Depending on its design, it can limit filesystem access, network connections, and access to host resources or credentials. It does not make the model trustworthy or guarantee that harmful actions are impossible: its protection depends on what the boundary allows, what data and secrets are placed inside it, and what remains reachable outside it.
What an AI agent sandbox is
A sandbox is an execution boundary, not a special property of an AI model. It is enforced by the surrounding runtime and its configuration: operating-system restrictions, containers or virtual machines, filesystem mounts, network rules, credentials, and permissions.

For example, the OpenAI Agents SDK describes a sandbox as an isolated Unix-like environment that may provide a filesystem, shell, installed packages, mounted data, exposed ports, snapshots, and controlled external access. In that architecture, the harness manages tasks such as the agent loop, routing, approvals, tracing, and run state, while a separate compute environment is where model-directed work runs commands or changes files. Not every product places orchestration and execution inside the same boundary.

Host files and other resources
Filesystem rules can restrict which paths an agent or its subprocesses may read or modify. Anthropic describes a Claude Code configuration that allows work in the designated directory while blocking modification outside it, using operating-system-level controls. The actual result depends on the configured paths and what is mounted or shared: a workspace explicitly passed into a sandbox is available to the work running there.

Network destinations
Network controls can limit where an agent can connect. In Anthropic’s described Claude Code setup, only configured domains are reachable, and a request to add a new domain can prompt the user for confirmation. Such restrictions can reduce the routes available for sending data out or contacting external services; they do not by themselves make every permitted connection safe.
Separation between execution and orchestration
A system may run agent-directed code in a separate compute environment while managing approvals, tracing, or task routing elsewhere. That separation can help define what the code can reach, but it is the concrete boundary and permissions—not the label “sandbox”—that determine the protection.
What it does not guarantee
Secrets inside the environment may be readable
OpenAI’s API security guidance warns: “Agent-generated code can access the files, credentials, and network available to its environment.” A key injected directly into the runtime is therefore available to code running there if that code can read it. Keep application credentials outside the execution environment when possible; for third-party access, a trusted proxy can broker scoped credentials. If exposure is suspected, revoke or rotate the affected credential.

Allowed network access can still change things
An allowlist generally controls which hosts can be reached, not which operations are allowed on each host. A permitted service might accept uploads, API writes, package publication, or other state-changing requests. Repository files, web pages, and tool output can also influence what an agent attempts. Network restrictions reduce some routes, but they do not make allowed destinations read-only.
It does not prevent prompt injection or guarantee safe intent
Untrusted content can try to steer an agent into using tools, credentials, files, or network access that are available to it. Sandboxing can constrain some resulting actions, but it cannot make an unsafe instruction harmless if the relevant resource or operation is permitted. Mounted data, exposed secrets, allowed network destinations, and tools outside the execution boundary remain important parts of the risk.
It does not replace approvals or audit records
Approvals and logs serve different purposes from the technical boundary. OpenAI describes sandboxing as setting limits on execution, while approval policies determine when actions crossing a boundary require review. Logs can help reconstruct actions and context. Review controls can catch or document risky activity, but they are not substitutes for filesystem, network, and credential restrictions.

Self-hosting leaves important duties with the operator
Anthropic’s self-hosted sandbox security model assigns the operator responsibility for hardening the runtime image, controlling network egress, isolating tools within the sandbox, and handling environmental data retention. A sandboxed deployment is not automatically secure simply because it runs in an operator-managed environment.

Sandbox designs are not interchangeable
The word “sandbox” can describe substantially different boundaries. Anthropic’s example uses operating-system-level filesystem and network restrictions for Claude Code. Docker describes Docker Sandboxes as running each local sandbox in a microVM with its own Linux kernel, and identifies five layers: hypervisor, network, Docker Engine, workspace, and credential proxy. Docker’s five-layer description applies to its design, not to sandboxes generally. A conventional container and a microVM are not the same isolation model.
Anthropic’s engineering article, published October 20, 2025, notes: “It is worth noting that effective sandboxing requires both filesystem and network isolation.” That is a statement about Anthropic’s engineering approach, not a universal certification or guarantee that every implementation has equivalent controls.

How to evaluate an agent sandbox
Before letting an agent run commands, inspect the boundary across these areas:
- Execution boundary: Is work restricted by operating-system controls, a container, a VM, or a microVM? Does it share the host kernel, and which host resources remain reachable?
- Filesystem scope: Which paths can the agent read or write? Are host directories mounted? Do symlinks, shared workspaces, or persistent state cross the boundary?
- Network egress: Is outbound access disabled, unrestricted, or allowlisted? Is policy enforced through a proxy? What happens to DNS and non-TCP traffic, and can permitted services accept writes?
- Credentials: Which keys are present in the environment? Are they scoped? Can a trusted proxy broker access, and can exposed credentials be revoked promptly?
- Tenant and workload isolation: Do users, sessions, or untrusted jobs share filesystems, environments, or credentials?
- Oversight and evidence: Which actions require approval, and what records capture tool activity, approvals, results, and policy decisions?
Check the effective configuration rather than relying on a product’s use of the term “sandbox.” In particular, confirm the mounted paths, available credentials, network policy, and tools the agent can invoke.
Does sandboxing make an AI agent safe?
No single sandbox configuration guarantees safety. A well-configured boundary can limit the files, services, and host resources an agent can reach, reducing the impact of some mistakes or manipulated instructions. Its value depends on both the isolation mechanism and the permissions granted inside it. Treat sandboxing as one layer of control, alongside careful secret placement, restricted network access, approvals for consequential actions, and records that support review.
