exact camera manual rather than assuming that every camera transfers in the same way.
What happened to Eye-Fi support?
On June 30, 2016, Eye-Fi announced the final end-of-life stage for X2 and earlier products and advised customers to stop using them by September 16, 2016, when key services were due to shut down. The notice named legacy card models and Eye-Fi Center software for Windows and Mac, its iOS and Android apps, and the Eye-Fi Center web app. SanDisk’s support page also records the announced end of support and the September 16 deadline. Eye-Fi said that after the cutoff, users could no longer create an Eye-Fi Center account or log in; software might still be installed, but account access would fail. The company said Direct Mode might not be directly affected, while warning that continued operation was not guaranteed and that its apps would not receive updates for operating-system changes. That historical caveat is not evidence that Direct Mode works today.

Will an old Eye-Fi card work with your camera or phone now?
That cannot be answered reliably from the card name alone. The camera manuals establish support for specific models, not universal compatibility, and the end-of-life notice makes old account- and app-dependent workflows especially uncertain. No current reliability or compatibility claim is established for a surviving card and contemporary devices.
- Identify the exact card model. Distinguish pre-X2, X2, Mobi, and Mobi Pro rather than relying on the Eye-Fi brand name alone.
- Check the camera’s manual for that exact model. Look for Eye-Fi settings and any restrictions; an SD-card slot by itself does not prove Eye-Fi support.
- Treat legacy apps and services as unsupported. Do not assume Eye-Fi Center, an old mobile app, an account, or Direct Mode can be set up or used today.
- Use a card reader for a predictable basic transfer. A USB SD card reader can move files from a readable card to a computer without restoring any Eye-Fi service; if the card is not recognized, use a standard supported memory card instead.
Are there restrictions on using an Eye-Fi card?
Wireless LAN use can be prohibited in some locations. Sony’s guide specifically cautions against inserting an Eye-Fi card where wireless LAN is prohibited, giving an airplane as an example, and notes regional restrictions and an Eye-Fi-off setting. Follow the rules that apply where you are and the instructions for your camera; the guide is not a statement of current regulations everywhere. Sony DSC-H400 Eye-Fi guide

Compatibility and service history also matter. Canon’s notice concerns X2 cards and a narrowly defined group of EOS cameras associated with main-board replacements during specified historical timeframes. It is not a general warning about all Canon cameras or all SD cards. Canon Eye-Fi and SD card service notice
