Amazon Web Services (AWS) is Amazon’s cloud computing platform: a collection of online services for computing, storage, databases, networking, analytics, security, and more. Instead of buying and maintaining all the hardware yourself, you select and configure cloud resources that AWS runs in its data centers. Most services use pay-as-you-go pricing, but the bill depends on what you provision and how you use it.
What is AWS in simple terms?
AWS is a platform, not a single application. It provides building blocks that people and organizations can use to run websites, store files, host databases, analyze data, and support other technology workloads. AWS’s overview describes a portfolio of more than 200 services; that count can change as the platform evolves. AWS says it began offering IT infrastructure services in 2006. AWS overview

For example, Amazon EC2 provides virtual computing capacity, while Amazon S3 provides object storage. A customer can combine these and other services into an application, selecting the resources and settings the workload requires.

AWS operates the physical data centers, hardware, networking, and software behind its cloud services. A customer creates an AWS account, chooses services and locations, configures resources, and accesses them through AWS interfaces or APIs. Resources can be adjusted or stopped as needs change, although each service has its own behavior and billing rules. AWS describes cloud computing as “the on-demand delivery of IT resources over the Internet with pay-as-you-go pricing.” AWS Cloud Essentials

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Regions and Availability Zones
AWS divides its global infrastructure into geographic Regions, each containing Availability Zones. Some services also use edge locations for functions such as content delivery. As listed on AWS’s Global Infrastructure page on October 7, 2026, AWS had 39 Geographic Regions and 124 Availability Zones; the live count can change, and service availability differs by location. What are the main AWS products and services?
AWS groups its offerings across areas such as compute, storage, databases, analytics, networking, developer and management tools, security, mobile, Internet of Things, and enterprise applications. These are categories rather than a single bundled product: customers choose particular services for their requirements.

- Databases, networking, analytics, and security: AWS offers separate services in these and other categories, with capabilities and availability that vary by service and Region.
Check the relevant AWS service page for current features and regional availability before designing around a specific service.
How much does AWS cost? Is it pay as you go?
Most AWS services charge according to the resources used and the time they are used. AWS also describes flat-rate plans, tiered pricing, and commitment discounts for eligible services. The exact pricing model is service-specific, so “pay as you go” does not mean every workload has a low, fixed, or automatically predictable bill. AWS Product and Service Pricing

To estimate a workload, enter its assumptions in the AWS Pricing Calculator. Include the intended Region, compute or storage choices, hours of use, data transfer, redundancy, and any commitment terms. An estimate is only as useful as those inputs; compare it with the architecture and operating costs you expect, then monitor actual usage.
What are the advantages of AWS?
- Fast provisioning: You can access cloud resources without first buying and installing physical infrastructure.
- Flexible capacity: Resources can be adjusted as workload needs change, rather than committing every requirement to a hardware purchase in advance.
- Broad service choice and geographic reach: The platform spans many technology categories and operates Regions and Availability Zones around the world.
- Potentially lower upfront infrastructure spending: Using provider infrastructure may replace some capital expense with operating expense. It does not guarantee lower total cost; consumption, architecture, and pricing choices matter.
AWS presents provisioning speed, flexibility, and broad access to services as cloud benefits. Whether they produce a practical advantage depends on the workload and how it is designed. AWS overview

What are the disadvantages and trade-offs?
- Usage-based costs require attention: Charges vary with service usage and can be affected by data transfer, storage tiers, and other service details. Poorly understood usage can make a bill difficult to predict.
- Customers still handle important security work: Moving to AWS does not transfer responsibility for every application, permission, or configuration.
- Less direct control over physical infrastructure: AWS customers use provider-managed hardware. Organizations running their own data centers own and maintain that hardware, giving them more direct control along with the associated operational responsibilities.
- Location and architecture choices matter: Availability, latency, cost, and data-location requirements vary by service and Region. A global footprint does not remove the need to design for the workload.
AWS’s comparison of cloud and on-premises infrastructure highlights ownership and configuration control as key distinctions. AWS: cloud versus on-premises
Who is responsible for security on AWS?
AWS uses a Shared Responsibility Model: AWS is responsible for security “of” the cloud, while customers are responsible for security “in” the cloud. AWS protects the infrastructure that runs its services; customers remain responsible for workload-specific decisions such as data, applications, permissions, and configurations. The division varies with the service used. AWS Shared Responsibility Model

For Amazon EC2, an infrastructure service, the customer manages the guest operating system and its patches, installed application software, and security group configuration. Do not assume that the same customer responsibilities apply identically to every managed AWS service.
Should you choose AWS, on-premises infrastructure, or another cloud?
Compare the options against the workload rather than assuming one is always cheaper or better. Consider:
- Cost at expected use: Estimate the services and capacity you will actually need, including data transfer and redundancy.
- Operational responsibility and skills: Determine who will configure, operate, secure, and monitor the workload.
- Control requirements: Decide how much direct control you need over hardware and configuration.
- Latency and location: Check whether the required services are available in suitable Regions and meet geographic or data-location needs.
- Resilience and security: Plan how the workload will handle failures and protect data and access.
AWS may suit workloads that benefit from quickly provisioned, adjustable provider-run infrastructure. On-premises infrastructure may fit needs for direct physical control, while another cloud provider may be a better match for a particular cost, capability, or organizational requirement. The sound comparison depends on the specific architecture and operating model.
