An endspan PoE switch is an Ethernet switch with Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) built in. It sends network data and power over Ethernet cabling to compatible devices such as cameras, phones, and wireless access points. A midspan, by contrast, is a separate injector or power hub placed between a non-PoE switch and the powered device.
What does “endspan” mean in PoE?
“Endspan” describes where the power-sourcing function sits: inside the Ethernet switch. The switch acts as the PSE, while the connected powered device (PD) receives power and data through its Ethernet connection. Cisco describes an endspan as a network switch with PoE capabilities that supplies power directly to the end device in its 2024 PoE training material. An IEEE-hosted presentation likewise labels it a “PoE enabled Ethernet switch” (IEEE-hosted presentation).

How is an endspan different from a midspan?
A midspan is a separate PSE, commonly called a PoE injector, installed between a switch that does not provide PoE and the powered device. It adds power to the Ethernet link while the original switch continues to provide the network connection. Microchip’s PoE explanation describes this placement; Leviton’s cabling white paper notes that a midspan can suit an existing network when adding PoE is the main upgrade.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute| Architecture | Where the PSE is | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|
| Endspan | Integrated into the PoE Ethernet switch | A deployment needing a switch that also supplies PoE to compatible devices |
| Midspan | Separate injector or power hub between a non-PoE switch and the PD | An existing network where PoE is being added without replacing the switch |
These terms describe equipment architecture, not a universal ranking. Which arrangement fits depends on the existing network, switching needs, installation layout, and the power and compatibility requirements of the devices.

What endspan does not tell you
The label alone does not specify the PoE standard, power level, or number of ports that can deliver power. Those capabilities vary by switch model. Before connecting devices, check the switch’s specifications against each PD’s requirements:
- PoE compatibility: confirm the relevant IEEE PoE standard or class is supported by both the PSE and PD.
- Per-port delivery: check how much power an individual port can supply and whether that meets the device’s requirement.
- Total PoE budget: confirm the switch can supply the combined power required by the devices you plan to connect.
- Network and installation needs: verify the required number of powered ports, switching features, cable design, and topology in the equipment documentation.
Cisco specifically advises checking compatibility between the PSE and PD. The word “endspan” by itself is not evidence that a switch supports PoE+, PoE++, a particular wattage, or any particular number of powered ports.

Does endspan mean power uses a particular wire pair?
Not by itself. In traditional 2-pair descriptions, endspan is associated with powering over the data pairset, while midspan is associated with the spare pairset. That shorthand is incomplete for modern PoE: 4-pair powering uses both pairsets. Microchip’s technical explanation of PoE power interfaces treats pair use separately from the endspan-versus-midspan architecture distinction.
