What Is an Eero Wi-Fi System? How Mesh Wi-Fi Works

An eero Wi-Fi system is a home mesh network: one eero connects to your modem or another supported internet source, and compatible eeros placed around the home extend that network. You manage setup and the network in the eero app. The exact Wi-Fi generation, ports, coverage, and performance depend on the model.

How does an eero Wi-Fi system work?

A traditional router sends Wi-Fi from one location, so signal can weaken with distance or be obstructed by walls and other materials. In a mesh system, multiple access points work together to carry the network across a home. eero describes its system this way: “A mesh network is a wifi system where multiple routers work together to deliver fast, stable wifi throughout your home.” (eero Support: What is a mesh network?)

According to eero, its TrueMesh technology lets eeros connect to other in-range eeros and dynamically select a path for traffic. On eero Pro 6, Pro 6E, Max 7, and Pro 7, eero says TrueMesh also evaluates available uplink bands and chooses a backhaul radio band for each connected device. These are eero’s descriptions of its technology, not a guarantee of a particular speed or coverage result in every home. (eero Support: What is TrueMesh?)

What does each eero do?

The gateway eero

One eero with an Ethernet port serves as the gateway. It connects by Ethernet to your modem, fiber ONT, or another supported internet source and provides the connection for the eero network. A gateway-capable eero is needed even if you already have other eero units. (eero Support: What do I need to set up eero?; eero product listings)

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Additional eeros

Other compatible eeros join the same network and extend coverage into areas the gateway may not reach well on its own. You do not necessarily need more than one eero: whether an extra node is useful depends on the home layout, the gateway’s placement, and where coverage is weak. Adding nodes does not guarantee a particular speed or eliminate every dead zone.

How is eero different from a range extender?

eero describes its nodes as access points on one network name. In its comparison with conventional range extenders, eero says extenders may reduce throughput or create a separate network name (SSID), while eero nodes form a mesh. This is the vendor’s explanation, not an independent comparison test. (eero Support: What is the difference between eero and a range extender?)

Can different eero models work together?

eero says supported models are compatible across releases, so a network can include different eero generations. Compatibility does not make their capabilities identical: Wi-Fi generation, radio bands, Ethernet port count and speed, and other features depend on the specific model. A less capable unit can also limit what is available at the point where it is used. Check the current model listing and compatibility information before buying. (eero technology and model information; eero product listings)

What specifications should you compare?

Compare the gateway and any additional nodes against your internet plan and home requirements. Advertised maximum speeds and coverage are product claims, not predictions of the result in a particular home.

  • Wi-Fi generation and bands: These differ by model and affect supported features and device compatibility.
  • Ethernet ports: Check how many ports a unit has and their speed, especially if you need wired connections or a gateway connection.
  • Advertised coverage and device capacity: Treat these as manufacturer claims for the named product, not guaranteed results across all layouts or conditions.
  • Gateway capability: At least one unit with an Ethernet port must connect to the internet source; an add-on node alone is not a gateway.
  • Current availability: Models and listings change, so confirm the live product specifications rather than applying one product’s figures to the whole eero range.

For example, eero’s shop listing for one product describes dual-band Wi-Fi 5, two gigabit Ethernet ports, speeds up to 350 Mbps, coverage up to 4,500 square feet, and capacity for 50+ connected devices. Those are eero-published claims for that listed product only; they are not independently measured results and do not describe every eero system. (eero shop)

What do you need to set one up?

eero’s setup guidance lists an eero with an Ethernet port, its power cord, an Ethernet cable, an internet connection, and the eero mobile app. Its listed app requirements are iOS 15 or later or Android 9.0 or later; check the current setup page because software requirements can change. eero says the Ethernet cable is included.
