Amazon Blink is a family of smart security cameras and video doorbells managed in the Blink app—not one particular camera. Depending on the model, a device can offer live view, motion alerts, night vision, and two-way audio. Live view and motion notifications are available without a paid plan; cloud video storage and some additional features require an eligible plan.

What is Blink?

Blink products are designed for app-based monitoring of indoor and outdoor spaces. The range includes indoor and outdoor cameras, Mini cameras, video doorbells, and floodlight cameras, and capabilities vary by model. Blink says its cameras can monitor areas inside or outside a property up to 20 feet; that is manufacturer guidance, not an independent performance measurement. Blink also cautions that battery-powered cameras are not designed to provide continuous CCTV feeds or to serve as baby monitors. Blink’s camera guidance explains the intended use and feature differences.

How does a Blink system work?

In Blink terminology, a system is one or more cameras linked so they can be armed or disarmed together. Blink says a system can include up to ten cameras and one Sync Module, and a single account can manage multiple systems. The required hardware depends on the camera: battery-powered cameras require a Sync Module, while wired floodlight cameras, Mini cameras, video doorbells, and Sync Modules can create their own systems. Check the exact model’s requirements before buying accessories. Blink’s FAQ lists system and device requirements.

What do you need to set up Blink?

Blink’s support FAQ lists an account, a valid email address, the current Blink app, a supported phone or tablet, and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with at least 2 Mbps per device as setup requirements. Its listed minimum operating systems are iOS 15, Android 9, or Fire OS 7, depending on the device. These are vendor-stated minimums and can change; check current compatibility before setup. Confirm that Wi-Fi reaches the camera’s intended location, since an internet connection that works elsewhere in the home may not be reliable at the installation spot.

Do Blink cameras need a subscription?

No paid plan is required for basic live view or motion-activated notifications, according to Blink. A subscription can add cloud clip storage, live-view recording, smart detection, or AI features, but availability depends on the camera, plan, and country. Blink’s current support information describes cloud clip storage of up to 60 days in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand, and up to 30 days in other regions. These are stated maximum retention periods, not a guarantee that every clip remains available for that full period.

Blink lists certain AI features in the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom, with an Illinois exclusion. Because feature eligibility, regional terms, and plan names can change, check the current subscriptions FAQ and plan feature details for the specific camera and country. Blink/Amazon account linking is generally voluntary, but Blink says it is required to activate plans purchased on Amazon and to receive eligible subscriber hardware discounts. A trial should not be treated as an ongoing discount. Blink’s account-linking instructions describe when linking is required.

Can Blink save video locally?

For eligible devices, Sync Module 2 can save motion clips to a compatible USB drive. This is local storage and is separate from cloud storage; check that the chosen camera supports the feature and confirm USB compatibility. For customers with a plan or trial, Clip Backup can copy cloud clips to USB once every 24 hours. This backup process is not the same as continuously recording video to the drive. Blink’s support pages explain the Sync Module 2 USB storage options.

Does Blink work with Alexa?

Selected compatible Echo, Fire TV, and Fire Tablet devices can show Blink live views. Blink also documents Alexa voice controls for arming and disarming, motion announcements, doorbell-press announcements, and routines. Compatibility and setup vary by device and feature; voice disarming requires an Alexa Voice Code. See Blink’s Alexa supported features and arming and disarming setup before relying on a particular command or announcement.
