AI deep research is a multi-step way of using AI to investigate a question: a system plans the work, gathers information from sources it can access, reasons across that material, and produces a structured answer, often with citations. It is a general description of a workflow, not the name of one model or a standardized technical category. Some companies also use “Deep Research” as the branded name of a particular feature.
How AI deep research works
A deep-research system typically combines a language model with search or other information sources and a process for planning and revising the task. A useful way to understand the workflow is to follow the work from question to report:

- Define the outcome. The user states what they need to learn, compare, or decide. A precise question helps the system focus its research.
- Plan the investigation. The system may break the task into smaller questions, identify evidence it needs, and decide what to search for. Planning and the amount of user control vary by product.
- Gather material. It searches or accesses permitted sources, which might include the public web, uploaded files, or connected services. Available sources depend on the specific product and account.
- Read and reason across sources. The system extracts relevant information, compares findings, and may search again or adjust its approach when it encounters gaps or conflicting material.
- Synthesize a report. It organizes findings into a response that may include citations or links so the reader can inspect the underlying material.
These are common elements, not requirements for every tool. OpenAI describes its ChatGPT feature as planning and carrying out multi-step browsing and reasoning, including adapting during a task. Google describes its Gemini API Deep Research agent as an autonomous loop of planning, searching, reading, and reasoning. Those descriptions refer to specific implementations, not an industry-wide specification.
What sources can it use?
Source access is product-, account-, and permission-specific. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Help Center says Deep Research can access the public web and uploaded files by default; connected apps and data services may also be available depending on factors such as plan, region, workspace settings, user role, app capability, and permissions. Google’s Gemini Apps Help says Google Search is included by default in Gemini Apps Deep Research, with other sources such as connected Gmail or Drive, uploaded files, and NotebookLM notebooks available subject to product conditions.
#1 Best Overall
Do not assume that a consumer app and a developer API have identical access or terms. For example, Google’s API documentation describes a developer-facing agent and pay-as-you-go pricing based on the underlying models and tools. That is distinct from eligibility, limits, and access in the Gemini consumer app.
How it differs from search and a quick chatbot answer
| Approach | What it mainly does | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary search | Finds or ranks material for a person to inspect. | When you want to locate pages or answer a focused question yourself. |
| Quick chatbot answer | Responds directly, often without a visible multi-step investigation or documented report. | When the question is straightforward and a brief answer is enough. |
| AI deep research | Uses search or other sources as part of a broader process of planning, gathering, reasoning, and synthesizing. | When the task is complex or source-heavy and a structured, inspectable report is useful. |
This is a practical distinction, not a formal taxonomy. The boundaries can blur: a chatbot may browse, while a research agent may perform only a limited investigation for a particular task.
What “deep research” does not guarantee
- A citation is a lead to evidence, not proof. A link can help you inspect a source, but it does not establish that the source supports the exact claim, that the claim is accurate, or that important contrary evidence was found.
- More steps do not guarantee a better answer. A system can still overlook relevant material, misread a source, or draw an unsupported conclusion. Judge the report by its evidence and reasoning, not by how long the process appears to take.
- It is not a substitute for accountable human judgment. People still need to frame the question, evaluate source credibility and relevance, verify important claims, and own consequential decisions.
- It is not the same as “AI for Science.” AI deep research is commonly used for broad AI-assisted information work. “AI for Science” more specifically concerns applying AI to scientific research. The distinction is useful, but terminology is not settled.
How to assess a deep-research report
Start with the claims that matter most to your task. Open the cited sources and check whether they support those claims in context; look for missing qualifications, dates, or counterevidence. Then consider whether the report used suitable sources and answered the question you actually asked. For work involving private or organizational information, also check which sources are connected, what permissions were granted, and which provider or workspace rules apply.

When comparing services, assess source coverage and permissions, citation traceability, the ability to steer or revise the investigation, the usefulness of the final report for your task, privacy and data handling, and current availability, limits, and cost. No single service can be assumed best across all subjects or research needs.

What accuracy evidence is available?
There is no established independent, apples-to-apples accuracy figure for the entire category of AI deep-research systems. One historical, vendor-reported result should not be treated as such: OpenAI reported 26.6% accuracy on Humanity’s Last Exam for the model powering its Deep Research feature, with browsing and Python tools. That result is specific to the named benchmark and configuration; it is not a general accuracy rate, a guarantee for a user’s task, or a category-wide comparison.
A 2025 survey of deep-research agents identifies accuracy, privacy, intellectual property, and accessibility as challenges for the field. OpenAI’s system card describes additional human probing and automated testing for selected risks before the company broadened its own product release. That documents one provider’s safety process; it does not establish that every research agent is safe or accurate.

Is AI deep research a standard technical term?
No single industry definition is established. A 2026 academic preprint proposes a broad definition centered on LLM-based systems using tools to interact with the external environment, with feedback and varying levels of automation, to help people discover and solve problems. That is one researcher’s proposed framing, not an adopted standard. In ordinary use, the term is best understood as a family of research workflows, alongside its use as branding for particular commercial features.
