An email blast is an informal name for a single campaign email sent to many people at once. Calling it a “blast” does not change the rules: the message still needs to match its purpose, audience, applicable law and the requirements of providers such as Gmail. To do one properly, send useful content to people who reasonably expect it, identify the sender honestly, provide an easy way to unsubscribe, and monitor delivery and recipient feedback.
What an email blast means
“Email blast” is everyday shorthand, not a distinct legal category. Official guidance instead addresses categories such as commercial email, marketing messages and subscription messages. A campaign promoting a product, service or commercial website may be commercial email under U.S. CAN-SPAM rules whether it goes to one person or a large list. The Federal Trade Commission puts it plainly: “The CAN-SPAM Act doesn’t apply just to bulk email.” FTC: CAN-SPAM Act compliance guide

So the useful question is not whether a message counts as a blast, but what it is for, who will receive it, and which rules apply. The checklist below covers U.S. CAN-SPAM guidance and Gmail sender requirements; it is not a global legal checklist.

1. Set one clear purpose
Decide what recipients should understand or do: learn about an announcement, use an offer, attend an event or read an update. Keep the main message and call to action focused. Google’s email guidance recommends clear subjects and headlines, truthful content, accurately described links and an appropriate call to action. Google: Email sender guidelines

2. Choose a relevant, expected audience
Use an audience collected for a relevant purpose, and suppress people who have opted out. The FTC says CAN-SPAM does not require advance consent, but that legal baseline is not a recommendation to email any address you can obtain. Bought lists can include people who previously opted out or addresses collected through unlawful harvesting or dictionary attacks. Some businesses choose to email only people who affirmatively requested messages or have a business relationship with them. Google recommends opt-in and address confirmation for subscription messages. FTC: CAN-SPAM Act compliance guide Google: Email sender guidelines
For international campaigns, check the rules that apply where recipients live. Consent and other requirements vary by country and region; Google’s guidance notes that some jurisdictions impose consent requirements. Google: Email sender guidelines

3. Identify the sender accurately and authenticate the domain
Use sender and routing information that accurately identifies the person or business initiating the message. For mail sent to Gmail accounts, Google requires all senders to use SPF or DKIM. If you send more than 5,000 messages per day to Gmail accounts, Google requires SPF, DKIM and DMARC, with the From domain aligned with SPF or DKIM. Google recommends full authentication and domain alignment for reliability. Check the current requirements and your email service provider’s setup instructions before sending. 4. Make the subject and message truthful
Write a subject that accurately describes the email, and do not disguise an advertisement as a personal or unrelated message. U.S. CAN-SPAM guidance requires commercial email to be clearly identified as an advertisement where applicable. Use a recognizable sender name, explain the offer or announcement plainly, and ensure each link or button label matches its destination. Set reasonable frequency expectations and send at a cadence recipients are likely to find appropriate. FTC: CAN-SPAM Act compliance guide Google: Email sender guidelines

5. Include required business details and a working unsubscribe route
For U.S. commercial email, the FTC guide calls for a clear, conspicuous opt-out method and a valid physical postal address. The opt-out mechanism must remain able to process requests for at least 30 days after sending, and requests must be honored within 10 business days. Do not charge a fee, require more information than the recipient’s email address, or make them take more than the permitted simple action. FTC: CAN-SPAM Act compliance guide
For marketing or subscription messages sent to more than 5,000 Gmail recipients per day, Google requires one-click unsubscribe support as well as a visible unsubscribe link in the message body. Google’s subscription guidance says to process subscription-message unsubscribe requests within 48 hours. These are Gmail sender requirements and guidance, not universal legal deadlines. 6. Ramp up carefully and monitor results
Google recommends increasing sending volume gradually, starting with engaged recipients, sending at a consistent rate rather than in bursts, and monitoring server responses, spam rates and domain reputation. For a new list or unfamiliar sending setup, beginning with a small, relevant audience is a practical way to spot problems before expanding; Google does not prescribe one universal test-list size. Use Postmaster Tools to monitor deliverability, and take complaints seriously because spam reports can negatively affect inbox delivery. Google: Email sender guidelines

Which email-sending approach fits?
There is no objectively best platform or sending method established by the guidance here. Compare options against the work your campaign requires:
- Audience: Do recipients expect this message, and was the list collected for a relevant purpose?
- Purpose: Is it marketing or a subscription update, or a transactional or relationship message? Requirements can differ by message type.
- Scale and recipients: How many messages will go to Gmail accounts, and does the campaign cross Google’s more-than-5,000-per-day threshold?
- List management: Can the setup segment audiences, suppress opt-outs and support the required unsubscribe behavior?
- Operational needs: Can you authenticate the sending domain and monitor complaints, delivery and reputation?
- Reader experience: Is the offer relevant, the frequency reasonable and the call to action clear?
An email marketing platform or bulk email service can be useful if you need campaign composition, audience management and unsubscribe handling together. A tool can support those tasks, but selecting one does not by itself establish legal compliance or guarantee inbox delivery.
