Traders swap against the pool; liquidity providers contribute assets and may earn a share of trading fees.
How an automated market maker works
An order book pairs buy and sell orders at available prices. An AMM instead holds assets in a pool and applies a rule to determine the terms of a swap. Ethereum.org’s AMM glossary describes this formula-based approach; anyone can trade against the pool, while liquidity providers (LPs) supply liquidity and may receive a share of fees.

A Uniswap v2 example
Uniswap is one example, not a definition of every AMM. Ethereum.org describes it as an automated liquidity protocol powered by a constant-product formula. In the v2 walkthrough, an LP deposits two ERC-20 tokens into a pair pool and receives liquidity tokens representing a share of that pool. A trader sends one token to the pool and receives the other. The reserves and the formula determine the exchange rate, so a trade changes the pool’s balance and affects the terms of subsequent trades.
Ethereum.org’s Uniswap v2 walkthrough, published in 2021, reports a 0.30% fee for that version. This is a version-specific figure from the walkthrough, not a general AMM fee or confirmation of current settings across deployments. Fees and pool parameters need to be checked for the particular protocol, pool, and deployment.

What liquidity providers do—and what they risk
LPs put assets into a pool so traders can swap against it. They may earn trading fees, but providing liquidity does not guarantee a profit. One risk is impermanent loss: the shortfall an LP can experience relative to simply holding the pooled assets when their prices diverge. Ethereum.org’s impermanent-loss glossary explains that this relative shortfall can shrink if prices return to their original ratio and is realized when liquidity is withdrawn.
Impermanent loss is a comparison with holding, not a statement that every LP loses money overall. The result also depends on asset-price movements, fees earned, and when liquidity is withdrawn.

Do all AMMs use the same design?
No. Formula-based pool pricing is the shared idea, but the pricing rule, pool composition, fee, and LP risks depend on the protocol and pool. Uniswap v2 illustrates a constant-product design with two ERC-20 assets; that example should not be generalized to every AMM. Ethereum.org’s app directory also identifies other pool-based protocols, including Balancer and Curve, but those brief descriptions are not enough to establish a detailed technical comparison.
When assessing a specific pool, check its current documentation for the pricing rule, supported assets, fee, and terms for providing or withdrawing liquidity. A protocol’s name alone does not establish those details.

- BUILT FOR YOUR MARKET, FUTURES, STOCKS, FOREX, OPTIONS & CRYPTO: 4X is a mindset and process journal, not a strategy tool tied to one instrument. The plan, the trade log, the deep dive and the weekly review work the same whether you trade ES, EURUSD, SPY or BTC. Traders use it across all five markets every day.
- THE 2026 EDITION, REBUILT FROM TRADER FEEDBACK: Same trusted system, better in every way. An extra daily page for more room to log the session. Weekly reviews now grouped with each week's trades, so no more flipping back and forth. Crisp, darker print that's easy on the eyes after hours on a screen. A Quick-Start QR that scans straight to step-by-step instructions.
- NOT A NOTEBOOK, A COMPLETE 12-WEEK SYSTEM: Start with a one-time 9-part Trading Plan (your market, setups, risk rules and discipline checklist). Then twelve identical weeks: five Daily Logs, five Deep Dive trade pages, and a two-page Weekly Review. 189 guided pages, roughly 80 trades. Guided prompts walk you through every step. You never stare at a blank page.
- RATE YOUR EXECUTION, NOT YOUR RESULT: Your platform tracks the P&L. Nothing tracks the why. Log energy, sleep and mindset before the open; grade every trade A to F on whether you followed your plan, not on whether it won; then face the pattern every weekend with START / STOP / IMPROVE / CONTINUE. That review habit is the edge. You're 42% more likely to hit a goal you've written down.
- BUILT TO LAST, ARRIVES GIFT-READY: Vegan-leather hardcover, 100gsm bleed-resistant paper, two ribbon markers and an elastic closure band. Bound to lay flat so you're not fighting the spine while you write. 189 pages, 5.75" x 8.5", carries in a bag. Ships in a premium gift box: the gift every trader in your life actually wants.
AMM in one sentence
An AMM is software that quotes trades from pooled assets using a formula; traders swap with the pool, and LPs supply liquidity in exchange for possible fees and exposure to pool-specific risks.
