It matters when diagnosing missing disk space or investigating inaccessible sectors, but DCO is not the same as a Host Protected Area (HPA), and changing it can alter device state.
What does an ATA Device Configuration Overlay do?
DCO is an optional ATA feature set that lets a utility change which commands, modes, feature sets and capacity a drive reports to its host. The ATA specification says it modifies what appears in the IDENTIFY DEVICE or IDENTIFY PACKET DEVICE response. In practical terms, a drive may report less capacity or fewer capabilities than its full selectable configuration.

DCO is a specific storage-device feature, not a general name for Android resource overlays, Linux device-tree overlays or arbitrary device settings. Support depends on the drive and the connection path; not every disk exposes DCO commands to the host. The T13 ATA specification draft describes the feature and its commands.
Which ATA commands are involved?
The specification defines four DCO operations. Their names indicate why identifying a configuration is different from changing or restoring it.

| Command | Purpose |
|---|---|
| DEVICE CONFIGURATION IDENTIFY | Reports selectable capabilities. |
| DEVICE CONFIGURATION SET | Applies a selected, reduced configuration. |
| DEVICE CONFIGURATION RESTORE | Discards a DCO setting, subject to specification conditions. |
| DEVICE CONFIGURATION FREEZE LOCK | Prevents further DCO operations until the device is powered down and up. |
Restore is not an unconditional undo button: the specification notes that a Host Protected Area can prevent a restore that would reduce capacity, and a freeze lock also blocks restore. Because SET and RESTORE can change device state, do not issue them casually while troubleshooting or preserving evidence.
How is DCO different from HPA?
DCO and HPA (Host Protected Area) are distinct mechanisms, although both can be relevant when a system appears unable to access some disk sectors. DCO changes the device’s reported configuration; HPA concerns the maximum addressable sectors exposed to the host. Finding one does not establish that the other is present.

Linux-oriented guidance treats the checks separately: the hdparm reference documents DCO identification and separately describes HPA-related maximum-sector checking. A community question titled “Check for host protected area and device configuration overlay” reflects the common need to examine both; it is not evidence that they are interchangeable. See the discussion.

How should you inspect a disk?
Start with read-only identification rather than a configuration-changing operation. On Linux, hdparm’s documentation covers DCO identification and HPA-related maximum-sector checks, but what you can observe varies with drive firmware, permissions, utility version and the connection path. A USB bridge, for example, may affect whether ATA commands pass through.

- Record the drive identity, firmware and how it is connected.
- Capture read-only identification results, including DCO information and HPA-related maximum-sector information where supported.
- Compare reported and real capacity values only where the device and utility expose comparable values.
- Do not treat a missing report as proof that a drive has never had a configuration overlay.
The available command support is device-dependent; consult the drive documentation before relying on a particular utility result. The hdparm reference describes relevant options but does not make every drive or bridge behave identically.

If a DCO configuration reduces reported capacity, the operating system may see less addressable space than the drive’s full selectable capacity. That can matter when investigating inaccessible sectors or planning a complete acquisition. Acquisition software may handle HPA and DCO differently, so an ordinary file copy or an assumption based only on the operating system’s visible capacity may not answer what is present on the device. The overview of Host Protected Area and related forensic concerns provides broader context; its historical software examples should not be treated as current tool-performance findings.

For evidence-preserving work, record the initial state and use a validated acquisition procedure. Avoid restoring or altering DCO before preservation unless the applicable forensic procedure specifically calls for it: a state-changing command can complicate later interpretation or recovery.
