An “agentic AI model” usually means an AI system that uses a model to pursue a goal through planning, tool use, and multiple steps, adjusting its actions based on context or feedback. More precisely, agency describes how the surrounding system is designed and behaves—not a special class of standalone model. The model may generate or reason; software, tools, permissions, and an action loop let the system do more than return text.
What does agentic AI mean?
An agentic AI system receives or infers a goal, gathers relevant context, chooses an action, and evaluates what happens next. It may retrieve information, call an API, use software, or interact with a digital or physical environment. Depending on its design, it can use feedback to continue, revise its plan, or stop.

There is no single universally accepted technical definition. For example, NIST describes agentic AI as systems that function as autonomous agents, while AWS describes an agent as an autonomous software system using a large language model as a reasoning engine to perceive context, plan, execute, and adapt toward a goal. AWS also uses “agentic AI system” for arrangements that can include multiple collaborating agents and conventional software components. These are overlapping descriptions, not a universal standard.
So the phrase “agentic AI model” is convenient shorthand, but it can blur an important distinction: the model is one component; the agentic behavior comes from the system built around it.

How does an agentic AI system work?
A useful way to understand the process is as a loop rather than a single answer. Google for Developers describes the loop as observing, reasoning, acting, and using feedback.
- Observe: Gather the user’s request and relevant information about the current state.
- Reason: Interpret the context and choose a next step toward the goal.
- Act: Respond, retrieve information, call a tool, or make an authorized change.
- Use feedback: Check the result, then continue, revise the plan, or stop.
A system may have only a few of these capabilities, or it may repeat the loop across a longer task. The model’s output alone does not make a process agentic: the surrounding software determines what actions are available, how results are checked, and when the process ends. See the Google for Developers Machine Learning Glossary for its definition of an agent as software that can reason about user inputs to plan and execute actions on the user’s behalf.

How is an agentic system different from a chatbot?
A conventional chatbot may answer a question or draft text in one turn. An agentic workflow can continue toward an objective by choosing a next action, using a tool, examining the result, and deciding whether another step is needed. The distinction is not simply that one system can reason or produce a tool call; it is whether the system is set up to pursue a goal through a controlled action process.
For example, a chatbot might draft a reply to a meeting invitation. An agentic workflow might inspect a calendar, suggest a suitable time, and, if it has permission, create the event. This is an illustration of the difference, not a claim about a particular product. Whether the workflow can actually make the change depends on its connected tools and permissions.
How much agency can a system have?
“Agentic” is better understood as a spectrum than a yes-or-no label. The OECD’s 2026 survey of definitions discusses differences in goal and environment complexity, independent planning and adaptation, and direct action. NIST also treats autonomy—the initiative or discretion exercised without user intervention—as one relevant dimension.
- Goal scope and duration: Is the system handling one fixed task or a longer sequence toward a broader goal?
- Planning: Does it follow fixed steps, or can it revise its plan as circumstances change?
- Tool and environment access: Can it only retrieve information, make constrained changes, or act broadly?
- Autonomy: How often does it decide what to do without asking a person?
- Feedback and recovery: Does it check results and respond to errors by retrying, changing course, or stopping?
- Human control: Does a person receive notice, review actions, or approve them before they happen?
A bounded system with narrow permissions and a predictable task has less latitude than one pursuing a longer-term goal in an open-ended environment. These characteristics are more informative than the “agent” label on its own. NIST’s discussion of agentic AI systems highlights factors such as what an action enables, access and write permissions, risk and reversibility, reliability, monitoring, and autonomy.

Calling a system agentic does not establish that it is reliable, safe, self-improving, or fully autonomous. The label alone does not reveal which tools it can access, whether it can read or write, which actions require approval, or how it handles mistakes. Some systems use feedback to adjust their next step within a task; that is not evidence that they continuously learn or improve their underlying model.

How to evaluate a claim that a product is agentic
Ask what the system actually does rather than relying on its marketing label. A meaningful description should tell you:
- What goal it is meant to pursue and how long the task can run.
- Which tools and data it can access, and whether that access is read-only or can change something.
- Which decisions it makes independently and which require user input.
- How it checks results, handles failures, and knows when to stop.
- Which actions are reversible and what human approval or monitoring applies.
These details distinguish a tool-enabled workflow with tightly bounded actions from a system given broader discretion. They also make it possible to assess the practical risks without assuming that “agentic” means capable or trustworthy.
